  • Best boot I've ever worn....
Size: 13 Color: Red Oak (P)
Sizing: I usually where a size 13 in Adidas and Nike running shoes. I bought a size 12 and 13 (yes both sizes) and they arrived at my house in about a week. The size 12 fit good, but I thought my toes were a little tight in the toe box. They (size 12) felt fine while walking inside my house, but I think when on the trails, up and down hills, etc, my toes would probably start being crammed into the end of the shoe, so I went with the 13, since there is no option for size 12.5. How I use the boot: I do SOME hiking, but mostly this boot is on construction jobsites all day. I'm a project manager for a small construction company, so I might be on 3-4 different jobsites each day. Or I may be doing paperwork in the office. Boot is solid on gravel, asphalt, mud, climbing scaffolds, crossing creeks, or climbing rocks. Great boot overall. My foot situation: I wear custom orthotics (aka...custom made insoles). I have a very high arch and had major foot pain for years until a foot surgeon recommend I try custom orthotics. LIFE CHANGER. That being said, I took the Vasque Sundownwr size 13, left the factory insole in the boot, and put my custom orthotic insole ON TOP OF the factory insole. Yes, I have the factory insole PLUS my custom orthotic insole, and the size 13 for perfect. If I only used the factory insole, size 13 felt a little big. If you can't decide on 12 or 13, and you think 12 MAY cramp your toes, size up to the 13. And FYI...most folks on here say "wear thick socks." I just wear regular men's black tube socks from Target. Works fine for me. The boot: As far as the boot feels.....AMAZING. I had some of the Italian made sundowners when I was 17 years old, and this boot is JUST AS AWESOME. Redwing leather definitely feels great, looks great, bends easily, just an awesome boot all around. Food for thought: I ordered the vasque Sundowner (in size 12 and 13) AND a pair of Redwing Classic Round boots size 13. Redwings fit perfect, but lot of slip in the heel due to long break in period. Once Redwings break in, they are awesome. My plan was to choose between the Redwing boot and the Vasque Sundowner. After wearing the redwing few days around the house, I realized the leather insole in the redwing was going to take A LONG TIME to break in. Awesome boot, but leather insoles are tough and take a long time to break in. The Vasque Sundowner has a regular foam insole and more of a flexible cemented sole (vs the Redwing Goodyear welt sole). With my foot pain problems, I don't have 3 months to wait for the redwing boot to become comfortable. After just 1 week the Sundowner feels amazing. Verdict: BUY THE SUNDOWNER!!! You'll love it. And as an added bonus, Vasque includes a set of red laces in the box. These red laces look great on the dark brown leather. ... show more

  • My dad told me to get them and I don't regret it
Size: 8.5 Wide Color: Red Oak (P)
Had to buy the men's 8.5 because they didn't have 10.5 wide in women's. But whatever. Sundowners are awesome! You just have to keep in mind, hard boots HURT to break into. It will hurt for a long time but eventually they will become the best boots you'll ever have. Luckily for me. I got to skip the pain and they actually didn't hurt very bad breaking into them! The support I get from them is unreal. Just be sure to get yourself a nice pair of insoles to go along with them. I know it's expensive, but your feet will thank you. ... show more

  • STILL A GREAT BOOT!
Size: 12 Wide Color: Red Oak (P)
This is my 3rd pair of Vasque/Sundowners over 50 years. My first pair were pre-Sundowner Voyageurs from the late 60's. Fantastic. In the 90's I bought Italian made Vasque Sundowners. Fantastic. My foot grew out of them a year ago due to aging so I bought a new pair of the Viet Nam made boots this year! Fantastic. Are super comfortable, and are comparable to my previous pairs. To buy a boot that is one piece full grain leather upper and Gore Tex and as well made as the Sundowner for under $250 in my opinion is a feat. (No pun intended.). Great boot. Granted, I am not a hard core hiker. I am more of a walker who likes to wear boots on my regular 2 mile walks because of the ankle support. Yes, some of the stitching now is not as fine as my Italian made Sundowners, so I can understand the disappointment in some who see a lessening of quality. But to me these still carry the Sundowner personality, and at a great price. Love em. ... show more

  • 2nd pair - initially pleased
Size: 10.5 Color: Red Oak (P)
I bought my first pair in 2008. They lasted 12 years and fit like gloves. They took me up Kilimanjaro, to Macchu Picchu via Salkantay, around Banf, to Colorado, Vermont, and on day trips up and down the AT. I loved those boots until the soles finally fell off in 2020. Kids have damped our hiking lately and only this year did we decide to gift each other new boots. I was put off by the pictures of the Sundowner at the Vasque website and leery of the reviews saying the soles didn't last. I recall reading similar reviews back in 2008. I'm pleased by the initial quality. The fit is tight but I recall the fit of my last pair feeling tight until they were broken in. The boot is much nicer looking in person vs. the Vasque website. The pictures on Amazon are much closer to reality. The red laces they include in the box are a cool throwback to the 1980's mountain boot fashion during my high school years. I passed up the black color on sale to get the brown and I'm happy I did. If these last another decade, I'll never miss the extra cost. ... show more

  • Great Boots!
Size: 10.5 Wide Color: Red Oak (P)
I've had these boots for about 10 days, and I am very pleased with them. I was looking for a pair of leather hiking boots with Gore-Tex for winter and rockier hikes, but that wasn't built as heavy as a mountaineering boot. I was hesitant to purchase the Sundowners because of the poor reviews of the Chinese-made model, but these seem to fill the bill nicely. I ordered a 10 1/2 W, the same size that I wear in the Breeze III GTX (a fantastic boot, by the way). At first I was afraid that the Sundowners were too narrow. But, I've worn them around town on errands and I have 10 - 12 miles in them on walks, and they are breaking in nicely. Still a little tight around ankles, but I expect that will go away, soon. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the Red Oak model comes with both brown and red laces! I look forward to many miles on my Sundowners. ... show more

  • Great boots
Size: 13 Color: Red Oak (P)
I owned a pair of these Vasque hiking boots 40 years ago, loved them and worn them out after many, many years. Could not at that time find any locally again. I recently became tired of buying boots that wore out and leaked water after 6 to 12 months, and was thrilled to find them on Amazon. In my opinion, no boot waterproofing is as good as the original GoreTex! I did order a size larger than I normally do, and they fit just right. ... show more
