  • Perfect for small projects
I do small projects but I bought it for an AR vice block because I build AR's. Perfect.

  • Clamp base came without threads…..
Clamp base is not threaded and the holes are smooth and simply too small to allow for the included screws to be of any use…. This is not a good sign… So I have a bench clamping vise that doesn’t clamp to anything. And returning this would cost more than the vise. Nice job Goehner, nice job. EDIT: the seller reached out and offered a proper way to address the situation. Regardless of QC issues, they are decent sellers. Thank you. ... show more

  • A pretty good vise
The shipping box for this vise is good. Heavy metal chunks like this normally tear up the box, but this shipping box is pretty tough cardboard that’s held together with staples and tape instead of only glue. There are foam pieces inside so the metal can’t move around. The pieces of the vise that do move are covered with plastic wrap so nothing gets scratched up. Needless to say, the vise arrived undamaged. The vise itself comes with hardware to mount it in two ways. There is a clamping base that allows you to clamp it to the bench and then move it elsewhere. That base is attached to the vise with 4 short bolts that come with it. I connected this to see how it worked and everything lined up and worked pretty well. For a more robust attachment to the bench, it comes with longer bolts, washers, and nuts so you can drill through the bench surface and bolt the vise to the bench. That’s the method I chose, and it worked well. I like that it came with both sets of hardware. Once mounted, you can adjust the rotation of the vise with an easy adjustment. The adjustment to open the jaws works pretty well, too. The jaws are removable and can be replaced in case you are rough on them. I did not check to see if they are hardened. The vise seems to work well so far. It’s a small vise, but that can be fine depending on what you are doing. The bite dimensions seem to match what is advertised. Not that you’ll need them, but the instructions are just ok…there are some lost in translation errors (it mentions the instructions only being for the “walrus”) and punctuation and grammar problems. Some images are missing from a picture that points out what all the pieces are supposed to be. It actually had lines with numbers that point to nothing because the image is gone. You don’t really need the instructions to figure out what to do, but it is still annoying that they aren’t very good. The vise itself is good. ... show more

  • Vise is OK but the mounting bolts are crap
It's an average vise for an average value. I like the fact they included a mounting bracket, which worked out perfectly for my installation. They included short bols and long bolts with nuts. I don't know if the bolts are just crap, the threads in the casting bad, or just the bolts too short. Maybe all three, but definitely the latter. I'm talking about the short bolts that connect the vise to the mounting plate, if you're using that. The only go one or two threads deep. I know they needed to keep them short or else they would hit the mounting surface, but these are too short. One of the 4 wouldn't catch any threads at all. So I took one of the long bolts, cut it off (about 1/4" longer than the short bolt) and got a much better assembly. If you're doing a through-the-bench installation with the longer bolts, you shouldn't have any problems. So, be wary of the included short bolts. You may (and probably should) make a trip to the hardware store first. I was able to really crank down on the mounting adapter, so it shouldn't move around too much. The swivel operates smoothly, and the locking mechanism is good. I've only used the vise once so far, to cut off the bolt, and it seems adequate (good). ... show more

  • Mid Quality, Great Price
This vise strikes me as a good value for the money. My grandfather was a machinist, I suspect he wouldn't have been satisfied with this vise. But, for home use this hits a sweet spot of decent quality at a good price. The quality is comparable to the best vises at my local Harbor Freight or perhaps a bit better in terms of finish. Everything works well, but tolerances aren't up to the standards of higher end vises. In particular the jaws on my vise don't quite line up. Not a functional issue, but an indication of hitting a price point. My only other small quibble is that the anvil on the back of the vise is oddly small, certainly smaller than expected on a vise of this size. ... show more
