  • Great Value, reliable, dependable
Style: Cooling & Heating
This is actually my second purchase of the Whynter 12,000 BTU Portable AC/Heater, and for good reason—it’s one of the few portable units I’ve found that truly works year-round. Between the cooling, heating, dehumidifying, and fan functions, it keeps my space comfortable in all seasons. Setup is simple—the dual hose design makes it more efficient than single-hose units I’ve tried, and the included window kit is straightforward to install. The controls are intuitive, and switching between modes is seamless. It handles my 400 sq ft room without breaking a sweat (or making me break one). The only downside I’ve noticed is the wheels on the base. They make the unit easy to move around, but they’re not very sturdy. If you don’t handle the unit gently, the wheels can break, so I’d recommend moving it carefully or setting it in a spot where it won’t need to be rolled often. That said, the performance far outweighs that small flaw, which is why I bought another one. If you want a reliable portable AC/heater that’s versatile and powerful, this Whynter model is an excellent choice. ... show more

  • It's more than cost-free as time elapses in most cases.
Style: Cooling & Heating
I had an almost new small air conditioner that was noisy and wouldn't go inactive unless I turned it off. This appliance is bigger, works as a heater or a dehumidifier as well and when it is in the air conditioner mode, if it is a little cool outside, it goes on the fan mode when it gets to the adjusted temperature. If the temperature stays low with only the fan on, after a while even the fan turns itself off, till the inside temperature increases again, automatically turning itself on. I purchased this appliance a few years ago, and I have never noticed this feature, that is why I decided to write this review right after I have noticed it. I already knew that with the money that I have saved I could have bought at least two more of this unit. And it cools or heat the whole apartment, which is around 500 squares feet (it will take a little longer to reach the further areas). On the dehumidifier mode there will be water coming from the small hose. It needs some attention to determine how big the recipient that will collect the water will be for the planned time of use of the dehumidifier. I don't only recommend that you purchase this appliance, I ask you to do it if you don't have something as efficient as it is. That is a smart way to help to save the planet. ... show more

It works like a magic. Cooling and heating part are great. It really cools down. Quite enough so it doesn’t bother me at all. It’s as loud as a fan. Remote control is a plus. I gave it 4 star because of its size and tubes. It Really looks ugly with the tubes behind it and installing them on the windows. It’s easy to install. I wish they could make a smaller and stylish tubes. Other than that, cools like a winter and heats like a summer. ... show more

  • No longer recommend
Style: Cooling & Heating
My final edit on this. I did not see any cracks on the bottom, figured they'd be obvious. Again as I stated below, the heat worked great. The a/c was the problem. I had tried cleaning it. But found it was leaking by the cord. I realized that when it would just shut off. So the plus side, the emergency shut off triggered. I did contact customer service and they were responsive. Wanted me to ship it to them. Well, the box was destroyed. They showed me one at HD store that it would fit, but they weren't stocking it even though it said online they were in stock(at HD). I had no way to ship it. Very disappointed. Edit 4/15/2024-I've now used the a/c function. And it's leaking, badly now somewhere underneath. It wasn't too bad, I was planning on figuring out how to hook up a hose to it or something for a permanent drain. Then it got real bad suddenly. So I'll have to take it outside tomorrow and get a better look underneath it and see what I'm dealing with and if I need to call customer service or what. Not very happy. The heat worked good in all but our 0 degree temps for a week in winter. And the a/c has worked good till this, the few times I've used it, same with dehumidify mode. Going to be really disappointed if this is cracked like other's have shown. Will update again in a few days. So far I've only had the chance to use this in heat mode. And it does really good. My central heat and a/c went out a few years ago. That's a heat pump, so I have auxillary heat(which is barely working at this point) but that's very expensive to run. So this is to supplement that. I have a basic rectangle house, about 1200 sqft. I always keep the house on the cool side in winter, mid to upper 60's. So far this is holding to that pretty good combined with the main aux heat-which I actually barely run anymore with this unit. Problem though. It's been in use, not constant but pretty good for about 2 weeks, mainly in the evenings and overnight. Had the automatic drain hose running out the window. And, that has stopped working. So now, about every two hours it shuts off and I have to manually drain it at the bottom. FYI a pie tin fits almost perfect under for a quick drain if you need to do it manually. But, it's deep enough to hold all the water in there, need to dump it twice. No clue where all that moisture is coming from, it's winter and dry here. So I'll need to either take it apart and see if I can figure out what's up with the drain pump, or hook up the drain hose to the bottom, prop the whole thing up higher, and use a bin or bucket to drain it with gravity. Not too keen with having to do that. But I prefer using this to a space heater. I don't worry about the dogs or cats knocking this over, it just feels safer to use while I'm sleeping. And it really does heat up a good majority of my house really good. If I could leave my bedroom doors open, I have no doubt they would be a bit warmer than they are. Initial set up, it was a pain in the rear IMO. I've had several different brand of portable ac units over the years. They've been easy peasy to put together, 15 mins tops and just need a quick glance at the instructions. This? Took me about 45 mins with reading the instructions. Just overall a bit confusing. And I still haven't figured out how to put the cap on the intake side(that needs closed off for heat mode). So for now I have a filter covering it. The hose/tubes seem to be a better quality than other brands I've had, similar to one that was a higher quality brand. My main reason for getting this was the dual hose system. With the single hose, it draws in the hot air in the summer, and just they don't work good at all. Hope the dual hose works better as I've seen. I'll update after I get the chance to use the ac and dehumidify modes, or if any other problems arise. I managed to snag this on a sale, and got a couple of good discounts, so I got this at a much lower price out of pocket. But I'm not sure I would've bought it at it's current price. These things are just way too expensive for what they are and the problems that come with them. But they're so much more convenient (when they work) than a window ac unit. And this with the heat is just an added bonus. ... show more

  • Lowest negative pressure two hose I've owned
Style: Cooling & Heating
Heating and cooling works great. Other two hose units often have noticeable negative pressure because they are poorly sealed internally. This unit is very well sealed other than some small openings. Quietest unit I owned, easy to program, decent hose accessories, with no vibration noises as of yet. Vibrations are well isolated and don't transfer into the laminate flooring like my other units. Only drawback I notice currently is the condenser side ventilation. The exhaust fan isn't very strong (I suppose to reduce noise) so it doesn't push the exhaust far enough away from the intake using the stock bracket. Running at 24C internal temperature, 26C external temperature, the intake hose and exhaust hose is 39C and 42C respectively. My other Haier unit maintains 29C and 45C on the hoses. Separating the intake hose to another window 10ft away improved efficiency and performance noticably. Updated Jan 2020: Works great as above, except in the recent cold snap. The exhaust coils would freeze up and heat output is reduced dramatically. It appears this unit does not have a defrost cycle to maintain performance in cold weather. Doesn't affect my score as it does not advertise the unit to have this feature. ... show more

  • Truly elite portable air conditioner and extremely quiet!
Style: Cooling & Heating
Just got my unit. The cooling works awesome and cools my room really fast as it should being a dual hose unit that doesn't suck in room air for cooling the condenser, and I also tried the heat mode just to see if it works and that works great too blowing space heater-like hot air out the vent while the exhaust hose was ice cold. The noise levels were also far lower than I even expect it so although there's always a whooshing noise as long as the fans are on, the compressor itself is extremely smooth and quiet even when starting up and cutting off. I think that I can sleep through the noise quite easily so this unit is perfect for bedroom use unlike other noisier portable air conditioning units. Only complaint is that I wish the louver on the vent has an auto swing function to keep distributing the air instead of just a manual hand-opened vent. Otherwise, highly recommended product. EDIT: It's been almost a month since my first unit arrived now, and yes I got 2 units eventually since I'm so impressed by it. The compressor is definitely much quieter than other portable units and so much so that I can sleep comfortably without it waking me up at night, its definitely quieter than the condensing and evaporator fan which is extremely surprising. Also the units I have managed to heat my room to comfortable levels even when the outside is about 38F so far and my room is an extension so it has terrible insulation. When its hot out it has also kept my room cold with no problems. Appreciate the drain pump too as because of that it will auto drain the condensate when continuously run in heat mode so that I do not have to empty it myself, definitely want that feature on a heat pump. I'm extremely impressed by this PAC that I would go to say it's the be all end all of PAC units, I'm even more surprised that (currently) it's priced for only $349! If you're looking for a PAC that can cool and heat then this is it!. ... show more

  • It worked beautifully through the heatwave. It worked beautifully through the heatwave.
Style: Cooling & Heating
I am finally comfortable in my sun room. I was looking for a unit that also had heat. When trying to choose, I was checking brands and I have a Whytner ice cream compressor that is amazing so I went with this brand. So far it is working beautifully and I fell asleep in the comfort right away. The room I use it in is 250 square feet and has a poorly insulated roof plus 3 double sliding glass doors. I am happy! 7/18/25 It has been running almost non-stop from summer through winter and now summer again. Works perfectly. I taped the vent open due to my chubby cat who wants to sit on it. I clean the filter a couple of times a week due to it being in a room with a parrot. This is THE room I am in all the time. I am very impressed with the ease of function. It doesn't automatically switch from a/c to heat but that is easy with remote or push button. If the temps are extreme you recirculation the air in the room by blocking the intake to the outside. It will draw air in from the room. I would buy it again. ... show more

  • Good for Small Spaces Good for Small Spaces
Style: Cooling & Heating
I purchased the Whynter ARC-122DHP Air Conditioner last summer in response to a lot of heat waves (SoCal). The unit performed well during the time I used it, providing both cooling and heating through its heat pump, which is much more efficient than a space heater in the winter. I live in San Diego, with very expensive electricity rates and normally mild weather, so I got this unit to help with my bedroom when it got too hot or cold. Compared to my whole house AC, this unit is probably 3-4x cheaper to run since I’m cooling a smaller area, and it’s relatively efficient compared to single hose designs. The noise level has been good enough for me, not disrupting my activities, but I also sleep with ear plugs at night. I set up the unit with a sliding door using some third-party attachments and took care to insulate the exhaust hose while keeping it as straight and short as possible. I also made sure to seal crack as as best I could. This setup seemed to help maximize the unit’s performance. I also found it was a good idea to put the AC in a drain pan to catch condensation or any water from emptying the tank. Recently, I encountered an issue just outside the warranty period. When I reached out to customer service, I found them to be polite and helpful in helping me debug my issue, and when that failed, getting a replacement unit. Overall, my experience with both the product and the customer service has been positive. Getting solid customer service is a reason to go for a trusted brand like Whynter for an expensive purchase. ... show more
