Description

From the time they were young, Gayle and Patricia were raised like sisters, as close as two friends could be. But they each had dreams that would take them far away - and far away from each other. Gayle was the beauty who believed that a man could make her life complete. Patricia was the intellectual who thought that rising to the top of her career would make her happy. And then there is Marcus Carter, who has been linked to both Gayle and Pat since the tragedy that occurred when they were all children. Can either one save him from himself? Can friends survive a love that comes between them? Each of them gets what she wants, but no one counts on the price they have to pay. When they realize that dreams can be hollow and love has its cost, they learn the most important lessons of all: to never give up on the people who love you, and that it isn't just blood that makes two people sisters. • The defining book of my writing career
There isn't enough I could say about this book, and there are also no words to describe how I feel about this book, in particular. This book made me believe. This book allowed me to know that I, too could become a writer. Perfectly crafted and superbly well written, it is a book, that although the main and supporting characters are people of color, it is solely as an identifier, and not the branding of the book. The situational elements in the book, all can relate to. It speaks on love, loss, family, and the sustaining ties that bind - and break as a result of life's challenges. An unforgettable read. . .A love story, about friends. You will not be disappointed. ... show more

  • Awesome book
Format: Audiobook
Wow. I didn't know that reading a 1997 book in 2023 would be so impactful. Great writing/storylines. I have the e-book and audio of this.

  • It's about life
Format: Kindle
I enjoyed reading this book. It looked at love and friendships. It showed that sometimes you can be blinded by love and go all out for a person that is just selfish. At times I shouted at the characters because I disagreed with some of their choices then at times I felt bad for them.

  • Classic.
Format: Kindle
I was just as hooked on this one as I was on the 1st installment. It was incredible to see what was going on in the lives of Pat, Marcus and Gayle! This is definitely a must read..you won't be disappointed. I wish it were longer though! I ate it up in just a day, and I truly hope DeBerry and Grant will go ahead and bless us with a 3rd book! I'd be thrilled to see Pat and Marcus as parents. It's incredible how much you learn to love these characters as though they were people we actually know. I want more!!! ... show more

  • Finding yourself
Format: Kindle
I read this book for a book club and I love it. This book had me laughing on the train coming home from work and people looking at me like I was crazy. Pat and Gayle was good friend and had very different personalities. Pat was more worried about her future, when Gayle was more worried about getting married and not having to work. As they grow older they grow apart. But with Gayle losing everything it brought them back together. It also show how a women should never put all the trust in men as far as your financial situation, because clearly you could be left with nothing. If you have read this book yet please do you would love it. ... show more

  • The most awesome book ever!
Format: Kindle
I have read Tryin' at least 15 times... Gayle, Pat, and Marcus are three of my all time favorite fiction characters. The book is well written and draws you into each sequence... I know what's going to happen and I enjoy the ride every single time. Kudos on a wonderful book- the sequel is great too! Any thoughts on a movie treatment?? Just hoping! 😄 ... show more

  • Very powerful story
Format: Kindle
The authors did a great job with showing the relationships of each character in the story. I found myself relating to Pat as a person who is smart and very driven career wise. It gives hope to many victims of abusive homes that they can Succeed against all odds.

  • Good read! Would have liked to see them all have a relationship with God to help through their problems and cope with the death of Freddy. Would have chosen a more complete ending. Expexted more of an ending such book was so long.
Format: Kindle
Good read. Expected better ending. Would have like to see them all have a relationship with God to help them understand their problems.
