  • A lot of bang for your buck
Style: Mouthpiece
First off - this piece will not be for everybody. If Dukoff made a hard rubber mouthpiece, the Jumbo Java series, this would be it. I actually own a Dukoff D8, and the T75 is just as bright and edgy, but with more body/core, and I prefer this piece as my main MP. If I had a premium lig like a Silverstein, I would feel like I can do anything with this piece. Right now, I’m using a Rovner lig, and a Fibracell 4. I play a lot of funk, R&B, ballads, rock and for the content I play, this piece gets the job done done because I can get that sexy, edgy sound, and can still cut through amplified guitarists who are in love with hearing themselves. The tone & intonation is even from bottom to top, (which is a little surprising considering my Fibracell reed has a short vamp), and altissimo comes with ease. It’s free blowing, but with a slight amount of pushback. If you’re a cane type of person, I recommend keeping the reeds in the family and go with the green box Vandorens. The red box reeds were ok but they gave me this weird attack to my notes that sounded kinda chirpy - but that’s just me, it may be a little different for you. Unfortunately, this piece doesn’t come with a ligature. Boo. ... show more

  • Bright, open tip, projecting mouthpiece
Style: Mouthpiece
I am kind of an intermediate level sax player. For perspective..... I have only recently figured out how to hit altissimo notes above F# --- I can hit the notes for about an octave above F#. I am trying to master sub-tones etc. I can get a growl out of the sax, but I really need to take lessons (I am self-taught so far, using the internet and books). I was a mediocre clarinet player decades ago, so I knew how to read music and work with a reed instrument. This is a very well made high baffle mouthpiece. I would say that quality is five stars. I am giving it four stars because the sound is so bright that it becomes harsh, and because I found that compared to the two other mouthpieces that I own, the very low notes are a little more difficult for me to play softly. The Jumbo Java T75 plays very brightly, so it may be great if you are looking for a bright sound. This is a mouthpiece that wants to be loud, but you can play it at lower volume. I used Java Green reeds, ZZ's, Rico Jazz Selects, and Fibracell 2.5, and all seemed to work well with the mouthpiece. I was looking for a rock type of sound when I purchased the T75 Jumbo Java and this mouthpiece was said to sound somewhat like a metal mouthpiece, so I thought is might be worth a shot. I was using this mouthpiece with a Yanagisawa T901, and that was probably a mistake on my part because the T901 is a bright sounding saxophone to begin with --- combining a bright mouthpiece with a bright sax led to a sound that was too shrill. I have since purchased a metal #8 Yanagisawa mouthpiece and I like it much better. The Yanagisawa is more versatile for me. I can make it play bright, but I can also sound good playing ballads and oldies from the "Real Book" series). I also find that lows are easier to play softly on the Yanagisawa metal than with the Jumbo Java, without losing anything on the highs. If I could do it again, I would give the regular Java (hard rubber, not metal) mouthpiece a shot instead of the Jumbo Java. The Vandoren website explains the differences in their mouthpieces, as well as the tip opening sizes and facing length options. ... show more

  • Great all around piece.
Style: Mouthpiece
I really enjoy the mouthpiece. It is both loud and cuts through but at the same time you can get a full jazz tone on the lower register. It is a very flexible mouthpiece.

  • Great Value in Mouthpieces
Style: Mouthpiece
I have used this Jumbo Java T75 tenor mouthpiece for about seven years now. It is one of my favorites. It is well suited for a bright rock type of sound. I find the control to be very good over the entire range of the horn (Selmer Mark VI). The high octave notes are loud and focused. The low notes are easy to play with control, as well . I have a Dave Guardala MB Fatboy II carbon-fiber mouthpiece that sounds and plays very similar to this Jumbo Java but costs three times more. The internal cavity geometry is quite similar between the FB II and the Jumbo Java T75. The external shapes (which have little or no impact on the sound) are not similar, the MB FB II being much more trim and of smaller, non-tapered outside diameter. For the price, this Vandoren Jumbo Java is an excellent buy if you are wanting a bright, metal like sound. ... show more

Been playing my Dave Guardala Brecker II metal for the past 30 years and love it. But also have this JJ for my Alto and decided to get one for my Tenor which is my main Sax. Love this on my Tenor and will be my go mouthpiece moving forward. Well rounded, big tone in all registers and great intonation ... show more

  • Great big wide open sound, clear and fills the room
Style: Mouthpiece
Like my Vandoren AL3 for alto (also recommended), this one's great for tenor saxes. It's even brighter and larger by far than a name-brand metal mouthpiece I've got. Very big loud sound, if that's what your after; also does a great job of facilitating growls and effects. Using w/vandoren java red 3 reeds and rovner ligature, works great. Gives you that big bold tenor sound, opens up playing range a lot as well. -ken ... show more
