Top Amazon Reviews

  • An excellent buy for a high quality wide angle lens
Size: Nikon Z
People probably get their reviews of camera equipment from photography sites, and then consider whether to buy from Amazon. I bought this here because I had accumulated a lot of points, and I decided to get myself a present. The selkler is the manufacturer (Viltrox), and it came well packaged and quickly. I am extremely happy with this lens. It is sharp, it is very "fast" (at f1.8, it can shoot at much higher speeds with equivalent ISOs than most lenses near its price), and it has surprisingly little distortion (vertical straight lines on the edges of photos do not "lean in"; they are vertical as they should be). There is modest vignetting (images are slightly darker in the edges) but this is easily corrected with editing software. The lens is good for landscapes and wide group shots. I use it on a Nikon Z8 which has so many pixels that I can pick out whatever smaller part of the photo I like and enlarge. That doesn't defeat the purpose of having an extreme wide angle; it just increases my flexibility when this lens is on the camera. I have just barely tried using it to take night sky photos. It captured the stars well (you need a fast lens to have a short exposure to avoid "star trails"), but I will need more practice/experience to see if I can do the amazing Milky Way Galaxy shots that I have seen from others. The lens is sturdy and feels well made. I got it on sale for 20% off, but it's standard price is still very reasonable. ... show more

  • Fantastic budget lens for landscape astrophotography.
Size: Nikon Z
I purchased this lens specifically for landscape (wide-field) astrophotography (e.g. Milky Way with landscape foreground) and I imagine that a lot of people are looking at this lens for the same reason. With landacape astro a fast lens (aperture of f/2.8 or bigger) is essential if you are shooting without a star tracker. Bigger apertures allow you to reduce your shutter speed and and (hopefully) avoid coma (elongation of the stars due to earth's movement). The Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 and 24mm f/1.4 in manual focus (because autofocus doesn't work well with stars) are what you commonly see recommended for landscape astro on a budget. And both of those are wonderful lenses. However, I have both lenses and recently the 14mm (which is, admittedly F mount) has been staying in the bag. The primary reason is the speed of the Viltrox. My usual choice was the 14mm because it gives me a little extra latitude in my composition and with a Nikon Z7II, f/2.8 was fast enough to get me around a 20 sec. exposure at ISO 4000 without any significant center frame coma and manageable noise. However, there was still some coma in the corners (for the pixel peepers out there). Using the 16mm I did lose some width, but not enough to compromise my "looser" framing and more importantly, I gained one and a third stops of light. Going to f/1.8 allowed me to drop my shutter speed to 13 sec at the same ISO and in astro every second counts. At 13 sec. coma is simply not an issue. I haven't used the Viltrox much in non-astro situations, but I think that extra light will be a tremendous asset in other low light situations. So in the end, why get this? - Is the image quality significantly better than the Rokinon--probably not. - Is the price significantly better than the Rokinon--yes, but that's for the MF version. The AF version is around the same BUT it doesn't come in a Z mount, only F mount which means you have to break out the FTZ. - What about the build quality--they're about the same. I'd give a slight edge to the Viltrox, but I haven't used the MF Z version of the Rokinon. Neither are flagship quality, but both are well above OEM plastic kit quality lenses. - How about that nifty LCD window on the lens--it's neat but it not necessarily accurate to the point that I would rely on it for a repeatable focus distance. - Buttons. The Viltrox has 2 user programmable buttons on the lens. In the end, while there are similarities between this and the Rokinon, as a Z user I went for the Viltrox because 1) it has AF; 2) it is in native Z mount; 3) it is faster and 4) it has 2 user programmable buttons. Based on this lens, it looks like Viltrox is serious about grabbing a piece of the third party Z lens pie. I'll be keeping an eye on them, for sure. ... show more

  • Excellent lens. Tack sharp. Great for Milk Way/Night Sky Photography Excellent lens. Tack sharp. Great for Milk Way/Night Sky Photography
Size: Nikon Z
Excellent lens. I use this on my Nikon z7II and z6 cameras for night sky photography. It is well built and tack sharp. If I had to pick a complaint it would be the screen on the lens is not ideal while working at night. I did program one of the buttons to turn the screen off. I would prefer a physical button for this ...but the custom function works OK. The Viltrox app worked well to connect with the lens and change settings. I would like to be able to turn the screen off until turned back on ...but can live with the function button as the lens is excellent otherwise. ... show more

  • Wonderful for astrophotography and a tremendous bargain Wonderful for astrophotography and a tremendous bargain
Size: Nikon Z
The lens is well made, feature rich, sharp from corner to corner and is a tremendous bargain for under $500. When I first attached the lens, my Nikon Z7ii could not detect the aperture. I turned the camera off and reattached the lens and it worked. My lens came in today and I have attached a few images from it this evening. ... show more

  • Lots of fun; some vignetting Lots of fun; some vignetting
Size: Nikon Z
I've been having lots of fun with this 16mm lens. I hadn't used such a wide angle lens, before, and this seems to have me seeing the world differently. I'm used to looking for critters or splashes of color, small and far away, and this lens forces me to walk around looking for things that are close or big. I'm loving combining the close and the distant. I notice some vignetting, but it's milder than some other not-quite-so-wide angle lenses I've used in the past, and it hasn't been a problem so far. The lens has been worth the price! ... show more

  • Very High Quality Lens
Size: Nikon Z
I was looking for a Nikon Z mount lens for some interior shooting, landscapes and particularly night time landscapes with the Milky Way. This lens came to my attention via a few review sites that I respect and all of which gave it very positive reviews. I've never purchased a Viltrox lens before but the build and image quality are both very good. I've had limited time with the lens but I'm very happy with the purchase. It was going to be this or the Nikon 20mm f1.8 and I liked the wider field of view this lens has. It is also priced well below the Nikon lens. It has a metal body which makes it a bit heavier than a plastic body but it feels really solid. It is replacing a Sigma 14mm F mount f1.8 lens. That lens was much larger than this one and I couldn't use screw on filters with it. This lens will accept 77mm screw in filters and works well with the Kase magnetic filters and adapter set I use. ... show more

  • Viltrox Is One To Watch
Size: Nikon Z
My wife bought me the Viltrox 85mm 1.8f lens over a year ago for my birthday. Until then I had never heard of the brand, but the build quality was excellent and images are tack sharp. Then when I found out the cost of the lens I was blown away. So when word and reviews came out about this lens and its price point I snatched it up and I wasn’t disappointed in any way. Build quality is superb. Ring actions are smooth. Responsive auto focus at depth. Weather sealing looks effective (living in Thailand and it’s rainy season this is a must). Its price is more than the 85mm I own but still a fraction compared to the Nikkor/Sigma brands and still well below the Tamron. This is money well spent. ... show more
