I bought this HDD for my mother and she loves it. I've also used and tested it several times and I must say it performs great! Important to note my mother is not a gamer and is only using it for regular file unloads and computer backups. Since it won't be used for gaming my testing consisted of me moving several hundred gigs of files back and forth and streaming both music and movies directly off the drive while these transfers were simultaneously going on. I did not test its performance from a gamer's perspective but I did put it through my own gauntlet and it did remarkably well. Read and write speeds are true to specifications. The drive does stay significantly cooler than my other WD HDDs. I do highly recommend this product and I do plan to buy the 5TB variant for myself soon. PS I do buy separate cases for all my external HDDs you should carefully note the dimensions of this drive if you shop for a case because this drive is super thin and several milimeters wider than past WD products. Used it to store my games on with my laptop and desktop. 2TB is a good starting point for storage needs of most gamers. It holds nearly everything I have and makes transferring easier. The simple plug and play aspect of it means that I can keep my games on this and simply switch the USB connection back and forth between my desktop and my laptop. As far as speeds go, I've not noticed any issues or major differences between loading games from local drives and this portable one.

Snagged this hard drive to expand my PlayStation storage. Naturally, years of PS4 games piled up and I needed somewhere for them to go with my PS5, as you don't get a ton of storage. It took a while to get things transferred over, but I have been impressed with how fast and smooth things run. It was a little warm after hours of transferring, but I haven't noticed it being warm during play. It's not going to break any speed records, and certainly isn't as fast as an SSD, but it does the job just fine. I haven't tried to load/store any PS5 games yet, but I know there was an update that fixed the earlier reviewer's issues. Lastly, I have not checked the speeds of games loading on this versus the PS5 directly. While I know it is slower, it isn't an issue for me, as I was more concerned with space than loading speed. I haven't noticed any performance issue once games are up and running, so it does exactly what I need it to do!

While this can be used for gaming, I needed to add storage to my Mac desktop with good reliability. I need to transport my content between work and home, and this suited my needs perfectly - no extra power supply required. Fast, Quiet, and (I bought the 2TB model) cost effective storage. Pre-formatted exFAT that both MAC and Windows recognize. Performance is virtually indistinguishable from my internal disk. ***Update: After running this for a few months side-by-side with the WD-Black SSD 500GB model, here's something interesting - I have a 50GB file I want to back up. (source is internal M.2 1TB storage) - I tested both this 2TB unit and my WD Black 500GB SSD. The 500GB is MUCH faster in the beginning, starting off over 500GB / second but soon it slows down. I assume there's some internal caching and it overflows the cache and balances speed to the SSD write-speed. The 2TB platter unit (this device) starts out at similar speed, but eventually balances out as well. 2TB platter average = 115MB / second 500g SSD average = 49MB / sec (note Megabytes, not Megabit.) My workstation is USB3 (3.2 Gen A?) compatible on a Dell 3640 Professional workstation (was Mac desktop and USB 2) So for short, quick read/write the SSD is lightning-fast but for large-file transfers, this 2TB unit sustains write speeds twice as fast. I bought this one to replace my other sd external ssd which died from a common firmware issues. This one works great and have had no issues with it. Games install easily and run flawlessly with no noticeable delays.

This drive has some occasional stuttering when playing games but it isn't enough for me to stop using it, even for live service games like Fortnite. I don't think the transfer rate is as high as advertised but its good enough to play games from it. Most drives don't have a fast enough read-rate but this one does. I also used this drive to edit videos, images, and audio from and then save to. I also did use it for programming (Python, VS Code, HTML/CSS/JS, etc.). I didn't really notice any stuttering from working, just the games.

Western Digital, along with Seagate and Hitachi are the big three spinning disk manufacturers, so it's hard to go wrong with any of them. This particular drive has a lot of "gaming" marketing in the description, but don't be fooled, this is a standard USB hard drive, same as any other in the last 20 years. This one has a nice metal case with pretty cool looking logos though which is why I chose it over competing plastic-cased drives around the same price.
