  • BIG FLAMES, SMALL PACKAGE - With an igniter this convenient, there's no excuse to not have one. Introducing the Uberleben Leicht fire starter, the 5/16 x 1.25" / 8 x 31.8mm ferro rod that weighs less than 1 oz. It may be small, but it brings the fire
  • BEST FERRO BLEND, PERIOD Our trademark Sanft-korr ferrocerium blend is a perfect balance that boasts both softness & durability. Ignite any fire with ease at any altitude you find yourself at or in any weather you get caught in, even when wet
  • HIGH-TEMPERATURE SPARKS - The reason you choose a ferro rod over standard flint is the ease at which it sparks and, more importantly, for molten showers of up to 5,500F/3,000C to rain down and ensure your tinder sets ablaze when you need it most
  • PARACORD NECK LANYARD - The fire starter includes a mil-spec 550 paracord lanyard that is approximately 34"/86.36cm with a secure clasp so you can always keep your ferro rod close. The paracord allows for cutting and burning to shorten the length
  • SPARK STRIKING METAL SCRAPER - You're going to need some help to start throwing sparks, so we included our metal scraper/striker. Unlike washer style strikers, Uberlebens striker is designed with a sharp edge to make sure you get your fire going

  • Practice, practice, practice
I go for long, fast walks in the woods and wanted a "just in case fire starter" to take along. The uberleben meets the requirements i had, small, light, relatively indestructible. I'm a fairly skilled camper/woodsman and use ferro rods routinely but this one is so small that it takes significant practice to crack the code on producing sparks that will start a fire. A little bit of experimentation and practice got me to the point where I could reliably start a fire. The trick is a tight grip on the cords after scraping the black coating off the full length of the rod. The striker is sharp enough to use as a last option knife to slice but the shape of the striker prevents it from stabbing/slicing the wearer. I wear it outside my shirt. I pulled the plastic breakaways off in favor of sliding half hitches and now wear it every time I hit the trail. I'd give it a 5 if it was just a little bigger. ... show more

  • For decoration only!
It would take fine motor skills to get a fire with this. That won't happen have if you are going hypothermic. I put it on my dog's collar to jazz it up.

  • I couldnt make it strike a spark?
Maybe it's just me, but I would hate to depend on it in an emergency.

  • Love this thing.
True story. I bought this to wear (more or less), as a silent nod to other folks out there who are also into bushcraft and survival. It was slightly more subtle than wearing a Pathfinder Survival School or Georgia Bushcraft t-shirt. Wink, wink, nod, nod. You know the deal. I carry a ferro rod, Swiss Army knife and a lighter in my pocket even when I am in slacks in a fancy business meeting. Turns out, this little Uberleben Liecht gets more use than any of that pocket junk. I shortened the cord a smidge to bring it up the chest a bit. It is the same quality ferrocerium they use in all their rods and sparks up fatwood shavings like a champ. Love the convenience of it and it is still like a bat signal to other people that see it and think like I do. It has sparked fires as well as some great conversations. 10/10 highly recommend. ... show more

  • It serves its purpose, and is cheaper than wazoo.
It works, but some modification would make it better. I took both off of the cord and replaced it with a black paracord sleeve with some of the red tinder string from the UST tinder cord running through the inside. I do wish that the product had that initially, as the stuff isnt cheap for string. It's not as lightweight as the one from Wazoo, but it's not as expensive either. Both the ferrorod and striker work surprisingly well. I wasnt expecting many sparks from a 1 inch rod, just enough to catch on char cloth, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it throws enough sparks to catch on any prepared tinder I've tried. All in all, a good purchase. Just be aware that you're essentially carrying an exposed blade near your neck, but it's not very sharp, hasnt so much as poked me yet (I've worn it to work (construction) and around the house everyday), and can even be considered an added functionality. I do worry about security, though. I doubt you can fly with it. Now what I will say is that you can make it cheaper if you just buy the toggles and grind a washer. The toggles are 8.99. The washer is basically free. ... show more

  • A Fantastic And Useful Ferro Rod and Necklace Combo!
This is my second purchase from Modern Outdoor Life and I'm just as happy with this Leicht Fire Starter Necklace as I am with the large Kräftig ferro rod. I like this necklace because it's not only a fantastic way to daily-carry a backup ferro rod, it's also quite stylish and easy to adjust. The two safety clasps will detach from each-other with a little prying and will allow you to shorten the paracord to the length that you would prefer. For me, I took about two inches off each end and burn the ends with a lighter to create the hardened cord so the two plastic caps won't slide off. Just snap them back together and your back in business. As for actual use, I have tried this unit out on a small cotton ball that had been caked in Vaseline. After removing the lite coating of black protectant, I was able to get the cotton ball lit after a few swipes on the small ferro rod. I do have big hands, so finding the easiest way to grip the necklace and rod was interesting at first, but not difficult. Don't expect a massive shower of sparks with this little ferro rod, you want to be prepared with your tinder, but you will get a good hot fire going in no-time. The provided scrapper works well and looks good around your neck (I've already had some positive complements on it just in the last few days) The one thing I would possibly change is to remove the teeth from the scrapper and provide a simple-sharp squared edge for scrapping. I can see the teeth digging into the ferro rod if this were to get used in excess over time and shorten the lifespan, but it would still take a very long time and it's not an issue at all..just an observation. I'm going to take this out to my property and give it a better review in a real-world settings. I'll update this in the near future with my findings and thank you Modern Outdoor Life for providing us with great looking products and very reasonable prices! ... show more

  • Cool Product - Questionable Connector
Does it work as a fire starter? Yes. But this doesn’t produce the the same spark throwing capability as a typical ferrocerium rod. The issue is the size. Surface area to be exact. It is what it is. Sure, it can throw some sparks but be ready to work more for them. I’m actually ok with that due to the form factor. The product does work and is 2nd level cool too. My issue is the connector. It needs to be bigger in order to tie off a small knot on the end of the paracord and better secure the cord to the connector. The connector also feels like it may wear out easily in a few months due to it being plastic that doesn’t feel robust to me. I doubled the paracord over at the tip and melted it together to help keep the paracord from slipping out. Looks crappy and I’ll have to come up with something else - like thinner paracord & tying w very m, very small knit. *Keep in mind, with the photo, I did this, not Uberleben. I highly encourage the company to improve, replace & ship the new connector out to existing customers of this product. Generally speaking, I really like Uberleben products. ... show more
