  • Very Good Monitor - Simple and Easy to Setup and Use
Baby monitors...one of the items parents spend a lot of time looking into and easily getting frustrated about. Should I get sound only, a video monitor, wifi enabled, FHSS or smart features? Take some time and decide what features best fit your needs before you register or buy a product you might end up hating down the road. We decided right off the bat that we wanted video capabilities so that filtered us down to FHSS systems or wifi based smart cameras. I will say right off the bat both have their pros and cons and I want to explain them a little before I give a review of the product because those reasons are why we went with this product. If you do go with a wifi enabled smart camera (Nest, Arlo etc) I recommend getting a camera that is designed for babies in mind. We got the Arlo Baby and really liked it because it was really designed for a nursery with climate warnings (tempature, humidity, pollution), crying and motion alarms, two-way talk, night light, music, and easily paired to my Alexa devices. Then of course being connected to wifi so that I could see the nursery from anywhere on my smart phone via the app. BUT, there are some downsides to wifi cameras like these. More spotty connectivity. If the internet goes down so does the camera. Hacking concerns (really did not concern me) if privacy is your issue and for me what became my biggest issue was network setup. I am a pretty tech savvy person and I had a lot of trouble getting this onto my network for reasons I still don't understand (Apple's HomeKit might be the culprit...though I don't use their HomeKit). But this also means if you travel...maybe for the holidays to the in-laws, in order for this camera to work you have to get it setup onto their wifi network. No Wi-Fi, no camera. Wifi pairing issues? No camera. Or maybe you're going to have your parents watch the baby for a day or two. In order for them to access the camera they need to download the app and either login into you account or you have to set them up as an authorized user. Parents don't have a smart phone? No camera. So I LOVE this camera for at home, even with the occasional signal issues and I think smart cameras are fantastic in the long term for the nursery especially as the baby gets older and is moving. But when you're dealing with a newborn and an infant having something that is easily setup in a matter of seconds that works is really beneficial. Enter this review. I was very close to going with the Infant Optics DXR-8. If you've looked at any reviews you will see it consistently at the top of the list. It's been around for awhile and is the go-to monitor in the mid-price range. But in a few review websites I saw the Eufy win out and it got me curious. If feels like a direct competitor to the DXR-8, with the same price and from what I can tell nearly identical features and IMO some improvements. Both are closed networks using FHSS which is more reliable than wifi. So check for both. BUT DXR-8 runs on a 2.4Ghz and I've read that this can cause interference issues if you're running other devices on your 2.4Ghz wifi. Just something to think about. Both have cameras that can pan and tilt. Eufy wins on pan (330 vs 270 degrees) and DXR-8 wins on tilt (110 vs 120 degrees) Both have attachable wide angle lenses and can zoom in. The DXR-8 wins on range at 700ft. BUT with 460ft in the Eufy I have no issues in a medium sized house (two story, 2400sqft). Both have night vision which is critical. Both also have very similar features like temperature readings and alerts. I honestly don't really care about either and it's not a deal breaker regardless. So where does the Eufy outshine the DXR-8? The monitor and screen. the DXR-8 is 3.5" and the resolution is only 240p. For as much praise as the DXR-8 gets that resolution surprised me. Some won't care but I like to watch my kid breathing since he's a stomach sleeper and I'm irrationally paranoid about SIDS. After watching several user reviews I was just overall disappointed with the screen quality of the DXR-8. The Eufy however boasts a much larger 5" screen with a 720p resolution. It's not as clear as a smart phone per say but it is very nice and that screen size really helps. User navigation and design is also much simpler and cleaner on the Eufy. Overall product design is just much cleaner as well. Then there is battery life, the one consistent complaint I've read about the DXR-8. They boast 6 hrs of on-screen mode and 10 hrs in power saving mode. Most friends I know who use the DXR-8 get no more than 4 hours and are on their second or third battery. Honestly they look like the cheap lithium ions I put in my mini drone. I can't comment on the quality of the Eufy battery and the one downside is it's not user replaceable. But it claims to have a battery life of 7 hours display and 15 hours in power saving mode. and as of now I've read no complaints to indicate similar battery issues at the DXR-8. If you want a smart app features, or the ability to record then Eufy is not the camera for you. This camera is about simplicity and at this point it's absolutely perfect. I just need something to watch my kid and let me know he's awake, asleep or not in distress. There is ZERO SETUP. Plug them in and instantly paired....which makes travel a breeze. I've experienced almost no lag or connection issues and compared to most dedicated video monitors this has one of the better screens I've seen. If I have issues I will update this review, but for now I highly recommend this camera and give it the edge IMO over the DRX-8 if you are on the fence about them like I was. EDIT 7/21: both camera still work very well. Eufy has remained my primary. I still enjoy the Arlo a lot and I believe a firmware update helped solve my connection issues. Eufy is still the easier one to connect since it isn’t smart. The big downer on my Arlo smart camera…a lag of about 10-20 seconds. That lag wasn’t quite as significant when I first bought it. Food for thought. ... show more

  • Great camera with too many quality control issues-excellent customer service
Update 1/9/2020 Sorry I’ve gone back and forth but I’m done-it stopped working again and now my son relies on the music to help him sleep. It disconnected and no matter what cords we use or outlet we use, the monitor won’t connect to the camera. One star-great customer service but I shouldn’t have to deal with this. Update 1/2/2020 Eufy has amazing customer service. They saw my review and urged me to try some new cables which they sent me free of charge. I was hesitant because I didn’t want the problem to occur later on, but since they had been so good to me, I decided to give the new cables a shot. I’ve been using the new cables for 2 months and the camera has not failed yet! I’m bumping my review back up to three stars. Further, for the trouble, eufy refunded me half of the price of the monitor. All in all, for my troubles with this product over the past year, they’ve sent me three new systems, a new set of cables, refunded half the price of what I paid, a Bluetooth speaker for my troubles, and a charging pad for my phone. I didn’t ask to be compensated for any of this-they just offered without hesitation. So their customer service is awesome-always willing to help and take suggestions for improving the device. The monitor, when it works, is better than any other on the market. I’ve tried several others and they are all cheap-the music on them sucks and sounds horrible out of the speakers, the screen is small, and it’s a pain to mount some of the cameras. Plus-you can’t apply software updates to the other ones I’ve tried. However, I don’t think I should have to be the guinea pig for a product commercially available. There should be no need to send out three versions of a product. That makes it seem like there are some quality control issues. So buy this product and know you’ll get great customer service, but you might have to use that customer service because there could be issues with the monitor. Update: 11/17/19 I can no longer endorse this product. While there have been bugs and the company has been extremely helpful in fixing these bugs, there are just too many for this product to be available to the public-this past week was the final straw. It seems there is a problem with where the USB cable connects to both the power plug and the monitor/camera itself. I went to bed, thinking the monitor was charging, and woke up to a dead monitor and my baby screaming in the other room. I figured it was user error at first, even though I’ve used this monitor for almost a year, so I tried it again the next day. With the monitor, when I wiggle the usb cord and the power plug, it loses power randomly. There’s some faulty connection there. I can’t have this, not with my baby in the other room and my reliance on this product working. Similarly, there’s a weak connection with the camera. I traveled with this monitor two weeks ago and had to set it up at my parents house and on three occasions, the camera lost connectivity and the only solution was to wiggle the power cord until it got power back to it. I’ll be buying something else and will reduce this to one star. There simply needs to be more testing done on this product. Update: 8/31/19 The Eufy monitor continues to be really great and the customer support is amazing. However, the battery life has severely dropped over the last few weeks. We've had this for roughly 8-9 months and now we have to plug it in during the day when he is sleeping or else the battery will quickly die out. I think what hurts the battery life is when our son is trying to go to sleep, we have the video on for however long that takes with the music play, and so sometimes the video will be on with the music for up to 30 minutes at times. He takes 1-2 naps a day now at 10 months old and so the video/music may play for an hour a day and the battery just isn't up to the task for that. It's a shame because we love everything about the monitor, but it's a pain to keep the charger cable and the monitor plugged in wherever we go. It's not a issue at night because we plug it in, but if we're downstairs doing laundry or watching tv, it's a pain to run up and grab the charger. I wish the battery was replaceable in these. Still 5 stars because it's a great product, but the battery definitely hurts. Update: 5/13/19 Eufy customer service e-mailed me yesterday to inform me of a software update which gives the option of turning the video screen ON when a certain audio level is reached (you can selected the noise level on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the loudest) WITHOUT emitting an alarm. This is something that has been asked for by the community for quite some time. In the past, you could only turn the screen on with a VERY loud alarm which was annoying when we were sleeping. So this update is huge. While I wish they would come out with a better way to get these updates out to the community (right now they just send me an e-mail through Amazon customer service informing me of the update...so if any user hasn't emailed them to inquire about their product, they are kinda stuck with it), this monitor now has everything I need in a baby monitor. Yes, the kickstand isn't as robust as some other products, but I don't mind it. I'm updating this review to 5 stars. I wouldn't consider buying anything else. Update: 4/21/19 Eufy Customer service has been great. They immediately e-mailed me instructions on how to update the firmware and that helped the temperature a bit, but it was still about 3 degrees higher than what the ambient temperature in the room was. I e-mailed them again and their engineers went and sent another update to me. Life has gotten in the way recently with a newborn, but I finally downloaded the new firmware today and the temperature is reading EXACTLY what it should be with ZERO issues. For the inconvenience, Eufy also sent me a free bluetooth speaker, which was nice. I've updated the review to 4 stars, from it's original 3 stars. The only reason this product doesn't have 5 stars are for these two reasons: 1) The kickstand sucks. As the wirecutter review noted, it's too easy for it to fall over. They should update the model with a new stand. 2) While customer service is great, they need to come out with a new way to update firmware for their products. Right now, they basically send me an e-mail to search for something like "e7fjCh5fk" in Youtube, and that gives me a link to a how-to video from their engineers on where to download some files and update their firmware. A company as large as this should really invest in a central website people can go to to view these files and download the updated firmware. All in all, I would recommend purchasing this baby monitor-the video quality is second to none. Update: 2/23/19 We received the new monitor and it seemed to work great for a day, and then the temperature was back up to 143 degrees for a few minutes before dropping down to 73 degrees. It switches intermittently it seems. I've e-mailed the company and hopefully they have a fix. ----------- Original review: We've bought a few monitors to try out and this one has the best picture quality out of anything we have tried. It is clear enough that I can see my baby's chest rising and falling which is very comforting to us. It was easy to connect out of the box and definitely appears to be the most technologically advanced wireless (non-wifi) monitors we have come across. The setup is a breeze and requires nothing on your part The main thing I don't like is the temperature. 90% of the time it says it's 143 degrees farenheit in my son's room when it's only 68-70 degrees. That's a major problem for me. I've requested to return the monitor and get a new one-so hopefully I won't have the same problem, though there's a few other reviews stating they have the same problem, so we will see. Another drawback is the alarm function. While there are two volume settings you can enable once the noise exceeds a preset amount, both of them are extremely loud. We had it setup for one night on the low setting and we both startled awake any time it alarmed, so that went off. Instead, we just keep the alarm off and the volume reasonably high so we can hear our baby cry. I wish they made it so instead of an alarm sounding, the screen would just turn on. ... show more

  • Amazing camera and has gone through hell and back!
This camera and monitor (and additional camera we added 2.5 years ago with baby #2) has been amazing! Not only has this whole system lasted 3+ years so far...it has lasted 2 toddlers. Unfortunately, due to a freezing incident, liquid incident, a million drops and the latest breaking of the stand, we may be due for a new monitor. BUT everything still works!! I honestly cannot say enough about the durability of this monitor, the clearness and sound on the cameras and the customer service of Eufy. My husband found Eufy 5 years ago when we were looking for new security cameras and ever since we have gotten different Eufy products and have had great luck with the products and if something did happen, customer service took care of it immediately. We had gotten an Owlet camera for our first born and it went in and out so many times and after the 10th time calling about it, my husband finally asked what we needed to do to get a replacement and they finally broke down and sent us one. During that time, about the 4th callback with issues I purchased the Eufy camera/monitor bc I was tired of not being able to see our son. My husband is the only one that will use the dumb Owlets and I have Eufy cameras for both kids now. Like I said, it may be time for us to get a new monitor bc of the broken stand and it hasn't been quite right since a freezing issue 8 months ago. But technically, it still works and is still going after multiple drops from the toddlers that constantly steal it and have to see the other one sleeping or their own rooms. I'm honestly surprised the monitor lasted this long after how many times my kids dropped, threw and stole it...on top of the usual wear and tear. This particular purchase (2022) was for a gift...our original purchase was in 2020 and additional camera in 2021. ... show more
