I bought this drive to supplement the storage capacity of my Xbox Series X for games that I play that are not Series X|S optimized. To that end it's been perfect. Western Digital put some serious thought into the D30 that make it perfectly suited for this role of second tier external storage. It's attractive negating the need to hide it away, it's built solidy to make it suitable in the role of free standing external storage including the fact that it clips securely into the included stand, and it's performance is decidedly top tier and current even if not quite as state of the art as Microsoft's velocity architecture and the proprietary Seagate expansion card or the internal M.2 options for the PS5 required for current gen games. The first night I had it I downloaded ~450gb worth of fresh installs in a continuous write operation that lasted around 2.5 hours and didn't have a single issue, with the enclosure of the drive never seeming to come much above ambient temperatures. Load times are impressive, obviously it's silent and overall performance is excellent. Bottom line, this is a quality external SSD purpose built to stand along side the current generation of consoles and in this application it's second to none. I now own 5 or 6 of these. They are all blazing fast with true 7200RPM speed, but as many have mentioned, they can be a little noisy and clicky at times. Some of mine have more fan noise and vibration than others. Likewise some are more clicky than others. It's a little annoying if the drive is on your desktop very close to you. I really wish they provided a longer USB cable so I could place the drives further away. I suppose you could buy a longer cable. That said, when they aren't actively reading/writing, etc, they are relatively quiet in sleep mode, which is most of the time. There's nothing better out there right now in terms of speed and 8TB of storage. ... show more

Three months impression for 2TB D30: Editing rating from 4-stars to 5-stars. Good buy for less than $100 per TB. Better than 1Gbps transfers between PS5 and D30. D30 remains cool-to-touch during lengthy transfers. OEM USB-C cable is trash. A certified 10-GBps cable from retailer with the initials “Bravo Bravo” resolves the connectivity issue. First week impressions for 2TB D30: Not the fastest SSD but reasonable given the 100-dollar-per-TB cost. The included USB-C to USB cable was faulty. PS5 console did not recognizes the D30 when linked to the PS5’s rear USB ports (per Sony instructions). Purchased a quality USB-C to USB certified 10GBps cable locally to resolve the connectivity issue. Saved the PS4 game files to the D30. The PS4 game saves and PS5 files/saves must stay on the console. (The D30 can save PS5 game files but they must be moved back to the console before playing…) Good build quality on the plastic outer case. D30 did not get hot during use (yet). Placed the D30 on a 5x5 heatsink block for insurance. ... show more

The storage capacity is not fully 500gb as expected you get access to only 465.8gb of storage after formatting the device upon initial plug in. But games that are not series X/S optimized can be played off the ssd without loss of performance or load times in comparison to the internal ssd of the xbox series s. Transfer speeds are also very good. Peaks at 2.5gbs and averages down to like 500mbps if transferring from the internal ssd to the external ssd. Overall impressed. Would not recommend buying the $220 seagate ssd that is a rip off lmao. Just keep X/S games on the internal and everything else on the external. ... show more

Bought this to use as a Time Machine backup for a Mac OSX computer. It works great, very fast, almost no heat. Its also about half the size of a normal 3.5" external case....
