This splitter is pretty awesome. I got it to help my mom break down logs into manageable pieces. It's definitely heavy, but easier to lift/drop than it is to swing a heavy axe. So definitely a lot less chances of injury fo an older person or someone out of shape. Or it can also be used by anyone to apply precise strikes, compared to a Wild swing of an axe. Super easy to use. The yellow paint is nice, but the blade should be unpainted as it just continues to leave yellow streaks on everything. It has a beefy set screw to thread into the main shaft to lock it in place when not in use. Honestly I couldn't be happier withbit, and its made splitting wood so much easier for my mother. Definitely recommend

This is a simple tool, but the concept works very well. The heavy steel slide hammer gives it plenty of force, and the comfort-grip handle makes repeated strokes easier than swinging an axe or maul. It is also compact enough to store without taking up much room. My only real complaint is that the splitting edge could be sharper. It is painted and somewhat blunt, which means the first hit does not bite into the wood as aggressively as I would like. A sharper, unpainted edge would make more sense for a tool whose entire job is to split wood. This would also have allowed a sharp "bite" on the very first stroke, increasing the stability. Even with that limitation, it performs its intended job very well and feels solid enough for regular use. I was torn between 4 and 5 stars, but the overall design, heavy construction, and usefulness make this a very good value compared with more complicated splitters.

Under IDEAL conditions this could work. Ideal would be a full round that was a perfectly square cut piece of highly seasoned wood on level ground. Their own instructions say to wedge the piece of wood you are trying to split between two other pieces for stability. Who in their right mind is going to spend all that time fitzing around with this contraption when there are so many better options for splitting kindling even if this actually worked. But it doesn't. The rod that slides inside of the handle is cut to very low tolerances and just flops around inside the handle when you have it extended getting ready for your down stroke. What this means is that if you just try to rest the wedge on top of the wood to get lined up for your stroke, the weight of the splitter just start randomly applying horizontal pressure to the contact point, because the wedge rod is just flopping around, and that starts pushing the wood piece around (or knocking it over) before you can even begin your up stroke. If your wood is a full round, this is not going to make any difference, but on subsequent splits, this is not functional. Even on wedged pieces of wood this doesn't work because as you are trying to control the flop it basically pushes 360 degrees around the top of the wood while you are wrestling with it so it naturally is going to find the crack between the two support pieces and push the target wood piece over and out. I've got one of those bolt down, kindling splitter wedges that you bolt to the top of a tree trunk round and I took the same piece of test wood that I had been wrestling with and split it in 2 seconds using that. This time of year I didn't have any full rounds to try it on but I assume it would work for those. That's why I gave it 2 stars instead of one. After you make a couple of splits of that full round is when the full is going to start.

I’m impressed by how usable this is. As soon as I received it, I split some firewood for a bonfire we’re having at the. Each this weekend. It did not disappoint. It’s ruggedly constructed, with plenty of heft to it, while still being a manageable weight. It was easy to use, no real skill required, and much, much safer than swinging a heavy maul. It’s also a bit shorter than my maul when it’s stored in its collapsed position. This isn’t going to do everything you need, you’re no splitting huge, wet, knotty rounds with this, but it’s not intended for that. This is perfect for splitting wood inside without swinging an axe. There’s zero risk of an over strike or glancing blow.

Have always used the traditional axe and wedge on bigger stumps, but this one saved me some time. Design is great and has enough weight in the slide to get a good blow into the wood. Have found that drier logs split so much easier and the larger ones might take an additional couple blows. Does a locking bolt to keep everything compact and in place when not in use. Yellow coating seems durable enough, but the tip has already started to flake off with use as expected. Mine had some grainy sand particles inside of the package, which I’m not sure what it is from. Overall happy with the tool and has definitely saved my back and some additional chopping hours.

Set the wedge end on the wood, slide the weight down with steady force, and it splits smaller rounds cleanly without sending chips flying everywhere. Compared with a hatchet or small splitting maul, this feels more controlled and safer for close-quarter use, especially around a campsite where there may not be much room to swing. It also takes less aim than an axe, which makes it useful for turning larger firewood pieces into kindling for outdoor fireplaces. A manual kindling splitter with a fixed ring can be faster for repetitive small pieces, but this slide hammer style is easier to store, carry, and use on uneven pieces that do not fit neatly into a ring.
