  • More functionality for city drivers than a V2
This is a radar detector easily in the same class as a Valentine - but with a different set of features that I prefer. I was very skeptical of shifting brands, but having sold a 2014-era V1 and not having used a radar detector since, I had the opportunity for a fresh start. My list of requirements: high sensitivity for New Mexico long distance driving + GPS lockouts for city use. This was the only detector in my price range to do so without a secondary all. Coming from a V1 with the multi-segment display, having an OLED screen is a game changer. Not because it does anything useful for radar detection, but because it means I can get all the settings set without using a manual! There is also a "dark mode" in which a small white dot blinks on the OLED unless there is an alert, which is how I keep mine set. That gets you all the benefit of the no-distraction front of a V1 with all the information and voice alerts of the R7. On the 1.40 firmware (this model from Amazon was the soft-touch exterior with red accents, and arrived on that firmware) the auto-lockout feature works great. Similarly, I get relatively few false alerts in town. The user mark function is nice but I haven't come up with a good use yet. As far as range goes, on open roads you are getting many miles of detection range. Any of the major radar reviewing websites will do a better job of discussing range than I can, but suffice it to say the range is excellent for my needs. The cons: It's just not built like a tank the way the V1 is. At this price point, a metal case should be expected, or at least a truly tough plastic one. It's also a little bulkier. Lastly, the new-bogey tone overrides the speed lockout. Why?! So annoying! Finally, it has the option to display your speed along with the alert. I'd like to have an option to disable that - I know my speed. But that's a very limited list of cons. For mounting, I'm using a cheap mirror mount (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y2M9K11) with mirror power taps (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082V1245P) to get the detector in an optimal position with no visible cords. Even with the slightly bulkier detector, I like this mount method. I used to suction it at the very top, but I wanted it in the middle to get a balance between laser and radar sensitivity. Overall, you are getting the same features that require either a) multiple parts or b) much more expensive detectors in a single, good looking, functional package. I'm glad to see that the usual suspects in this area have competition. ... show more

  • Pretty Good Detector
I’m not a radar detector connoisseur, I just wanted something easy to use and effective on a long distance drive. I wanted to install an integrated system in the car but unfortunately the shop that did some really nice work on other cars that I saw was booked out over a month and a half. I needed some protection right away, well at least in a week. So I ordered the R7 along with a dual socket cigarette lighter converter from Amazon. When I got the R7 I was a little surprised. It’s bigger than I thought it would be. I didn’t update it, just used it as delivered. My set up was a little hilarious. I ordered the dual socket cigarette lighter converter so I could run the R7 and an old Garmin GPS unit I found. The reason I used the Garmin was because I didn’t really want to flip back and forth between screens on my car’s console between the indwelljng GPS and the entertainment system (long drive-needed the screen for the radio/mp3 player on all times to pick and choose tunes). I also was running Waze on the smartphone. All in all it worked out OK. The R7 was pretty sensitive. All Ka hits were real. No false alarms. There were false positives on other bands for what I suspected were blind spot monitors and the automated cruise controls. They weren’t all that common and to be honest, they kept me on my toes for what was a fairly long multi-day pretty monotonous drive, in which I really wanted to keep up my average speed per hour. I liked the direction arrows. They were sort of helpful, especially in tge early long range hits where you’re not quite sure if the source is behind or coming up in front of you. The thing is a little pricey but as you all know, one ticket with points and the increased insurance rates can cost you more than the price of thing. ... show more

  • Best radar detector available in the market so far !!
Before to consider buying a radar detector, know your local laws regarding those ! If you get caught with one of these and you are in a place where it is illegal, they will confiscate it and ticket you. In short, VA and DC are the only states where radar detectors are completely illegal. If you are a commercial vehicle, it is always illegal. Know your laws as I would hate to have someone lose such a great device to a police officer. This doesn't tell you where police are… it tells you where police who are running radar are so you can be aware. This does not give you a license to drive like an idiot either. Combine this with Waze and you will have a great tickets-free driving experience. My favorite R7 improvements compared to other radar detector: -Arrows -Screen -BSM Filtering -Ambient Light Sensor -Future Auto GPS Lockout Update -Power Cord Relocated to Right Side and Micro USB -Suction Cup Mount This detector is built on the Uniden R3 platform, which is already a top performer in the space. Uniden was listening to us when we asked for upgrades under the hood and we got faster signal processing, better visuals, and dual antennas. Build quality is good but isn't that great. If you drop this thing you are probably screwed. It creaks and squeaks when you press on joints and the body itself is super susceptible to scratching and scuffing. This maybe why they included a neoprene sleeve along with the hard case. The front face-plate seems unfinished as it moves too easily when pressure is applied. Size is definitely on the larger side and more comparable to the Valentine 1. If you are looking for a discrete detector, this one isn't for you. The power cord has been moved to the right side now so you don't have to worry about it when mounted near a visor. The speaker does sound better than my old V1 though. The mount has been improved significantly. No more wobbling and bouncing while driving and the angles have been increased. Feels really solid and more secure. There is only play when you try to wiggle left and right which isn't a real problem. I am reaching here for something to nit-pick on the mount. It is almost too good to be true for something so big. Arrows are helpful but not necessary for most. There are two camps… "if it beeps just slow down" and the "where is it coming from" teams. It is nice to have so you can be more aware of the road and surroundings. The screen can be difficult to see, especially under sun light or bright environment. I do love the size of the display which makes it easier to gather intel. All function is there to mute/mark. BSM filtering seems to be slightly improved on Hondas/Acuras. 24.199 and 24.200 can be blocked in the options. Auto GPS lockouts will be added upon patent expiration via a software update. This will make the detector smarter around town and quiet known false alerts using GPS automatically. Basically teaching your radar to ignore things just by driving around town. Why would I buy ? A larger screen with dual antennas and a future with auto GPS lockouts make this worth the upgrade FOR ME. Since Uniden is great with firmware updates and database refreshes so I expect this detector to only get better with time! This isn't for everyone at this price point. This is for someone who wants the best like I do. ... show more
