  • This is different than the other Dummies book for Ukulele
They should really try to differentiate the two Ukulele for Dummies book, because this one is really good for people who are beyond basic beginner. It's full of exercises for fingerpicking, strumming, chord changes, playing scales up and down the neck, and it has a lot of useful tips. The included practice songs for playing arpeggios are a good challenge and attainable after some ongoing practice. I find this book to be extremely useful. Most people don't know about this book because they take one look at it and mistake it for the other Dummies book for absolute beginners. I have SO MANY ukulele books now (hal leonard lesson book 1/2, Ukulele Aerobics, Ukulele Primer, Fretboard Roadmaps, plus other song books). I have recommended this book to adult students who are looking for a useful practice guide and who want to go beyond basic strumming. Kids, though, with their limited attention spans and addiction to video games and watching "Friends" reruns, probably wouldn't get as much out of it only because there's quite a bit of reading material here. That's if they are self-directed. Not to denigrate kids, I want to give them credit and say that they do quite well with group or individual ukulele instruction, especially if they are at least 9 or 10 years old. So, this book can be useful for kids if being guided by an instructor and the kids know the basics first. ... show more

  • Excellent resource
I was rather pleased to find that the "For Dummies" books on ukulele are very well written, easy to understand, and comprehensive. A great resource and guide for players of all skill levels. Price is reasonable considering the amount of information, but understand the paper it is printed on is of low quality, and the print, and thus the music sheets and tabs are in small font. You do have access to the audio tracks to help you with the lessons. ... show more

  • an all-encompassing course book
as the beloved ukulele enjoys a worldwide revival in recent years it doesn't come as a surprise that a wide variety of teaching material has been published lately. i'd like to put the cart before the horse here: this book is well worth its money! now that is if: you are looking for an in-depth study starting if maybe not from the very beginning but @ a level where you almost do not need any musical knowledge, building up to a fairly good intermediate level. puhh- my bad 4 the run-on sentence ;-) the authors mcqueen/wood shed light on many different aspects of ukulele playing and it is a joy to work thru the greatly structured material. having read ALL the descriptions/reviews that are posted on this very page up to the 21st of may: YES- i totally agree on most all of them- the not so good one(s) i commented on. THIS is what you can expect. also nice to see the environmental prudence: the book comes printed on recycled paper ;-) ... show more

  • Great book for beginners or anyone looking to improve technique
Great book for beginners or improvers. This book has got a great introduction and they cover all the basics. Before this, I taught myself some basic cords and some basic strum patterns. However, I'm really enjoying the practice exercises and the fact that this isn't a read from beginning to end type of book. You can jump around based on what you need to work on including things like strum patterns for blues, how to read tablature, different fingerings, how to read the fretboard, and plucking technique. It really is a great book for thoroughly understanding the ukulele and playing in general. I'm looking forward to the practice exercises the book does include references for reading music rhythm and fingering patterns. I'm able to gain a better understanding of the fretboard in general and how to improvise when playing with others. I'd recommend this book to anyone trying to get started in the ukulele or anyone looking to improve a particular aspect of their playing. There aren't any fingering charts that I see So I did have to pick up a book on cord fingering as well. Overall, this is highly recommended for anyone looking to get started or improve their playing. I'm looking forward to the practice section where I can improve my strumming technique. ... show more

  • This is the BEST Dummies book I have ever read- it is the best Ukulele instructional book I have.(And I have A LOT!!)
Ok this really IS a GREAT dummies book. I have bought a few dummies books and they are ok, but this one is hot! it is about an inch thick, and the pages are thin paper so there are a lot of pages, the printing is pretty small- can be a draw back especially with the riffs so small they are hard to read- but definitely not a deal breaker! There is SO much information in here, and it is very good information and explained in a way that is understandable. There are "pictures" for many riffs, exercises, songs, etc. so that you are learning by seeing how to do what he is talking about, also audio tracks to hear how it is supposed to sound. The book is broken down into parts, and those are broken down into chapters. He encourages you to look through the table of contents and pick something to study, not to read through the book from front to back. There are strumming patterns, picking patterns, finger style exercises, fretboard exercises-rock, blues and jazz just to name a few. And ideas and tips for exercising and learning how to become better in any area you want. I would highly recommend this book to everyone who is learning the ukulele! ... show more
