Compact yet powerful, the WEN 8-Inch Slow-Speed Bench Grinder provides reliability even in the face of the most difficult tasks. • Works Perfect
Style: 2021 Model
It perfectly sharpens my wood lathe tools, axes, knives, scissors, and drill bits. It is well-built and quiet. It comes assembled except for a couple of things which are easy to attach. It has plenty of power and is big enough to do anything I want, yet small enough to fit in my small wood shop. Plenty of bang for your buck. ... show more

  • Inexpensive, capable and versatile.
Style: 2017 Model
Pros - Great price. This grinder came with Aluminum Oxide (white) wheels (60 and 120 grit), which are SO far superior to the gray silicon carbide wheels that comes on many grinders - it's really the most important upgrade that can be made to ANY grinder. Assembly was straightforward, using just the diagram. The magnifier lens built into the left (120 grit) protective eye-shield is a nice touch, and more useful than I originally thought it would be. The unit is quiet, ran smoothly (not much vibration), and once up to speed (more on that in a sec...) has plenty of power for sharpening chisels and smaller items. I haven't tried doing an axe or splitting wedge yet, but see no difficulty as long as brute force is not used... finesse is the preferred method here (and will also minimize temper-damaging heat). I trued the wheels with a Wolverine diamond-point jig, and the operation became even more quiet and smooth. Mounting to my grinder stand was, in my instance, complicated, since I use a Wolverine sharpening system for my lathe chisels, and mounting height/centering in relation to the Wolverine components are fairly critical. Otherwise, mounting is very simple and straightforward - two appropriately spaced bolts do the trick (hint - remove the rubber feet if mounting to a bench or stand). Cons - While the grinder motor is fine once up to speed, it does take several second to get there, at which time there is insufficient torque to do any work - in fact it's relatively easy to "stall" the grinder if it's not running at full speed. Also, it takes quite awhile to come to a stop once turned off (which is not really a problem). Once I trued the wheels with the Wolverine dresser it took even LONGER to come to a stop. Motor runs fairly warm after extended use, but not excessively so.I would suspect that in heavy production use, that might be problematic After set-up, about an hour's work and I had sharpened ALL of my lathe chisels (over a dozen) to a fine, even edge. Once I got the hang of how much pressure to apply, and with judicious "dipping" into the water tray, I experienced almost no heat discoloration to the tools (which are mostly HSS). I use a separate grinder with diamond and stropping leather wheels to put a final, mirror-like finish on my tools, but this grinder is sufficient for most applications as-is. I would recommend this grinder to anyone who is in need of an inexpensive grinder, capable of putting a good edge on hand tools such as chisels, lathe chisels, carving tools, etc. UPDATE: Bought a 2nd one and mounted wire wheels on it... One steel, the other brass. Doubly pleased with this grinder. ... show more

  • It does its job fine
Style: 2017 Model
I like that this grinder is bright orange, which makes it easier to find in my shop. But really, I like this grinder. I was looking for an affordable option in a low-speed grinder and despite some bad reviews, this grinder works great for me. Why a low-speed grinder you ask? Mostly because I am using it exclusively to sharpen lathe chisels that each cost more than this tool. Less speed means less damaging heat and less wear on those expensive Carter and Sons bowl gouges! Now, if I were a smarter man I would have anticipated the purchase of a CBN wheel nwhen looking for a grinder and considerd one of those grinder/CBN wheel packages which would be like buying two wheels and getting a free grinder. Live and learn! It is a great grinder though, Runs smooth and quiet and when I turn it off it takes a while to spin down which to me means well balanced and good bearings, Two things that will contribute to a long lasting tool. ... show more

  • Hard to beat for the price
Style: 2017 Model
I bought this 8-inch slow speed grinder for sharpening lathe tools only. I'll be using Wolverine jigs with it and not the factory tool rests so no comment on the included tool rests. Probably won't use the factory eye shields either since I wear a full face shield while turning at the lathe so really the only parts of this grinder I care about are the motor and wheels. Out of the box I did attach everything just to see how it all went together. The wheels came premounted. On first power up I noticed a slight vibration in the right hand coarse wheel and none in the left hand fine wheel. When I say slight I mean I could feel it in the table I set the grinder on but not really see it. The grinder was not vibrating enough to walk around on the table. Once I have it mounted where I'll be using it I think a light dressing on the coarse wheel should take care of that slight imbalance. This grinder runs very quiet. Much quieter than any of my 8-inch full speed grinders. ... show more

  • Still working perfectly after a year
Style: 2021 Model
I mounted CBN wheels on mine shortly after I got it. Together, they work great. Sharpening my lathe tools is fast and I get a great sharp smooth edge.

  • Great sharpener! Workhorse for woodturning gouges.
Style: 2021 Model
The media could not be loaded. Stable, minumim vibration that does not affect sharpening with CBN wheels. Never tried stock abrasive wheels, -some people complain about them- sorry no idea. Soft start, almost no vibration (see my video). Enough power for big 1" bowl gauge shaping with 80 grit CBN wheel. I was worried about vibration with CBN wheels because you cannot dress them, they have to run perfectly round. However, after shaping 1" bowl gauge, I can say the little vibration is unnoticable. You can hear it, but you cannot feel it through the wheels. I specifically went to my local Woodcrafters store and tried their Rikon sharpener, and it ran with the similar amount of vibration, very subtle. I can say Rikon runs the same, looks the same except for white color and logo, and costs $200. So I'm sticking with Wen. Great product! ... show more

  • Damaged, doesn't turn, returning
Style: 2021 Model
Damaged: The packing styrofoam is broken in multiple places, the left wheel cover is misaligned and the wheels don't spin when the unit is turned on, even giving it 20 seconds to warm up. Returning the grinder.
