Description

Written in a fresh, warm voice loaded with empathy, Welcoming Your Puppy from Planet Dog lights the path to a relaxed, happy interspecies household “I truly LOVE this book. If I were fostering, breeding, or getting a new puppy, I’d read it twice, and still keep it within reach every day.” — Dr. Patricia McConnell, applied animal behaviorist, speaker, and author of The Other End of the Leash and The Puppy Primer After a decade of guiding people who’ve just added a puppy to the family, dog trainer Kathy Callahan has learned a fundamental truth: at some point every one of them feels overwhelmed. When they seek out expertise, they’re flooded with impossibly detailed advice, conflicting opinions, and a surprising number of techniques that seem unkind. In contrast, Callahan reassures owners that success flows not from nailing an intimidating list of disciplinary tactics, but from adopting a mindset of “trusted guide” rather than “master.” The key to great training is recognizing that we have essentially kidnapped these puppies from their own vastly different culture. Using an easy-to-grasp “Planet Dog / Planet Human” concept, Callahan dives into the puppy essentials, including: • how to prepare your house (and yourself) for puppyhood • potty training, chewing, jumping, and other challenges • how to train with fun, not fear • why it might seem your puppy “just doesn’t listen” • navigating puppyhood with young kids, cats, and/or other dogs • what to do if there’s household disagreement on things like whether dogs belong on furniture In fun-to-read chapters filled with empathy for both the beleaguered humans and their confused puppies, Welcoming Your Puppy from Planet Dog paves the way for a rewarding friendship between a relaxed, well-prepared human and a canine family member who’s happily at ease in our world. • A wonderful read that will help set the stage for welcoming your new puppy home
This easy-to-read, funny, and insightful book is a true gift for anyone looking to better understand what they're getting into when bringing a new puppy home to be part of their family - so that they can better think through and prepare for how they'll go about raising Puppy from day one. Puppyhood is such an intense time, and this book will help shift your mindset toward empathy and understanding and away from frustration and a "what have we done?!" shriek in the middle of the night when your new baby cries out for what may seem like the millionth time. As a puppy trainer, serial puppy foster, and dog mom, I loved this book from start to finish. Kathy will open your eyes to so many truths about young puppies, and she helps illustrate how hard they work to understand their new homes, a language they don't yet understand, and 'rules' they can't possibly know. It's up to us to help them along in their journey as we all get to know one another and find common communications, and this book will guide you through the process. ... show more

  • Wonderful, essential resource for future and current dog owners!
This is a must-have for anyone considering adding a new puppy to their family. In fact, I'd argue this book is essential reading for puppy AND adult dog owners alike. Callahan's wisdom and phenomenal breadth of knowledge as a dog owner, foster and trainer is evident throughout. She not only provides specific advice and tips, but encourages us to shift our perspective and mindset as dog owners. Her encouragement to lead with empathy helps inform and improve the way we care for our beloved canine family members. The writing is clear, concise, and filled with humor and warmth. It has helped us be better dog owners. Highly recommend! ... show more

  • Best Common Sense Traing Book - WITH HUMOR
I am a trainer and have read many books on the subject. I like this one best. Using a warm (often funny) approach the author provides clear guides. Begin with an 'alien puppy' who knows nothing of our ways to a happy, confident master of this new world. I HIGHLY recommend this book!

  • A easy-to-read world of truths, helpful hints, and puppy love
This is probably the most easy-to-read training manual ever. Full of real-world, situational advice and tons of actually helpful tips, this book leaves no stone unturned in all things puppy training. The premise is simple: start with empathy. That theme runs throughout the book -- empathy for the puppy and yes, for the owner too! From the initial steps of considering getting a puppy to bringing it home, with very detailed information on setting up your home and getting through that first week, and beyond, Callahan uses her years of puppy training experience as well as science-based truths to guide readers on the rewarding path of positive reinforcement. Honestly, try this approach on your toddlers and teens! It's amazingly effective. 5 stars. ... show more

  • A breath of fresh air and fun!
I've been working with dogs professionally for 20 years and this book should be in the hands of every new puppy guardian even before they get their puppy. If you've raised puppies before you still need this book, because that was likely 12- 15 years ago and there is so much you don't remember about the challenges of raising a baby with sharp teeth that doesn't wear diapers! The book is written with humor and a deep love of dogs. It is chock full of sensible advice and easily implemented ideas that will make raising your puppy manageable and fun. If you ever wondered why puppies act the way they do and how to help them grow into wonderful adult dogs this is THE book to read. ... show more

  • Every puppy owner should be required to read this before getting the puppy!!!
I work with dogs and the value of this book for all puppy owners cannot be understated. While there are some pieces in here that are 100% puppy specific, the concepts and teachings about how to rethink how you think of working with a dog would be valuable for any dog owner. I now recommend this book to every person I know that is getting or just got a puppy! Game changer and amazingly informative and well written!!!! ... show more

  • A wonderful guide for new puppy owners!
An empathetic approach of understanding the perspective of the puppy. It exposes issues with puppies that I never considered before. It has changed my mind and the behavior of our dog has improved due to this understanding.

  • A Must Have Book For New Puppy Families!
You’ve fallen in love with the sweetest, cuddliest puppy, who slept in your arms the entire car ride home. The entire household loved on the puppy and found the playful nips and baby growls adorable. Quickly the novelty wears off as a couple accidents happen in the house and a treasured item gets a solid chewing. The playful nips are less fun. What happened to the sweet, quiet, cuddly puppy? Think back to the last time you got completely lost in an unfamiliar neighborhood or were abandoned overnight due to a missed flight at some far-flung airport. I bet you snarled and nipped too. Your puppy had a happy fun life back on planet dog with his mom and all his brothers and sisters. Life was calm and predictable. And despite your limitless love for your new pup, you have brought them to a completely new planet, filled with unfamiliar spaces, lots of humans, maybe a cat or two, all without his cozy family. You can be your puppy’s new cozy family, and this book will tell you how to do it. More than just a training guide, Kathy’s book helps you build a welcoming environment to fold your new puppy into your “pack.” It’s more than an instruction manual, it is filled with Kathy’s experience and charm and a zillion ways to train both the humans and the puppy, with empathy and love. Highly recommend! ... show more
