Top Amazon Reviews

🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The Sauder cabinets received positive reviews for their easy assembly, clear instructions, and aesthetic appeal, with users appreciating the brushed-chrome finish of the handles and the heavy-duty hinges. However, concerns were raised about the thinness of the particleboard used in their construction and the potential lack of durability as a result. Most reviewers found them suitable for light to medium storage needs but cautioned against using them for heavy items.

Pros

  • 👍 Easy to assemble with clear instructions
  • 👌 Aesthetically pleasing with custom-looking molding trim
  • 👏 Lightweight, easy to handle and move
  • 🔝 Good for light to medium storage needs

Cons

  • 😕 Made of rather thin particle board
  • 👎 Not suitable for heavy storage
  • 😮 Some parts may seem flimsy or sag under weight
  • ⚠️ Safety strap required to prevent tipping

Should I Buy It?

If you're in the market for a lightweight storage solution that is easy to assemble and has a nice aesthetic, the Sauder cabinet is a good choice. However be aware that its construction is not suitable for heavy-duty storage and requires careful handling.

  • Good Shelf, but Keep The Manual!
Color: Soft White
I ordered 8 of these cabinets for my basement. 50% or 4 of them arrived with damage to the left door. This seems to be very common. Some were punctured, some were snapped in half, and the others had massive scars on the door. Thankfully this company has a good replacement part policy. I was able to go on their website, go to "service" and then "order replacement parts" and fill out the form and get new doors for all of them. The links to their website can be found on their amazon store in the help section or you can just google Sauder. Keep the manual though, it's required for the replacement to be processed because they want the model and lot number from the manual. The pic I've included shows the line of 5 cabinets plus 1 damaged one in the middle that's still awaiting the replacement left door. Once the shelfs are built they are light weight not durable, but look good and are very functional. The side panels are all very light weight and feel like they are made out of super thick cardboard, or super thin composite board. Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase. I better be, I spent about $2,000 on all of these lol. Only 1 of the 8 was wobbly and I put it between two of the other cabinets which hides the wobble. I got so good at building these I can now build one in 1 hour 20 min flat without the instruction manual. Super easy steps to follow. The only step that is a gotcha is on page 9 step 5. When you put the center together make sure you screw in the two S82 screws into Q/X. The instructions aren't well marked there so that tripped me up twice and I ended up with extra screws. This shelf comes with no spare parts so if you have extras, go back to the manual and figure out what you missed. The doors are super easy to adjust and it's makes it easy to put these side by side and make them all match. I had zero issues with the structure of the shelfs, the holding capacity, the build, or the look. They all turned out great and match the well side by side. Anyways Godspeed, and I hope you enjoy the shelves as much as I did. If you want a good looking, functional storage shelf, I'd recommend this one. ... show more

  • Great looking, sturdy storage cabinet that fits perfectly
Color: Silver Sycamore
I purchased this 71-inch Sauder storage cabinet to help clear out some clutter, and it has turned out to be the perfect solution for my needs. Right now, I am using it to store a mix of miscellaneous electronics, board games, and dog toys. It holds a surprising amount of gear while keeping everything completely organized and out of sight behind the closed doors. Putting it together was a breeze. I handled the entire assembly process by myself from start to finish without running into any issues or alignment problems. For the price point, the build quality is impressive, and it looks great in the room. The color and finish look fantastic, and the overall dimensions let it slide perfectly into the specific corner I had picked out for it. Once it was completely loaded up, the cabinet felt quite sturdy and stable. With a tall unit like this, I definitely recommend utilizing the included safety strap to anchor it securely to the wall for extra peace of mind. Overall, this is a high-quality, budget-friendly piece of furniture that functions exactly as advertised. I would highly recommend it to anyone needing to add some versatile storage to their home. ... show more

  • NOT HEAVY DUTY like most Sauder, but it was what I needed
Color: Soft White
First, here’s what I like about these cabinets: They’re super easy to assemble. Well, that is compared to some products like this that I’ve assembled. The parts were clearly labeled, and the instructions were complete and easy to understand (and in English). No boo-boos on the first one – I ordered two of them – and the second one went together even more quickly. They look nice. The molding trim on the doors gives them more of a custom look than your average white, assembled, particle board cabinet. The handles are a brushed-chrome finish and the hinges are heavy duty as well. It was well packaged. Both boxes arrived undamaged and the contents were in perfect condition. Now, their shortcomings: Every piece of Sauder Furniture I’ve ever assembled (and that’s a bunch of ‘em) has been made of ¾ inch particle board. This one is NOT, it’s much thinner! It’s more like 3/8 inch. Really. Some pieces bend when you push on them. That is both good and bad. It makes the cabinet not so heavy to handle and assemble (two people can easily lift it, or maybe one strong person). But it’s NOT HEAVY DUTY. That’s clearly stated in the description, if you read it carefully. They say the weight limit for the upper shelves in 25 lbs and the bottom shelf 50 lbs. I would not, under any circumstances, put that much weight on every shelf because I'd be afraid of sagging. Maybe half that, but then I’m careful. I knew this and I need it for storing lightweight items, so it suited my purposes. But don’t go thinking that you’re going to stock this baby with gallons of paint. Please. So, for me it worked fine. It has a strap you can screw the top to the wall with, and I recommend that you use it, because it could tip over. I will keep you updated if it fails to hold up in the long run. As a Prime member, I buy a LOT of stuff from amazon. Living out in a rural area far from a city, amazon is my go-to source for many of my purchases. I must rely heavily on your product reviews to help me decide which item is best for me -- especially when I can't actually see, touch or hold the product. I take my personal product reviews seriously, and if something proves to be a piece of junk, I'll tell you - and if it's great or mediocre, I'll tell you that, too. My policy is to try to write the kind of reviews I want to read and to update my reviews if for some reason the product fails to perform as advertised during the period it's warrantied for. I do ask that if you found this review helpful in making your decision, that you please click on the "yes" button below. ... show more

  • Great cabinet for a reasonable price. Would recommend.
Color: Soft White
Bought this for a kitty foster room. Love it. It was very easy to assemble by myself (a petite senior female) but the doors are a little tricky to adjust if you’re not accustomed to adjusting hinges. The instructions say to put the hinges on the doors and then attach them to the upright cabinet. I found it easier to put the hinges on the cabinet and then attach the doors. The magnets are super strong but can be easily adjusted. This is my second cabinet side by side. Not superior quality but a great cabinet for the price. I’m very pleased. I do have to include that the second one arrived significantly damaged by the shipping company. But it was picked up, refunded and replaced within 2 days. (Doors aren’t quite perfect in this photo but they work fine.) ... show more

  • Easy to Assemble, Sturdy for the Price, Invest in a Ratcheting Screwdriver
Color: Cinnamon Cherry
I read the reviews before purchasing and was felt like I was pleasantly surprised once I got everything out of the box. The box itself was super well packed and even had thick cardboard attached/glued to each edge for extra support. There were no dents or holes in the packaging whatsoever. Everything is labeled for easy assembly, screws, pieces, brackets, ect. The cabinet sides and doors are a little thin, however, if you're not kicking the thing, it won't be a problem. There are two magnets that hold the doors shut, and honestly, they're a little strong for the weight of the doors, so I may set them a little further back to accommodate, as they make the doors more difficult to open. I was able to assemble the entire thing by myself, but would have appreciated a second pair of hands to mount the doors. I started with the center hinge and used my foot to steady the while putting the other two hinges in place (on each door) and then tightened once they were all on. You can loosen the stopper on the back of each hinge and that helped with getting the doors to close without a huge gap at the bottom. I may adjust further, we'll see. This cabinet does hold quite a bit, and I'm still figuring out what goes where. I mainly purchased this cabinet for pantry space as my kitchen cabinets are not deep or high enough for cereal boxes and at 5'5" the cabinets themselves are too high for me comfortably reach anything placed in them. My kitchen does have a lot of storage space, just not as easily accessible as I'd like. This cabinet solves those issues. Now the less used items can live on those high shelves and my food can be easily grabbed without ten other things falling down. A couple of recommendations: Have patience with assembly and lay out all of your pieces beforehand. The instructions show what pieces go where, so I laid them out according to what I was working with and when. I have vinyl flooring so I used the box as a mat to assemble on (which worked surprisingly well), but I would say use the box or a carpeted area so you don't scratch the pieces (I did knock one part into another and made a tiny and barely noticeable dent, so try not to do that either). Make sure you have plenty of space, I only had my kitchen area to put this together and would have loved to have been able to not be right up against my stove and cupboards while screwing the sides onto the top/bottom. Also, get yourself a ratcheting screwdriver, it seriously saves your hand. ... show more

  • Not bad, but also not great
Color: Highland Oak
I ordered and received this last week. The product came well packaged and the directions were very clear and well laid out. I won't do a long drawn out review because I don't think it's necessary, but do want to point out a few things that I noticed during and after assembly. I first wanted to start out with a response to a few of the reviews that showed staples that were exposed. There's a very simple reason why the staples are exposed....you didn't install those panels correctly. If they're installed correctly cabinet parts hide the staples. I'll agree that the staples could have been done away with and a different solution employed, but the fact of the matter is if you're seeing staples after you've assembled the cabinet, you did it wrong. Anyhow, the cabinet isn't very sturdy. It racks a bit back and forth, and from corner to corner. While you can probably permanently attach it to a wall to mitigate this, you really shouldn't need to. The MDF they used is super thin so it's going to rock quite a bit. Because of this, you'll never get the doors to line up properly, especially if your floor is slightly uneven, like if you have tile. Obviously if you have children, you'll want to secure this to a wall to prevent them from pretending to be Spiderman and climbing on it, only for it to fall over onto them. I have to give the company credit for putting together a great, step by step manual/directions. Aside from the above negatives, the cabinet does look nice. I just wish they'd have used slightly thicker material. No matter how much I adjusted the hinges I just couldn't get the doors to line up perfectly. If I bent the cabinet in certain ways the doors would align, so this goes back to the fact that slightly thicker MDF should have been used. All in all I'm not overly disappointed. If the racking back and forth begins to bother me I can DIY this with some bracing, but for the intended use it's probably not worth the time, effort, or cost of wood and materials. Is it worth the money? I'd say absolutely just because if I were to build this cabinet out of plywoods and hardwoods, I'd be somewhere in the $300-400 range with all the hardware, materials, and that's not factoring in my own time. If you're looking for a simple storage solution that looks attractive, this is your solution. If you're looking for something bullet proof, you might want to keep looking. I can probably destroy this cabinet with my fists and not even hurt my fists. ... show more

  • we bought and put together (4) of these units - GREAT CABINETS
Color: Silver Sycamore
We bought three of these units originally, and then returned to buy one more. They look good and work well. Happily, the directions were clear and easy to read. The predrilled holes were all in the right places, and installation went very smoothly on all four units. They take a while to put together, and you really need a power screwdriver - yes, you technically could do with a manual screwdriver, but it is so much faster and easier with even a cheap power screwdriver. I am fully impressed with these cabinets. The shelves are adjustable, and it seems well made and should last a long time of regular use. We bought the grey color cabinets, and the color is just right. Thank you ... show more

  • Calling this junk is an insult to junk
Color: Cinnamon Cherry
I own several pieces of Sauder furniture that are sturdy and look nice for the price, so I ordered this for my home office...big mistake. This is NOT the same quality as most Sauder furniture. BOTTOM LINE: Aesthetically it is not nice-looking up close and in person...and functionally it is not at all sturdy nor adjustable (enough)...so it's basically an over-priced hunk of pressed wood/thin particleboard. I'm quite sure that if I listed it on Craigslist (to avoid having to haul it to the dump), I likely couldn't get twenty bucks for it since it is so flimsy it would fall apart when someone tried to move it. More details: 1) Not sturdy. You can push it and watch it sway. A minor earthquake (the kind you sleep through) will probably topple it. Don't expect to store books, canned goods, or anything even moderately heavy in it. The shelves will bow or break for sure, probably in less than a year. I doubt it will even withstand office supplies or blankets/linens long term. Maybe rolls of yarn, pillows, or stuffed animals. Pictures from other reviewers showing other items inside are almost certainly taken right after assembly and loading it up, not after six months or a year, which is when the problems from weight and daily use will occur. 2) No extra hardware is included, not even a single 1-cent nail, so you better hope it's all good...mine was not. One of the small screws was manufactured without the slots in the head for the screwdriver so obviously it was unusable...I had to make a trip to the hardware store to find a screw that size (unusually small). Time + money. 3) My back panel came with the pilot holes drilled on the wrong side. The holes should have been on the unfinished side because that side is supposed to face out (and go against a wall where you can't see it). The finished side is what you should see behind the shelves when you open the cabinet doors. Without the pilot holes to guide you, you could probably figure out how to nail around all the edges, but how to get the nails into the center panel?? Not happening without pilot holes. So I had to nail it on with the finished side out (grrrr) and now I see an unfinished piece of cardboard every time I open the doors. I see photos from another reviewer and although they didn't comment on this, their back panel was wrong, too...not as noticeable on a white cabinet, but still bad. 4) The back panel side edge is unfinished. It's only a few millimeters thick, but I find it annoying they couldn't coat it with the same dark brown color as the unit (or white for a white unit). From the side of the cabinet, you can see the thin edge of the back panel which looks like (and is) a piece of tan cardboard. Poor design. 5) The top is mostly finished, but not completely. The edges of a couple of pieces are unfinished so if you're putting it somewhere you can see the top, be warned. On the dark brown cabinet it's especially noticeable. 6) The design uses a ton of screws (plus small nails for the back panel) and not cam locks or any concealed hardware. So once assembled, you can see all of the dozens and dozens of screw heads. They are slightly recessed and to solve the problem of seeing them, Sauder gives you a sheet of round stickers to put over the screws. Dozens of little stickers that don't come off the sheet easily. Nor do they look nice once applied. This unit should not be put inside the house or in a living space--from an aesthetic standpoint it is really only suitable for a garage, attic, storage room, etc. 7) The shelves are adjustable but not to a large degree. Why they couldn't drill a few more holes to give more placement options is beyond me. As someone else pointed out, the center panel is fixed and prevents wide/large items from being stored. So ironically, some of the most suitable items to store, weight-wise, like blankets and pillows, will not fit inside. 8) Assembly: not the worst I've encountered and the directions are fairly clear. However, in today's age of assemble-it-yourself furniture there are way better designs out there that are easier to put together and yield a nicer looking product in the end. I highly recommend you keep shopping--you can do better. I will be calling on Monday to see what my options are, as this cabinet is worth no where near what I paid for it. I wouldn't give forty bucks for it. ... show more
