On the previous DSLR that I had it came with both the tulip and rubber hood to use with different lenses. The tulip hood is used when using a wide angled lense. They way that its shaped actually helps to block light so as not to wash out the picture giving you the full wide angle view with no flare or glare. The rubber hood is used with a telephoto lense. This does the same thing that the tulip hood does for the telephoto lense but this one can be adjusted by pulling out on the hood. Macro shots the hood is completely collasped, for a wider shot with distance the hood is pulled out to the second position. Finally if using full telephoto, the lense is pulled completely out forming an almost funnel shape.. The one thing I like about the tulip hood is that you can attach it to your camera and while gently pulling away from the camera lens the hood will detach from the threaded collar. This allows you to store the hood in reverse on the camera. If you use the rubber hood you will have to take this collar off as it uses a different collar. Both seem to be well constructed but only time will tell as to how much use they can take before they fail. For now, this was a great purchase for my digital camera. ... show more

Very pleased with the completeness of this hoods and cap kit. Clear instructions on how to attach the tether with an elastic loop on one end to the punch cap and a tool to assist in that process. Very thoughtful. Components all fit and of good quality.

Box came pretty beat up which was a bit displeasing especially as I've needed to wait quite a while just to order (was out of stock in 72mm for a while) let alone receive it. I don't care about the collapsible hood so I'm not going to bother writing about it (didn't even put it on). I bought the kit for the tulip hood since it is reversible, can use a 72mm lens cap (as opposed to no longer being able to use the same diameter with many tulip hoods), and because the kit came with a nice 72mm lens cap & leash. The tulip hood works. You can even just pull it right off the camera instead of unscrewing the mounting mechanism, but for safety in the long term I think I'd rather unscrew, flip, and screw back on. I don't want to damage the zoom mechanism on my bridge camera. I wanted the 72mm for a fun little Finepix S1, which if you want to use a non-OEM hood/filter (or a combo of the two) you have to get an adapter ring thanks to it only having a bayonet mounting mechanism. The adapter rings are all 72mm from what I can tell, and I haven't found another seller on Amazon that offers a reversible tulip hood that's 72mm. So of course, I waited until it restocked. If there's anything I'd change, I'd like it more if the hood came with markings of some sort for guidance. Due to the mounting mechanism, the hood itself can spin freely instead of locking into the correct orientation like a typical hood. This means it can be knocked out of place with a bump which isn't great, and it involves a bit of guesswork as to whether you've got it centered perfectly when you do put it on or re-adjust it. I think even just putting lines in the center of the outside each petal, especially at the base of the hood piece, would be helpful in giving you a good reference point. It doesn't matter too much for me since, as long as the camera is stable, the petals do not obscure the image on my camera even after rotating 90 degrees (improper hood orientation). If it is a bit wiggly then the petals can appear when pushing my camera's stabilization mechanism too much. Since this is a pretty minimal intrusion, I'm not too worried about centering it just perfectly — but it'd still be nice. ... show more

    • Pretty good hoods

I just got this set so this is a first impression. I think this is a good value and a clever kit. I just bought a used Nikon 28-200 zoom lens which came with the correct Nikon lens hood, (HB-12) which is huge. It makes the lens look like a trumpet. And I don't think it is effective at shading the lens, too shallow and wide. Rather than protect t, I think it makes the lens easier to damage. To be clear, this set consists of two hoods, one tulip solid plastic hood and a collapsable two position rubber hood. Not meant for use at the same time. I always like rubber hoods for the protection they give even when retracted. This one does vignette at full wide angle but is fine at the half position. Adjusting it is an extra step if you are busy shooting but the vignette isn't that bad if you forget. The tulip hood is solid plastic and cleverly designed. An inner ring screws into the lens. The hood snaps in place using sprung ball bearings. Of course, the hood is free to rotate, and it takes some attention to keep in position. Not so bad, but it is a down side. Yes, it is reversible. The Nikon lens cap that came with my lens sits too deep in the ring to reach the release buttons on its sides, but the one in this kit has recessed release finger pinches on the front, just right for the lens hoods. This is a pretty detailed review considering I haven't taken a single photo with it yet. I'll revise it if I find I missed anything. Given the price, I am not disappointed. ... show more
