Great pot for the price, Very sturdy, and yet light. This is a great size for a large pot. Anything bigger becomes very difficult to handle/stur/clean. No major complaints or concerns. The pot assembly was of average difficulty. I took the valve apart because reviewers claimed there was a large amount of automotive lubricant inside the valve body. I only found a moderate layer over very sticky automotive grease in the valve, which would give an off flavor for the first few uses until it wore off. The valve took some force to disassemble, but no parts were damaged. I removed the grease from all internal surfaces with lots of scrubbing with dish soap followed by scrubbing with 90% isopropyl alcohol. It was tough to remove. I think probably all pots under $400 probably have valves with automotive grease in them. You get what you pay for and I was extremely satisfied with the cost and functionalitie of this pot. The screen works fine and is decent quality. I add a washcloth on top because I am cooking corn meal and don't want the fine powder to fall through the screen and scorch. I have used the pot several times now and the only time it leaked at all when completely full is when I hit the temperature probe several times with a large mixer attached to a drill while at cooking temperature. The pot leaked a tablespoon of liquid then stopped, no maintenance needed. The temperature probe is strong. My only complaint here is that I feal the gage is not quite accurate through the entire temperature range from 40 F to boiling. If you set the guage to be accurate at one end it seems off by around four or five degrees at the other end of the range. I am not certain because I do not have a calibrated guage to check against it and my laser thermometer is not super accurate with liquids and stainless steel. The guage is handy to have installed because the temperature at the top of the pot can be 40 degrees different than the top with high starch liqids, because the liquid does not convect/mix the heat around the pot much and low and slow temperature or copious mixing is needed for even heating in any large pot with a viscous liquid. Quality and Price is Amazing

Very Pleased with this Brew Kettle. I purchased the 16 Gallon at such a good price that I was skeptical of the quality. Kettle arrived and I was instantly surprised. The Kettle is well made, very sturdy, and has good weight to it. I assembled it and put it in the shower, fill with water for a leak test. I did not get the drain valve tighten enough and had a small slow drip which was easily fixed with a quarter turn of the inside nut. Leak solved. The temperature gauge was good. Needs a better mash screen and welded fittings

This is both a surprising value and a disappointment. The base is thick and seems multi-ply like a Brewers Beast kettle. If it had welded fittings instead of bulkheads I’d be happier about it, but the price would go up. I got this as a mash tun anyways, so having it on my propane burner wasn’t a concern. Which brings me to my disappointment. The mash screen is a bad joke. It folded and stuck the very first mash I ran through it. The kettle is built with a dimple around the perimeter to retain the screen instead of having feet on the screen to hold it off the bottom. This also means your aftermarket screen won’t make a good mash bed as it leaks around the dimple. This kettle has been relegated to hot water tank/grant, which is a shame considering its base would make a great boil kettle, if it had welded fittings. - Medal-Winning Homebrewer ... show more

Not actually 5 gallons, but perfect for me

It fits my needs. I was able to modify this to an all-electric all-grain BIAB with a 1500w element. However, buyer be aware of some things: Cons: - the 20quart is not actually 5 gallons. You can calculate the volume from the kettle’s dimensions, and see it’s not 5g, if you aren’t sure. Just taking the reported outer dimensions, you get a volume of 4.72. Actual may be 4.5gal if filled to brim. - the false bottom is convenient, but I wouldn’t run grain directly on it. - if you use a bag for biab, the thermometer will tear the bag up. I installed a thermowell on the bottom and didn’t need the thermometer - there are no volume indicators on the kettle - the rounding at the top should be a full 180°, instead of 90° (less messy during spray down) - kettle walls are a bit thinner than higher end kettles - the rounded indentation that acts as the shelf for the false bottom makes cleaning more challenging. Most of these were cons for me, given I had low expectations for the price. And I planned to mod it, anyway. Pros: - cheap - surprisingly good construction for a low price - easy to modify Other info: - there is about 0.5 gallons of unrecoverable dead space below the front port - it is about 1.5 gallon to the false bottom from kettle bottom - it is about 3.5 gallons to the bottom set of handle rivets (the ones closest to the bottom of the kettle). This is also about the maximum volume you can boil in this kettle. - ~4gal to top set of handle rivets I modified this kettle with the following - 1650w temperature controller with thermometer - 1500w bulkhead heating element (I recommend 1600w, as 1500w struggles to boil unless partially covered) - thermowell for PID’s probe - large capacity stainless steel colander for sparging - small bag for biab - stainless steel wok spoon for mixing mash - 1 gallon graduated pitcher for sparge water - large capacity boiler for heating sparge water (I use this for coffee and such) My goal for this build was to use as many kitchen items as possible to keep brewing-specific hardware to a minimum. ... show more

quality for the price

If you follow the directions and use a real wrench and pliers, instead of the flimsy wrench supplied, it assembles the first time with no leaks. Surprisingly sturdy for the price. The false bottom and bazooka tube make it a nice mash/lauter tun, which is my intended use. If I were to use it as a boil kettle, I'd make a copper manifold to sit on the kettle bottom and get rid of the false bottom and bazooka tube. The current design would waste a half gallon or more of wort, so consider scaling up your recipe to 5.5 or even 6 gallons if you want to collect five gallons with the false bottom/bazooka tube design. And good luck not clogging the false bottom and bazooka tube with hop residue. ... show more

it's alright, but needs tinkering

good quality materials and a competitive price. But I had two main issues, it was a pain to get it to stop leaking from the thermometer and the spigot holes. I suggest making extra effort to tighten as much as possible without shredding the o-rings. The second issue is that the thermometer will give false readings unless you constantly stir the grain around the probe, so be prepared for that and keep a secondary thermometer at hand to get a 'second opinion'. Lastly, you will need to make a run to the hardware store to get something to connect to the spigot so you can attach a tube when emptying. ... show more

Wow, for the price, this kettle can’t be beat. Heats up evenly and is large enough to handle large amounts of grain. The temperature gauge was accurate and ball valve made the transition to a fermenter easy and efficient. Highly recommend!

Leaks from rivets in handle.

I was very excited to have this product to help make large batches easier to handle vs my old standard 2gal pot. I filled it up and it held water at first until it got to 110F then my wife noticed there was a lot of liquid on the stove top. The rivets are not tight enough to actually create a water tight seal when under temperature causing quite a bit of loss I'd say about 1qt in 10mins. One mess to clean up later and this pot was right back into the shipping box and sent back as a return. I also have their 8gal fermenter and thus far I have had no issues as they advertise that product as being able to be carried and moved with worrying about leaking. I would have expected the same quality and craftsmanship from the fermenter to be applied to this pot but it's not and feels like a cheap product with some bells and whistles such as a thermometer and valve to make it feel like you spent your moneys worth. Honestly I'd say just go get a standard 5gal cooking pot and a mesh basket to screen out your mash for cheaper and just as effective use without any leaking. ... show more
