  • There are no electronic contacts, so the lens can't talk to the camera at all!
Regarding Venus Optics Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra-Macro Lens: The first thing I noticed was that there are no electronic contacts on the base of the lens, so the lens can't talk to the camera at all! This is a really cheaply constructed lens. The next thing I (as a long time pro photographer) notice, is that in order to shoot at f/11 at 1/250th in broad, sunny daylight at noon, you have to have your ISO set to 1600. What this tells me is that the apertures marked on the lens are not even close to accurate. If this was really f/11 my ISO in noon daylight ought to be around 160, not 1600! So you will either need considerably more light than the noon sun, or you will have grainy shots, on all your shots. Next, this lens is a super close macro lens, so close that if you had a wasp to photograph, he would not even fit in the frame, at your widest zoom. This can be good, if you want just super small things, but you should understand that this is almost a micro lens. Because it is so close-up, your depth of field at f/16 is only about the thickness of a single grain or salt. This is to be expected for such a super-macro lens, but again, for most people this will be too small and too difficult to work with. The biggest two issues are stated above but I'll say them again, the f-numbers on the lens are wrong and exaggerated to make it sound like it has good low light capabilities, it most certainly does not! They could have included a nice little diode ring light that they make for this lens, but they did not, and I can't actually find anywhere to buy it. But you could greatly use it on every shot with this lens. f/2.8 is more like f/11 and f/16 is really about f/128, and because there are no electronic contacts, you don't get to view things through the lens' maximum aperture, you have to view through whatever tiny iris opening you have dialed-in... so the low light capabilities really suck- you could say the lens only works in bright daylight. Another thing that sucks is no vibration reduction whatsoever, again, as I said, this is a cheap-built lens. I will say that the optics (if you dial in an ISO above 1600) are capable of some nicely focused images, though the depth-of field is very shallow even at the smallest apertures. An imperfect lens, but it still has some usefulness if you know enough about photography to work within its limited feature set. I've included a close-up of part of a small feather, this was shot at the widest zoom, so you can get closer, but you can't go wider. It only focuses out to about two or 3 inches, maximum. So now you know what this lens is about. I think I've stated all the information you need, to know if this lens will work for you. ... show more

  • Superb!
All metal and glass construction. No plastics. All the movements smooth as silk. Optically an exceptional joy, especially for the price. I’ve only had the lens a few days, yet I am taking macro shots now that have eluded me completely until now. Photographing millimeter fossil insects in amber has brought out detail only otherwise seen through my stereo microscope. This is not the lens for the casual macro photographer. It requires careful knowledge of macro photography — and patience. If you are prepared to give it the attention and effort it deserves, you will love this lens. UPDATE: I've had this lovely macro lens for two years now. With the proper setup, it is capable of very deep and sharp macro shots. The two photos I’ve included here are of a tiny flying insect that has been caught in amber for a few million years. The insect’s body is about two millimetres in size. Macro lenses are cursed usually with a very shallow depths of field. Pushing the lens down to f/16 gives you a bit more depth of field, but you need more light, more exposure time, and less sharpness. Both photos are the product of focus-stacking software, combining around 80 photographs. No matter if I am taking macro shots of tiny flowers or of very dead trilobites, I am so happy to have the Venus Optics Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra-Macro Lens. ... show more

  • Great macro lens!
I am totally pleased with my purchase of this Laowa macro lens. I've used it now for a couple of months and there is so much to say about this lens. Being a macro lens it does not have internal stabilization or auto-focusing features but to me, that is an OK thing. I use sturdy tripods to gain control over the stabilization issue and manual focus is best for macro lenses, at least in my case. Manual focusing is a little stiff but accurate and stays put without wondering. I love having the choice of 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, and 5x for all photos. Also, I purchased the ring lite which is perfect for providing ample lighting when so close to the subject. Collectively, they are the perfect macro set-up. ... show more

  • Know What You’re Getting Into
This is a lens for people willing to take a chance. Do not expect this lens to work for you, but do expect that when you work with and for the lens it will produce some truly mind blowing images. It has been documented to be a great insect macro lens but that is not the only area it excels in. Think outside the box with your subjects and this lens will reward you. It compares well with the canon mpe-65 and at the price is what I would choose if considering both. ... show more

  • Very sharp images
Very sharp images All metal construction and very well made. Must use a flash to light up subjects A focus stacking rail would help if you have that type of software. Great value for the price . I really don’t use auto focus much for any macro as close as this lens can do .

  • SUPER ULTRA MACRO LENS
SUPER LENS - Excellent build quality and super sharp. After suffering some 500-600 hours attempting to obtain reasonably acceptable in-focus pix with the more expensive alternative to this ultra macro lens (returned for refund) , I quite reluctantly purchased this highly rated lens. WOW - straight out of the box, my very first focus stack was near perfect. Very very impressed with this Laowa 25mm 2.5-5X lens. An outstanding addition to my macro set-up (Canon 5D Mark III, Stackshot, Adaptalux Lighting Studio and Helicon Focus). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!! ... show more

  • Excellent Extreme Macro Lens
A remarkable lens for extreme macro work. Crystal clear at wide open aperture, a little fuzzy stopped down but that is true of nearly all dedicated macro lenses. Working distance is consistent, about the same at 2.5X as 5X. Also can be used with an extension tube set to get even higher magnifications. Used with an APS-C sensor, get about 8.5X (at the sensor), translates to about 40X for an 18 megapixel image at 600dpi. Not for the casual user, probably not a good lens for the field shooting insects. I use on a copy stand with StackShot. ... show more
