So, I bought the FHSM-638 after buying a competing machine. I can now say it is a wipe out. This machine is indeed a great reminder of a full size sewing machine I bought when I first started Sewing. I do NOT claim to be an expert seamstress and sewer, but I can make basic projects like curtains, and aprons. I do understand the functions that should be universal in most sewing machines. The FHSM-638 surprised me because its competitor failed to perform basic repair work without employing interfacing while this machine whizzed right through the task without adding other interfacing to stabilize the jersey fabrics against the feed dogs. It passed the thicker fabrics test also when I tested stitching on canvas and furniture grade fabrics. I have not tried the twin needles yet, but I will say that the documentation manual was well written and included very important information like needle sizes, and caution against certain usage. This machine offers many different stitching patterns and is adaptable with some standard presser feet, but ALWAYS test the foot without power to make sure that needle is aligned with the presser foot to avoid major damage to machine or injury to yourself. The learning curve is with the feed dogs plate because it lacks the measuring guides that standard size plates have you will have to create a hack to keep the sewing straight, otherwise it is just the same as using standard sized machines. This is a great learning or backup machine. I reserve the right to see how long this machine lasts because price range can be a predictor of longevity. ... show more

That said, there are a few limitations. The foot pedal is quite small and can be tricky to control precisely, often feeling more like “on or off” than allowing gradual speed changes. While the motor is strong for its size, it can struggle with bulkier layers or thicker seams. The instructions could also be clearer, especially for beginners learning to thread or make adjustments. Overall, this is a solid, well-equipped machine that offers great value for the price. It’s best suited for beginners, casual sewists, or anyone who wants a portable option for mending and small projects. 1 star because it ran until I broke off the needle & tried to thread it again because the bobbin will not work it is not made to go back in! PS! I did not take out insurance so you know what that means insurance is nothing but a racket but if you do not pay extra! U are Sewed!!!!!

Hard to operate and much smaller than I thought it would be. Had to return, I got a full-size Brother instead, love it.

This portable sewing machine has some nice built-in features, like the built in light and the convenient spool holder. It also technically offers an option for twin needles, but the machine can barely move the feed dogs fast enough for a single needle, so utilizing two needles is simply not feasible. Another major issue is that the feed dogs are not smooth at all; the machine could not handle two layers of a stretchy fabric without completely pulling the material under. The design has a few other drawbacks as well. The included foot pedal is very small and only suitable for a child's foot, though the push-button on/off feature on the machine itself was a helpful alternative. Additionally, the expansion table does not add much actual sewing space, though it might be helpful if you are sewing on the go. I really wish I could recommend this for more than just an absolute emergency sewing machine. However, for just $30 more, you could purchase a reputable brand-name machine that would easily outperform this one by a lot. ... show more
