Description

Remember when you brought those old jagged boards back to life? The WEN 12.5-Inch Benchtop Thickness Planer repurposes rough and worn wood for an exceptionally smooth finish. The powerful 15-amp motor provides up to 20,000 cuts per minute at a 26 feet per minute feed rate. Plane boards up to 12.5 inches wide and 6 inches thick with ease. The handy depth adjustment knob varies each pass to take off anywhere from 0 to 1/8 of an inch. The 2-inch dust port removes chips and sawdust from the workpiece while the onboard workpiece return rollers make multiple passes a breeze. This package also includes height-adjustable infeed and outfeed tables to limit snipe while providing extra support to your workpiece during planing. Measuring in at 55.6 pounds and 22 by 23.5 by 18.25 inches (with a 20 by 12.5-inch foot print), this unit can be easily moved around the shop using the onboard rubber-grip handles. If that’s not your style, the predrilled base holes let you easily mount the planer to the work surface or stand of your choice, such as the WEN MSA658T Rolling Planer Stand. And because it’s a WEN product, the WEN Thickness Planer comes backed by a friendly customer support line, a stocked inventory of replacement parts. Remember when your planer could handle even the hardest of woods? Remember WEN.

  • A great Planner for an awesome price
Style: Refurbished 13-Inch (discontinued)
This planner is just what I needed to complete my workshop. It just does not get any simpler or accurate than this. I've been working with wood for about a year now, so this review comes from someones who is just starting, a planner was on my wishlist but since I have limited space to work, my equipment is stored in a room and every time I'm going to use it, I need to carry it outside. So for starters I need it to be as light as possible and also as compact as possible. I had some planner in mind, including the DeWalt DW734 which is about $120 more expensive and also half and inch less capacity. It may sound like a small difference in capacity, but trust me that that half inch is a huge deal. I cannot be happier with this purchase, the day I got it home, it took me literally 3 minutes to start planning. I am fairly good following instructions but like I said before, I am a woodworking newbie. The results from planning that board on the pictures is a completely smooth surface, practically I don't even need to sand it, although I will cause I want it even smoother but really I could just leave it like that. Also I can confirm that the unit will plane a 13 inch board cause that is the exact size of this board. About the quality of construction, this seems like a very sturdy machine, no rattling or anything of the sort. I also own another WEN machine, a 6524 oscillating belt sander and that unit has not given me any issues after a year from purchase. So I am not worried about that. The way you measure the amount of material to cut is a very intuitive design. you slide the beginning of your board in the machine, the board will push a small button on the machine and that will give you the amount to be removed. You could remove up to 1/8" in a single pass, although I find that taking less material doing more passes is preferable. For me, 1/16" is the perfect amount. On top of the machine there is a crank that you turn to lower and raise the cutter, this crank is very sensitive, a 1/4 turn is what I do after every pass. The dust collection system works well, it is not perfect, there will be chips in your workshop, but overall it is more than adequate. Maybe if I used a more powerful vacuum, that could do the trick. the machine comes with an adaptor that will fit most vacuum hoses. I tested the level of the trays on both sides of the machine and right out of the box they were super squared, no need to fiddle with that. Finally we need to talk about Snipe, that is one issue that did had me worried. Some internet users were stating that the snipe was noticeable while others said it was almost non existent. I am happy to announce that for me that is not noticeable. As you can see from the pictures, there may be a small amount of snipe since that is just the way these benchtop planner work, but for me it is barely noticeable sometimes only. Like I said, weight was one of the most important factors to determine which machine to get, and they don't get any lighter than this one, partly because this machine does not have the granite surface bellow the cutter where the wood slide, this one has a metal plate that it may get scratched more but the weight savings are well worth it. Overall very impressed and very satisfied with this purchase. ... show more

  • Works like a champ!
Style: 12.5-Inch 2-Blade Planer
This unit works very well so far. The only down fall is it’s not built strong enough for me.Meaning the overall construction and materials of this unit. That being said it’s worth the money for sure!

  • WEN for the win
I have recently gotten into wood working and decided that I needed to have a thickness planer in my shop. With tight funds and realistic expectations, I decided to purchase the WEN 6550 planer. I came to this decision after doing countless hours of research and watching pretty much every video out there comparing, using, and reviewing planers. While big yellow came out on top in most reviews and in forum discussions, I just couldn't justify spending that much money for a tool that will probably not get used that often. Especially when the WEN seems to get overwhelmingly good reviews. Now, to get to the review. My package arrived completely intact. I had visions of battered boxed with broken or missing contents. None of that happened. The box was completely intact and the planer was well cushioned inside. Setting up the planer was a simple matter of removing the styrofoam, attaching the handle, attaching the dust chute, wiping off the infeed, outfeed, and granite tables and waxing all of them down. The next thing I did was place the planer on a completely level surface and check the surfaces with a level. Everything was level in all directions and the cutter head needed no adjustments. The first piece of wood I ran through the planer was a scrap 2X4 that I know had a slight warp. Several passes through the planer gave me some nice square edges and most of the warp was planed out. I'm sure that if I had kept going I could remove the entire warp. Next I fed a piece of oak pallet wood through the planer that was warped and cracked. While the planer did nothing for the crack, it did remove every bit of nastiness and revealed a beautiful tiger pattern under all the rough wood. Now I just have to find the right project for this piece of wood. One thing I read a lot about with all planers is snipe. The WEN 6550 is not immune to this either. While not bad there is definitely snipe there. Running other pieces of wood through the planer with sacrificial wood before and after what you are planing completely eliminated all traces of snipe. In fact, the cutter head did such a good job on my project I almost don't even need to sand now. But Fred, how loud is this planer? I'm glad you asked. It's loud. Running it without hearing protection just means that you will become friends with an Audiologist sooner rather than later because you WILL need hearing aids. Ok, all kidding aside, yes, it is loud and yes, you should wear hearing protection. Without any wood running through the planer it's not really any louder than any other tool in your shop. In fact, my table saw is probably louder but, put some wood through the planer and you can tell a huge difference in the decibels. Wood removal is excellent but I have yet to turn the handle more than 1/2 a turn per pass (1/32nd inch wood removal) and mostly I'm only doing 1/4 turns (1/64th inch wood removal) with each pass. Each full turn will remove 1/16th inch of wood. So far, I've run pine, poplar, oak, walnut, maple, and purple heart through the planer and it has yet to even act like it's having trouble. Once I've use the planer some more and gotten used to it, I'll try doing a full 1/16th inch in a pass to see what happens. This is a two blade cutter head planer and the blades are reversible. One review that I read said that blade removal was harder on this planer compared to others. Now, I will admit that I have nothing to compare that statement too but, I did not find blade removal hard or complicated. Just remove the two screws from the dust hood, remove the two screws from the blade cover and bam, there are your blades. There is a cutter head lock and you do have to push it down to rotate the cutter head to get to the 2nd blade but, that's not hard or a big deal. Time will tell how well this planer will hold up but, based on it's performance so far, I see no reason why I won't get many years of service out of it. If you are in the market for a planer, you should definitely consider WEN. ... show more

  • So far, so good for me. This is a nice product, at a great low-end price.
Style: 12.5-Inch 2-Blade Planer
Good Planer so far, Ive had it about 2 months. I have run a lot of shorter stock through it, and I even have little to no snipe.

  • Great but needs stands for heavy boards!
Style: 12.5-Inch 2-Blade Planer + Blades, 2 Pack
This is a great plainer for me. It workws great for 12in wide 2in boards 46in long. Now when I do taller boards that a are heavy in weight I gets that waves at end of the plainer side. I got to get a roller stand for the longer boards to prevent this!

  • For the price, this is very functional benchtop thickness planer.
Style: 12.5-Inch 2-Blade Planer
I don't have much room in my garage for standing equipment, so I need benchtop equipment that is easy to move and store. So far, this thickness planer works well for me. But it does have a flaw that I can't adjust out - snipe! I get 2" of snipe on the infeed and 2" of snipe on the outfeed no matter how I adjust the feed tables. I solved this problem by simply hot gluing thin 1/4" sacrificial runners that extend 2.5" in front and behind the start and ending piece of whatever piece of wood that I am working - the runners take the snipe and my material runs through just fine. For the price of this machine, the added time to hot glue up some runners is not a problem for me - the finished thickness plane is perfect and true. ... show more
