    • I use this tripod for field and cave photography.
I like this tripod, the Velbon EX-230. It's extra light, short enough to fit in my backpack, and inexpensive. It can handle my 450g Canon camera with a 450g flash on top of it. (I use a heavy external flash.) This is a 2-way (2-axis) tripod; if you loosen the handle, it tilts up and down along a horizontal axis. For rotation around the vertical axis, I don't use the middle knob, but the knob at the bottom, which is meant for the lift column. The tripod comes with a bag with a non-adjustable strap. I use this tripod for cave photography in remote areas. Lightweight is essential, and it's cheap enough so I don't have to worry about wear and tear. On my previous tripod, the rubber feet came off while dragging it along a low passage in a cave, but this one has a bag to protect it. A carbon fiber tripod would cost at least five times more, and these usually come with heavier heads for loads heavier than I need. On the Velbon EX-230, you cannot take off the head, which is an extra weight saver. Obviously, anyone taller than 4 feet has to bend or kneel, but I wanted an ultralight, compact, simple, inexpensive tripod. And that's what it is. Update 6/2018: Zippers on the bag came apart, which is too bad, because it was a good bag. Trying to repair them made it only worse, so now it's just me and the tripod. ... show more
