  • Simply the best
Color: Black Style: 660 - Large
Simply put, this fan is the best you can get. Vornado is such a great company with the warranty they provide and their products have an amazing reputation. I have two of these fans and they help tremendously in the summer when it is very hot. I have central air and it is so expensive to run. The unit is from the late 90s before energy efficient were two words you’d put in a row. This helps move air around the room extremely well and keep you comfortable. Pro trick is to aim it above head level towards where your wall and ceiling meet. With two of these even at full speed which is really powerful, they cost cents a day, and help save you money. Not too loud noise level, and generous cord length too. Highly recommend! ... show more

  • Vornado Model 660: A Good Performer and Worth the Money
Color: Black Style: 660 - Large
Vornado Model 660 Fan: Vornado fans are not necessarily inexpensive fans, but I think they are worth the money. The model 660 is currently one of their largest floor models, and can move a lot of air. Right now, in the middle of being under a heat dome with temperatures reaching the high 90's and up to 100 degrees, I have been using mine constantly - sometimes by itself, and other times in conjunction with the AC. This Vornado 660 has four speeds; I found the lowest speed to be very quiet. As you increase the speed, the fan is understandably louder - as it would be with any fan. This fan does not oscillate, but you can change the angle from pointing down to the floor to up toward the ceiling. It is also supposed to be easy to open up to clean the blades, but I cannot comment on that yet, since I have only had the fan about two weeks. ... show more

  • Love it
Color: Black Style: 660 - Large
Highly recommended. I’ve purchased this twice now because it’s wonderful and it’s worth it. It comes pre-assembled. Nothing to do but plug it in. It’s durable, easy to use, and works beautifully. It’s a comfortable level of air and fits my room perfectly. It’s durable. although does need to be cleaned at least annually with a feather duster cleaning tool you will have to hunt down and purchase separately. The power is better than anything else I’ve tried so no complaints. Really my favorite fan until they come out with something that can allow you to add water to in order to produce cold air ... show more

  • Terrific fan - I’d get another in a second
Color: Black Style: 660 - Large
Does just as advertised. Strong, quiet, moves a lot of air around. At the moment (temp in 90s all this week) I’m sleeping with a window a/c on low and this fan moving air around not only the room it’s in but into connected spaces. Works beautifully. Keeps things cool with just a touch of ac to lower the air temp slightly. Even on medium easy to sleep through (and I’m a light sleeper). I also bought an ARA for stronger air movement on first floor. That’s a different beast for a different purpose (move air longer distance). I may also get another of these because it works so well at what it’s supposed to do. Vornado customer service (needed for ARA, not this) is fantastic. ... show more

  • Okay, I’m a fan
Color: White Style: 460 - Small
[UPDATE] – I bought one of the first of this model when it was introduced, before there were any reviews for me to read to see if it was any good or not. Since that time, after living with it for a while, I have some different feelings about it, enough to move it from a 5-star to a 4-star item. It seems the company is having a hard time selling them (duh, at that price?) and they have been giving them away. It’s easy to love when the sting of $57 doesn't come out of your own pocket (they’ve dropped the price since then). I felt then and I feel now that it is overpriced. I left my original review unedited below and here are some new thoughts: 1. The rear switch has become a pain. Hard to reach and impossible to see. 2. The area around the switch gathers a lot of greasy dust very quickly, which is way too easy to get on your hands when you’re groping for the hard to find switch. 3. The up/down tilt slider takes two hands to operate. You have to hold the base while you wiggle the fan into position. For the price I would have expected better fit. 4. The noise frequency changes depending on how the fan is tilted. In some positions it vibrates, which makes more noise. 5. I’m not as excited about it as when I first bought it. I hope this update has been helpful to you. [ORIGINAL REVIEW] One of the first electric home gadgets was the electric fan, and for good reason. Unlike most small appliances a fan is bought not out of convenience but out of necessity. And fans have changed very little over the years other than cosmetically … the two most popular current styles perform the same basic function as they have since Philip Diehl invented the first electric fan in 1882. For all the differences in size, shape and price when we shop for an electric fan we are choosing based on three factors: 1. How much air does it move? 2. How much noise does it make? 3. How does it look? There are hundreds of brands of electric fans, most of them not brands at all but just nameplates affixed to a generic item. Of the brand names Vornado has a commanding share of the market share despite selling for many times more money than a generic fan you can buy at the local discount department store. Most Vornado fans feature a complex air flow design that differs from most other brands in both how it looks and how it works. The Vornado 460 is one of the newest models, designed as a “personal” model to be used in smaller rooms or offices. I recently went on an epic two week hunt for the “best” fan for my bedroom. This review is presented to share some of what I learned. Some of it is pure infodata and some of it is based on my personal preference. I hope it is helpful to you. DESIGN Before even getting in to how much air it moves and how much noise it makes my fan shopping trip proved one thing to me – most fans are just plain unattractive. Table fans, no matter how large they are, seem to all share the same basic DNA. Most are either an open metal cage or formed from plastic and most would earn a grade of “utilitarian” in terms how they look as opposed to being even moderately attractive. Open metal cage fans generally move more air because there is little to obstruct the air flow but direct the air least in a particular direction because the air is scattered randomly in the general area toward the front of the device rather than being concentrated. Open metal cage fans (and plastic ones that mimic their design) are well suited to offer an oscillating feature because the air flow is more generalized than pinpointed and it needs to be spread around. Plastic fans often feature a cage design that harnesses the air flow better and localizes it more than metal cage fans. The Vornado models (which were the last models I researched because frankly I didn’t like their somewhat weird design) use a very specifically tuned flow design to maximize air movement in a very pinpointed direction (which makes them better when used as fixed rather than as an oscillating fan). The Model 460 is, in my opinion, one of the first fans I would call attractive, if not beautiful. More on that subject later. AIR FLOW Comparing how much air a fan moves is a very inexact science. While there are standardized measurements (CFM) that offer a good reference for the total volume of air that passes through the fan, how it is dispersed is actually much more important in practical terms when choosing which model to buy and dispersion is a function of the design of the blades and fan housing. The shape of both the rear intake fins and the front output fins on a Vornado fan are meant to in a sense accelerate the sensation of air flow directly in front of the unit, which allows a physically smaller fan like the 460 to feel like it is blowing more air than a fan twice its size. In real-life use in my home I sensed a volume of airflow about 10’ directly in front of the Vornado fan to be equal to, if not a little more than, a 16” traditional metal cage table fan that I was replacing. NOISE If you’ve read the reviews of electric fans from several brands sold here at Amazon you may feel a bit frustrated that some people will claim that one model is very quiet and other people will claim that same model is noisy. That’s because fans are unique in that it’s not so much how loud they are but the frequency/pitch of the sound the blades make as they blow the air. One brand of fan can make relatively little noise but the frequency of the sound can be irritating and annoying which another brand can technically be louder but the sound frequency is more soothing and much more pleasant to listen to. How “pleasant” a fan sounds is 100% a personal decision that can only be decided by actually listening to it. That said, after much comparison shopping, I found the Model 460 to be virtually silent on its lowest speed when the fan was placed on the opposite end of my bedroom. At the highest speed the fan was still bearable to allow me to sleep comfortably. I attribute this to the fact that the sound frequency is of a lower pitch and there is no disturbing vibration or blade rattling which results in the sound being very consistent. While I haven’t compared “tower” fans here because they are not the same as traditional desk fans my experience with them is they tend to do better moving air around the room rather than concentrating it in one direction. I have several of them and none of them are what I would call “quiet” when set to their lowest speed so to me they are not well suited as a bedroom fan. CONTROLS By their nature fans gather dust and tend to get grimy after a while. Yet most fans place their controls right in front of the blades where they have the flow of the air blown right at them. For that reason I have found push-button fans to be more unreliable than those with rotary knobs The least dependable (after owning many fans with them) are electronic controls. The Vornado 460 takes a bit of a different design approach by mounting the rotary on/off/speed control on the rear of the motor housing on the back of the fan. While slightly less convenience to reach (and even harder to see at a glance what speed you are on) the control placement is smart and dependable and requires less internal wiring and less to go wrong. The knob is large and easy to turn (important for elders) and less inviting for toddlers to play with. One appreciated feature is that the first position after "off" is the high speed, which is exactly the same as my ceiling fans, my range hood fan and my car fan. It makes sense that when you turn the fan on you might want a fast cool-down first before changing the speed to a lower level. The body casing molding earns and “excellent” rating in terms of safety for use around children or pets. It would be very difficult-to-impossible to get fingers, paws or objects anywhere near the rotating blades. COSMETICS While the Model 460 rated highest in my test for forward air flow and quietest operation when used in my bedroom, the design was what put me over the edge in choosing it. Simply, it is the most attractive table fan I’ve yet to see. It has none of the weird garish look that most plastic fans have and runs circles cosmetically around any traditional table fan I’ve seen. The case is understated and in a way almost elegant in its simplicity. From a small but secure base rises a bright chrome arc to which the fan is mounted. By sliding the fan up and down the arc you can change the vertical angle of the air flow, from down at the floor to up at the ceiling. Remember, the vortex shaped design of Vornado fans do not lend themselves to using oscillating mechanisms (which suits me fine, much less to break, jam or cause uneven air flow). So the horizontal direction this fan blows is determined by rotating the entire unit. The case is constructed of a mixture of high gloss and matte plastics that make it look almost like a piece in a museum of modern art. And best of all (for me) is that the identical unit is available in either black or white, with the white one being PURE white, not the typical yellowed ivory white that most fans have. ... show more

  • A Pleasant Intro to Vornado
Color: Black Style: 460 - Small
This fan has pros and cons, but is overall an absolute powerhouse. Airflow is very strong; it successfully keeps me cool and comfortable in my office that regularly reaches 80 degrees. Speed settings are pretty minimal (there are only 3.) As far as noise level goes, they range from somewhat loud-ish, to very loud. It's pretty basic: no oscillation, no remote, no timers, nothing. It's just a fan. Although the fan is primarily made out of plastic, it is pretty heavy and seems durable. Although it's pretty expensive for the small size, I'm absolutely loving this thing. Since purchasing this fan, I've purchased 2 more Vornado fans (a pedestal fan, and another small fan like this) through other sources and love those as well. ... show more

  • Best room fan
Color: Black Style: 660 - Large
This thing is great, purchased it for the main bedroom and it works great. I like that you point it up and it cools down the room. I keep it on low at night and the temperature is just right. Other fans that oscillate at eye level wake me up at night when I get too cold.
