  • Works to Air Up
I've been looking for a way to air up my 4x4 tires without spending a king's ransom to get the job done. I have 33" tires that are larger than the "up to 31"" tires the product specs states. The lowest I air down for overlanding is 15 psi and when I air back up, 30psi will work. So, I'm only looking for 15psi from this little pump. In an actual test, starting at 15psi, this pump took under five minutes to air up one 33" tire to 30psi. Upon disconnect, the pump was warm but not hot. The power cord was cool. I think this pump will take all four 33" tires from 15 to 30 psi, especially given a little cool down time between each air up. This beats overlanding compressors that sell for $200 and up. Like other have said, the canvas bag is too small, but I successfully re-packed the bag. Just make your coils tight and it'll go back in. ... show more

  • Great inflator, not so great carrying case
This tire inflator works great. It seems much sturdier and more powerful than inflators I've used in the past, and I found a lot of good reviews for this model while researching online. I was initially daunted by having to use my vehicle battery as the power source, rather than a cigarette lighter, but with an SUV that has large wheels this is definitely the way to go. No worries about blowing a fuse or taking forever for the tire to fill while the motor burns out. My complaint is that the inflator arrived in a box that was no longer intact. The adaptors for different types of tires were missing (they apparently fell out somewhere en route), and the carrying case for the pump already had two significant tears in it upon arrival. I had looked forward to having a case to contain all those cords, instead of just a box that falls apart, or a tangle on the floor of my vehicle. The skimpy case that comes with this product looks nice at first glance, but it's no match for the heavy motor and protruding parts. I had to patch the rips with tape before I even used the product, to keep the damage from spreading further. I'm not going to take he trouble of returning it, but I'm disappointed that this product wasn't everything I hoped it would be. I would have paid a few dollars more for a case that would properly contain the inflator. ... show more

  • Overall very good, but with some drawbacks.
I give the Viair 87P portable compressor four stars instead of five because it has a few drawbacks. However, overall you should be well satisfied with the performance of the device. I am able to store the compact compressor with the spare tire in my vehicle's tire well, so I can tote it around in my car for emergencies without loosing valuable cargo space. The compressor and storage bag both appear well made. Actually, I was impressed that the compressor is such a solid little unit. It worked fine bringing four tires up to recommended inflation pressure. The well-machined brass hose tip screws onto the tire valve stem and forms a good seal. It is easy to turn the hose tip on and off using bare fingers. The on-off switch toggles smoothly. DRAWBACK - GAUGE IS UNNECESSARILY HARD TO READ: The 87P compressor is rated to 60 psi but has a 120 psi gauge, which makes it unnecessarily hard to read. I have a Viair 88P compressor too, which is rated to 120 psi. Both the 87P and 88P use the same pressure gauge. It's obvious to me that the manufacturer sticks the 120 psi gauge on the 60 psi compressor so they don't have to stock 2 different gauges at the factory. This is a case where manufacturing convenience/cost savings has taken precedence over value and usability for the buyer. DRAWBACK - HOSE IS FAR TOO SHORT: The integral 3-foot air hose is far too short in practical application unless the compressor is used with a small vehicle. However, extra 6-foot hose extensions can be purchased. I bought 2 extensions. The extension hoses easily attach to the compressor's 3-foot hose and to each other, yiedling a total 15-foot hose length. The compressor performs well with the 15-foot hose length. However, the extension hoses are just rubber, whereas the compressor's integral 3-foot hose is protected by a tightly woven fabric jacket. It's obvious to me that the reason the compressor's integral hose is so short is so the unit will fit in the storage bag. I view this as another clear case of manufacturing convenience and cost reduction taking precedence over value to the buyer/user. The extension hoses cannot fit into the storage bag with the compressor. DRAWBACK - DIM LIGHT: The compressor has a built-in light, but it is not particularly bright. DRAWBACK - CHEAP CLIPS FOR HOLDING INFLATION TIPS: The 3 inflation tips that come with the compressor are attached to the base with plastic clips molded to the base of the compressor. One of the clips was broken in the box when I received it. I removed all the tips from their clips and put them in a plastic baggie. With the plastic clips located on the base (which I view as a design flaw), the tips are bound to pop off and get lost when the compressor is placed on a hard surface or if it gets even a bit knocked around. Plus, the plastic clips are not what I consider durable. ... show more

Sounds powerful for a tiny thing the engine is metal. It takes up almost no space! Worked great for a truck and regular car! The only thing I will not like is putting it back in the tiny bag. It’s sized to perfection but when your in a hurry or if you are not patient to fold all the wires and cables back like factory you’ll have to get a different bag to just throw everything in there fast. Other than that great!! Haven’t tried it with my long bed truck if everything reaches good but will soon update! For now RECOMMENDING! ... show more

  • Fine for topping up tires
.... which is all I need this for. It brings a tire from a few pounds under, back up to spec in just a few seconds. Gauge is accurate within a pound or two when you shut the motor off. It's still better to make the final adjustment with a good tire gauge. It's quieter than you'd expect. Confirming, electrical cord is 10 feet, air hose is 8 feet. As others said, to get the diagonally opposite tire you have to run the power cord across the top of the engine. Not an issue for me as you are supposed to check the tires cold anyway. A roadside repair, laying the cord across a hot engine, would be dicey. I could reach the spare tires in the back of my cars by running the power cord back down the same side of the car as the battery. And it had no trouble taking those tires from 55 to 65 psi, quickly. I guess for a large truck you might want the model with the cigarette lighter plug instead if you have a power outlet in the back. The hose is stiff plastic at room temperature and it's pretty stiff in winter. The included adapters for blowing up sports equipment are stored in little clamps down by the feet.... Easy to miss and easy to lose. I'm storing them in a separate ziplock bag. For what I wanted to spend, for just topping off tires, this does the job just fine. ... show more
