  • A style all of his own
Unfortunately I have also read The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker, which means that there was a sense of repetition over the life of Achilles and what happened at Troy. That said, nobody writes like Stephen Fry, the appendix at the end a massive work in and of itself. He is also generous to the reader, urging you to not become bogged down with these names, which really do form a large chunk of the prose. Admitting honestly that there is a great deal of the unknown, mystery about what happened, it takes a creative mind like his, to bring it all to life. I rather regret visiting the location of it all before reading this. ... show more

  • Fry is a first-class storyteller
I cannot adequately express how much I enjoyed this book. I find the topic fascinating but I believe that anyone would find the material fascinating with Fry's narrative style. The entire trilogy is incredibly good. Absolutely charming!

  • A Stephen Fry Masterpiece
Greek history is complex. Stephen handling of history makes it easy to read and more importantly, enjoyable. Looking forward to Stephens book on the Oddessey. And then the Aeneid.

  • Great read.
Reads like a novel. The writer understands and it’s passionate about Greek mythology. I believe he overdid himself at times, making it a bit confusing to some readers. But overall is exceptional

  • Quite Readable but...
I also read the Illiad by Homer, translated by Lattimore. Much (much) better once you get rhythm of the poetry .

  • The best storytelling
Fry makes these complex stories understandable. Conversational...probably like they were originally told. Gods and Heroes with human frailties make for the most gripping reading.

  • Great series
Enjoyed all the books in this series. The author puts a great spin on these classic tales and I learned a lot.

  • You feel every sorrow and triumph!
So enlightening. Fry tells the stories of the gods and mortals as no one else can, with wit, humor, empathy, and knowledge. I have read the entire trilogy and have learned more than any other book has ever been able to teach me.
