  • Much more challenging that depicted
First off, you can only split wood about 8" long, any longer and you just can't get a grip on the wood. The standard length for firewood in m area, and what I cut, is 16" long. This splitter us useless with firewood of any species at this length. Second, anything with a diameter greater than 4 inches is difficult to stabilize on the 1" wide ratchet points. extension (pipe) for the handle for extra leverage. The 22" knife just doesn't provide enough leverage for harder wood, even at only 8" in length. The best success I had was with Western Red Cedar, an easy to split wood I use for kindling. I heat my 3,000 sq ft shop entirely with a wood stove and use a lot of wood in my fireplace insert in my home, and each year I go through a lot of firewood {2-3 cords) and a LOT kindling. I found that even holding an 8" chunk of cedar and trying to split it into 1/2" kindling is not any more safe that using a hatchet, perhaps not as safe, You have to reposition the chunk several times up the notches to get to split, a function of the narrow, knife-like blade rather than a splitting blade. Your fingers are always too close for comfort because you have to hold on tighter, closer and longer due to the instability. As I sometime do with evaluations prior to writing a review, I as for feedback from a couple good friends. They observed my test(s), made suggestions on how to use this splitter more efficiently and safely, and, after an hour, came to the same conclusion. It isn't going to get much use, if any. I had high hopes but must admit to being disappointed. For now I'll stick with hatch and/or splitting maul. ... show more

  • Underwhelmed
I should’ve known that this wouldn’t really work very good on anything besides small pieces of kindling. You actually have to hit on stuff pretty hard to split it and then if it’s not real straight grain, it won’t split. I ended up using a rubber mallet on the hammer to split some wood. That was easier, but probably not the safest way to use it. ... show more
