Being an avid Backpacker and looking for something to provide a bit of non-glaring night light and something I can use in my Backpacking Tent on a long-suspended chain I found this Candle Lantern to be perfect and has served me well over the years, since about 1993... I especially like the feature that allows me to Unscrew the Bottom for refilling the Candle instead of like some cheap Chinese junk where you have to try and take off the top or wait for a long time for the top to Cool and being unable to clean it out without a major effort. UCO also made one half this size that uses a Tea Candle, but I have not seen that version in a couple of years and wish they would bring it back. I have a 12x10x16 tent an use the smaller one in each corner which works out very well with 8-hour Tea Candles... ... show more

    • A bit flimsy, but works well
Small and doesn't take up much space in my pack. Works as expected. Chain and hook get very hot so I would avoid hanging it from nylon tent loop or similar unless using a carabiner or something. The metal is a bit flimsy, and wax has to be cleaned off of the lantern after a bit of use. Not disappointed. ... show more

    • Good amount of light from a small candle
So last night I used it while sleeping in my Tipi Tent. I was pretty impressed by how much light this little candle puts out. My tent is about 7 feet tall with a footprint of around 10 feet in diameter. I hung the UCO in the center of the tent at about 5 feet off the ground. This illuminated my whole tent! Couple of notes about this. This is a great light for your tent so you can see what you are doing as far as moving around and grabbing stuff. Keep in mind this is 1 candle and its not going to be extremel bright. Just enough to let you see whats going on. I would not be able to read by this light and when I was cooking food I had to turn on my headlamp to get better detail on how the steak was cooking. For what it is it is a great item to have. I pretty much used this as my exclusive light all night long except when having to check the food I was cooking. The candle that came with it lasted about 9 1/2 hours. My tent was anywhere from 35 to 50 degrees depending when I came in and out. I would buy this product again! ... show more

    • Quality has gone downhill
I own several UCO candle lanterns, including an original brass one and a couple aluminum ones. This new one is definitely lower quality than my others. When I received it, the body of the lantern was out of round; it had been flatten somewhat on one side, such that the base was hard to turn, and such that part of the body protruded over the lip of the base. I had to gently bend and roll the body on the flat surface of a workbench in order to true it up and make the base able to properly seat. Second, the aluminum candle "jacket" also wobbled terribly. It was necessary to bend the crimped areas at the base of the jacket slightly downwards until the jacket got a tighter fit into the base. Third, the glass chimney would barely stay up when the lantern was expanded. I had to remove the chimney, remove the top part of the lantern from the base, straighten the three "arms" that cradle the chimney, and bend the bottom of the arms inward to tighten the grip on the chimney and to center it correctly. All of that said, once I performed the tweaks above that should have been applied at the factory, this new Made-in-China UCO lantern performed as well as my older aluminum ones. It weighs the same as they do. The bail and chain are approximately the same quality as my older lanterns as well. The UCO-branding sticker on the base is centered and straight. Also after the tweaks, the supplied paraffin candle burned for over 9 hours with no drips, a centered wick, and consistent spring-action height maintenance (no sudden movements of the candle). Fortunately, as a prior UCO owner, I'm familiar enough with how these lanterns are supposed to look and work that the tweaks I performed were not terribly difficult, only time-consuming. Were I a first-time UCO owner, though, I would have been rather disappointed. My original UCO brass candle lantern was perfect out of the box. I just wish I didn't have perform UCO's quality assurance for them now.... ... show more

    • Clean burn, bright, no mess
This candle lantern worked just as described. The candle was held up as it burned. The little shield at the top kept any extra wax burned as it went so there were no spills leaks or drips at all! It also burned much longer than expected the candle said 9 hour burn time. I got 15 and STILL have a stub. I was hesitant to spend the money on it but it was worth it. It extended the life of the candle, increased the brightness and enclosed it safely. ... show more

This is a great little lantern. Packs down to about half of it's extended height. I thought the glass in mine was broken when it arrived but it's just the way it's packaged. The lantern has a small chain and hook for hanging it and it sounds just like broken glass inside the package. It is a little stiff when you open and close it but it has become easier the more I use it. Once open you can slide the glass chimney down for easy lighting. It comes with one candle already in place, but I removed that one and replaced it with the UCO beeswax candle. This candle lantern, with the round label, is made in the U.S. On the bottom it states that it is made in the U.S.A. I've seen some of these lanterns with different labels on different sites that state the lantern is imported so if you only want to buy made in the U.S. look for this round label. This is a great item for your camping kit. ... show more

A great candle lantern. Surprisingly bright, especially with snow on the ground. Easy to use. Provides a nice ambiance that an LED light just can't provide.
