I bought these through the Amazon Ware House Deals and they looked new to me . The Block had two extra slots and I added a 7 inch Santoku, plus an 8 inch Butcher knife . This set has a 4-inch paring; 6-inch boning; 8-inch chefs'; 8-inch Serrated edge bread; 10-inch slicing rounded end ; 10-inch sharpening steel; kitchen shears; slant hardwood block . These are stamped blades and thinner than some . But due to the metal tempering methods they have a high Rockwell hardness rating and will cut as well as most forged blades while retaining sharpness . When the need to sharpen comes along if you haven't tried to cut nails, used one for a pry bar, or tried to cut a beef leg bone (they make cleavers for that), etc., generally a few strokes on the steel does the job . Word of advice don't use an electric sharpener on any knife unless it's cheap, poor steel, and one you want to throw away soon . There are carbide, and ceramic, hand held V notched sharpeners that are easy to use and don't ruin a blade or its' temper . Victorinox gives a guide for sharpening on a steel and it works pretty well . My wife and I both have been impressed and pleased with the long term use of Victorinox knives . We do hand wash them, but most knives should be washed that way . I base my review on use of these and the use of approx. 80 sheath type hunting knives I own and use on butching large game . Some are ground blades, high carbon forged steel, some stainless, some costing hundreds of dollars and all high Rockwell rated . Believe me I know good steel when I use it . These are excellent kitchen cutlery for a reasonable price . Is there better out there ? Perhaps but get ready to dig deep in your wallet or purse when you buy them and expect little difference for everyday general kitchen duty . ADDENDUM: Four years later wife and I still love these. Just read a test done with 8 top selling kitchen Chef knives . Although far cheaper, than any of the others in price, the Victorinox Chef knife out scored Wusthof and Cutco Chefs knives consistently in cutting . Only two VERY EXPENSIVE Japanese Knives beat it and the Victorinox Chef Knife was rated the best buy available . I have three expensive forged Chef knives and I agree with that test too. A thinner blade doesn't mean an inferior one. Tempering plus steel makes a blade and Victorinox has that right . Actually my favorite forged set is one made in France and has fairly thin blades . Just thought I'd share that.

I have had these knives for about a year now. They are incredible. The weight and balance is beyond anything one would expect from knives in this price range. Perhaps the best part about these knives is the comfort of the handle, which far exceeds any other knife I have used. The fibrox handles are a little strange at first (at least they were for me) because they are softer and grippier than most other knives. I have really come to enjoy the feel, though. It offers a great sense of security and allows for a precise grip. I tend to grip the knife with thumb and forefinger at the edge of the blade and handle with my other three fingers secure on the handle; this grip works well for my hands on the larger knives in this set where such a grip is appropriate. The blades are sharp and of very high quality. With daily use, sharpening is rarely needed. (maybe a few times in the last year? Not a memorable amount by any means) I think this set is great for anyone who wants great knives, not just those on a budget. I guarantee if you bring your Shun- or Henckles-weilding friends over, they will be blown away by the quality of these knives. I would also recommend the santoku, which offers much of the versatility of the chefs knife with a lighter weight, which makes it really nice for doing lots of mise en place for big dinners.

These are great knives for the price. I'm not a professional chef but I enjoy cooking as a hobby. I have several high end knives for fishing, hunting, camping and the toolbox, but I've always used cheap knives from Walmart, Target, etc. for cooking. I had become so accustomed to using "bad" kitchen knives that I cut myself twice with these the in first week. They are remarkably sharp. So sharp, in fact, that it takes very little force to slice through meat, fruit, vegetables, and apparently fingers. My sloppy cutting techniques had to be corrected once I realized how easy it was to cut through food and into....well......me. Anyway, great quality. Durable handles that are textured so your hands won't slip. The knives are well balanced and easy to control. Good blades. Easy to clean. Oh, and if I didn't make myself clear enough, THEY ARE FREAKING SHARP! Anyone who doesn't have a good opinion of these knives is someone who shouldn't have been shopping for knives in this price range to begin with. If you don't like these knives, you're probably not going to be happy with anything that costs less than $500.

Having suffered with a randomly mixed collection of cheap knives for a long time and in celebration of our kitchen remodel, I started shopping around for a set of quality knives. Being the researcher I am, I spent a lot of time looking at reviews of the high end products out there like Global, Shun, Henckels, etc. Liked the ultra-cool look of the Global. Liked the collective reviews of the Shun. So why'd I go with the clearly lower quality and prestigue of the Forchners? Ultimately I realized that neither my wife nor I are tremendously into cooking and the high end become impossible to justify. But I did want a set of very good knives. If you do some searching around for reviews like I did, you'll soon realize that, especially given the price, these knives are well reviewed. They occupy a space, almost uniquely, between the best-quality/high price and the low-quality/low price options. Sensibly the price falls in between. It took a little while to get the set because it was on back-order but now that we have it, we are very satisfied. My wife still can't believe how nice it is to have good knives - she was incredulous before we got them that it could be be that much of a difference. I knew, having had some experience, that, if only for safety reasons, having a good sharp knife is worth it. You are far more likely to cut yourself forcing a dull, crappy knife through food than gliding a sharp with far less effort - so commit to regular sharpening too if you are going to commit to owning a better quality knife. This set includes the knives you would typically need (unless you plan to cut a lot of bone-in meat) and the block has a some extra slots for big/long additions. Obviously, these knives are no work of art and the fibrox handles, while sanitary, look kind of cheap. But the balance to the knives is good and don't cause either my wife or I any strain. So all in all, a good deal and deserving of 5 stars based on the value.

When we got married, I went out and bought my wife some of the best knives I could find at the normal retail stores--A $500 set of gorgeous Japanese knives called Global. They were fashioned from one piece of metal (no plastic handles), were said to hold their super sharp edge for a long time, and had great balance. We liked them, but returned them in a matter of weeks because we did not feel they performed as amazing as the high price tag warranted. I then did some better research and settled on this set. I'm still impressed nearly 3 years later. I got motivated to write this when a few days ago I was cutting something and was impressed how the knife still easily glided through the produce I was cutting. This is a review for the common man, the lazy man. We do not sharpen these professionally, nor really at all. And they are still very sharp. The price, being 1/4th of what we paid for the Global knives, made me feel very good about these as well. They are not as elegant to look at, but they will get the job done. I did use the big knife for a purpose not intended for it and managed to snap the tip off, but we still use the knife as normal now. This is a great mid-level knife set. Not too fancy, not a center piece or conversation piece. But also not going to hurt your wallet and will definitely get used. We actually bought a set for the mother-in-law because she liked ours so much and used to borrow it whenever she was cooking large meals for guests.

great set of knives, it's not the best brand out there but it's a great deal. They cut great and do the job. I think these should be consumers best buy knives..even comes with the sharpener. Odd thing is sharpener says it's made in England and the knives say Swiss..I don't care though.. there are some empty slots though after you put the knives in which kinda annoyed me, but I just bought the 12 set of paring knives on amazon. I have yet to receive those though even though I'm a prime member. Some of the sellers aren't on it when it comes to prime. Anyway these knives pared w/ that xox board work great. you know how people hate to use knives? at least I hate it.. but i realized it was because i had crappy knives. Man onces I had these I am all about cutting becuase it cuts so clean and nice and EASY!!! No pushing and using the teeth of the knives. bought a promotional set at Sams Club other day for 75 bux and you might as well given me saws as they were just using the teeth of the knives and your force. NOT a good cutting experience. again thess aren't those 100 a piece knives but they are Darn good. I spent an extra 50 bux but I got much higher quality and it has all that you need bread cutter, a regular 8" chopping knive even has a filet knive which is what they use at the butcher shops to make those baddas strips thinly cut love that thing!!! So yea as I said overall I'm very satisfied and have bought all my family these same knives too. don't buy those knives from those darn guys at sams or where ever who show you oh HEY look at me!! I can cut through anything! it's a scam. These are the real deal holyfield! I gave it a 5 stars, one thing as i said that i didnt' like was there were extra holes in the holder, i mean its not a deal breaker and the knives are great!

For the money, I don't think you will find a better set. The last time I moved, I lost my previous set of much more expensive knives, and grabbed these after seeing the reviews, to tide me over for a while till I could spring for a pricier set. Well, I don't think I'm going to bother now. I've been using these close to eight months, doing anywhere from 5 to 10 meals a week, and I haven't had to take them to get sharpened yet. I've never been a fan of plastic handles either, as they've always felt cheap to me before, but this set is really comfortable. I work late a lot during the week, so many times I'll cook two or three meal in a row over the weekend, to save as left overs for the weekdays. This leads to a lot of hour or so long prep sessions, and I have to say that I've never experienced any fatigue since getting these. The grips feel really natural in the hand, and the knives have great balance. For the money, I was extremely surprised by this set. These make great everyday knives, and I'm going to order another set as a housewarming gift for some friends who are getting the space to set up their first 'real' kitchen. Sure, you could spend a lot more for a bigger name brand, but honestly, these will probably be really close, and you really aren't going to get a lot of return on the extra money you're spending. Now just to find a matching cleaver to help finish filling my block!

We researched for quite awhile before deciding on the 8 piece Fibrox set. Our son is a sporting knife collector and recommended the Vicorinox brand, but wanted us to read reviews. We were not only impressed with the number of reviews, but with the number of positives. We are not disappointed! They are lightweight, super sharp and the Fibrox handles are nonslip and feel great to grip. Read all the reviews. Several people have added great information to help in the use and care of these amazing knives. Washing and drying immediately after use, as recommended. Never heard of a slicing knife, cuts through a ham like butter! The reviews also helped us decide how to fill the two extra slots in the block. We will be adding the 5" serrated chefs knife and 7" Santoku to complete our set. You will not be sorry if you purchase these knives which are not only fabulous, but a great value!
