This is the first coil binding machine I've used. I bought it primarily to bind paperback sheet music songbooks so they would lay flat. (After the first bill for $60 at the local office store for binding books, I figured I'd save money in the long run.) I've since found it great for binding cookbooks, as well as art instruction books. The only drawback is that you can't see the name of the book on the shelf after you bind it, but that's a small inconvenience. I also printed and bound class handouts for a local group, and the electric binding with foot control worked really well for the 6mm and 8mm sizes. It sometimes like to catch on the plastic covers so you have to stop and fix it, but for small books it just zips along. However, I don't like too much space between pages when the book is lying open, so I tend to use smaller coils than recommended. I found that as soon as the book gets up to size 13mm or so, I usually have to hand twist it. There's also the issue that many songbooks are 12" high, and this is A4 max (11.7"). So I found that it was best NOT to center the book as you would first assume; if you do, then there is a gap on both ends that is just large enough to make twisting on the coil a little more difficult. So now I use a small unpunched gap at the top (enough to make it easy to add the coil from the top), and then leave a larger gap at the bottom of the page. It might not be obvious, but if you are planning on tearing up paperbacks to coil bind, you will need a good paper cutter. Since I do bookbinding, I have a heavy duty 17" Kutrimmer paper trimmer. I find that once I had a system in place (tear from the back of the book, then use a sharp knife to cut away the glue that stacks up), then trim 5 pages at a time, stack them for binding 5 pages at a time, then everything went smoothly. Be sure to find a rhythm for trimming and binding so you don't accidentally flip pages and punch the wrong side (been there...). For some of the thicker songbooks books (400 pages), I was happy to divide them in half. I found plastic 12x12" sheets too, so can put a plastic cover on Part 2. I also use the first "title page" page of the book as the cover for Part 2, so I can see the title under the plastic. Remember to budget for the coil bindings. I started with 8mm and 13mm. Then needed 6mm. Then 16mm. Now I think I need 10mm... The more you bind the fussier you get that the size is a good fit... I'll have to open a binding store soon...

I looked at MANY options and was hesitant to purchase but glad I did. This is super easy to use and it is heavy duty to last. I do not use the plug in feature and the manual mode is so user friendly. I am sure the electric feature is good also but honestly so easy to use my hand for threading coils.

It's a good machine. So far I have punched holes in just under 5,000 sheets of 32lb glossy paper plus 500 sheets of cover stock, and it has done the job well. The catch tray could be a little deeper for less frequent emptying. The handle could be a little longer or shaped differently to give more leverage, but if it was, I guess that would encourage me to try and punch too much paper at one time.The paper stop guide on the left is a little rough but works good once you get it set. It could use some helper guides on the other side to help square up stacks of paper, but you figure out how to work around it. The roller takes a while to get used to, but once you learn to finess it, then it goes good. I learned to treat the roller like a clutch for a car or motorcycle - instead of just jamming the book against it, you rest it on the metal roller and barely touch one end of the coil to the rubber roller, applying a small amount of force until the coil starts spinning. One reviewer said he wanted a longer roller, but it's not necessary. I could do it with a 1-inch roller. It's better if the far end of the book is actually not touching the rubber - it keeps the coil from getting pulled into the roller. I wish the roller had a speed selector. When you're "in the groove" it doesn't matter, but when starting out on a fresh set of books, I'd like the roller to be moving more slowly so I don't have to be as careful. I bought the unit with the foot pedal, and I rarely use the pedal. It requires me to sit in the right position and discourages moving around. When processing large stacks of punches paper, I need to move around. Overall it's a good machine and it is holding up well. I have needed to re-tighten a few knobs and the set screws that hold the crossbar to the handle worked loose and I needed to add some loctite and screw them back in, but no big deal. The blades still seem sharp, and the machine still seems tight. I wish there were one that could handle more paper at one time, but without making the jump in price to the really big industrial machines.

Quickly creates good looking booklets for client presentations. Booklets lay flat and pages turn easily. Only issue with machine is the motor driven roller used for quickly inserting coil requires the pages to be held in the just right position or the coil will get caught going through some of the holes. It is quick to insert the coil by hand so the motor driven roller can save a little time but isn't necessary.

Does what it says. I've had it a few years now and still pleased with the purchase. Definitely saves money over paying for binding at FedEx and the like. Only con is it is heavy, so put it someplace and let it stay put.

This thing is super sturdy and a great machine to have on hand. However I feel like I could have gone with a cheaper option for myself. I haven't used the part that coils it for you and honestly the direction book was a cardstock paper with like 6-8 pictures for the directions. I'm still exploring the machine as of yet, but other than the price, I have no complaints. I also have nothing to compare it to. I probably should have watched/read some comparison videos/ articles before hand.
