Description

The Triplett CTX690 Network Toner and Probe Kit is designed specifically for locating and tracing cables on inactive or active networks, and live or dead phone lines, as well as coaxial video cabling systems. Today's media networks have a combination of twisted pair data, telephone voice, coax and security/alarm video wiring. The CTX690 provides two selectable powerful Net and Tel tones allowing cable installers and Datacom/Telecom technicians to plug directly into an active network, patch panel, network/telephone wall outlet or live phone line making it easy to quickly isolate the right wire/cable. The toner can generate pulse/warble tones, check continuity/polarity, and provide talk battery power. The probe tests include trace, hub blink, and link mode and has a built-in flashlight. Includes alligator clips, RJ45 and RJ11 connectors, F connector adapter for coax cable, spare tip, and a carrying case.

  • works good
Style: TVR10/100/1000K(CS)
I use this and a Greenlee NETCat Pro NC500 for different situations. This gives a simple and quick to see summary of the wire, is it wired right, is it running at gigabit? The probe works with the NETCat for tracing wires, also. I use the NETCat to check the length for billing and where breaks are. Good wire tester, doesn't show good when it's bad and shows real connection speed (not theoretical). ... show more

  • Excellent

I'd used the previous version of this a LOT at my last job, so when I needed one at my current job, it was the first thing I thought of to buy. Unfortunately, I decided to spend $25 on a cheap one at first - and returned it the same day I got it. Totally didn't work. This one though works great. Unless you want to go way overboard and pick up a Fluke, this is the one you need. ... show more

  • solid product
Style: TVR10/100/1000K(CS)
This replaced a older one that finally failed after 15 years. It's a solid product, intuitive and easy to use. I've used Fluke products and, perhaps due to my limited needs, I prefer this one. I did purchase one that arrived non-functional, and had an easy replacement with this unit. It's solid in testing cables and toning. ... show more

  • Excellent cable tester
Style: TVR10/100/1000K(CS)
We had one before this one and unfortunately dropped it, breaking the tip off the probe. We tried another, more-expensive brand that was supposedly higher quality, but it wasn't nearly as good as this one. Highly recommend this tester for basic cable tracing and testing!

  • Poor Quality!

I got this in March and by July one of the led lights went bad so cant trust the test readings it puts out. Very disappointing!!

  • More than met my needs and expectations
Style: TVR10/100/1000K(CS)
Update - 23, July 2020... Well this was working great, until an RJ45 jack that was labeled as data turned out to be a PBX phone jack. Didn't kill the Byte Brothers out right, but it definitely isn't working as well as it did (still smells like burnt electronics). I can't blame the device for this (I am blaming our cabling vendor) but some kind of over voltage protection would be a welcome addition. Also maybe a headphone jack on the wand considering how low volume the toner is. Still a good purchase, as I haven't found another device with the same features at this price point (although I am current taking suggestions) A previous employer had the 10/100 (without PoE) and it was great, this new version is even better and has more than met my needs and expectations. I only have need of it two or three times week but having the tracer, basic cable testing, and hub/switch detection in one small package is a huge convenience. For larger buildings/networks I do still keep a traditional tone generator in my vehicle, because this one can be on the quiet side and hard to hear in some of the larger server rooms. But this unit is always with me in my carry bag and is perfect for 99% of my regular sites. Not sure if this would satisfy a dedicated cabling tech who might have need of this type of tool multiple times daily, but I could not be happier. ... show more

  • Does not work as advertised
Style: TVR10/100/1000K(CS)
Frankly, my experience with the device makes me wonder if the other reviewers actually own and tried the device. There are three basic things this device is supposed to test for. 1) Cable Tester. Plug one end into the main unit and one into the second unit and the 4 green lights light in sequence if it's wired correctly. The basic functionality does seem to work. If one wire is not terminated the light will not light up. However, the demo video shows that if two pairs are crossed on both ends, it will tell you and this is advertised as a major differentiator for this unit over it's competitors. This does not work. I deliberately mis-wired a patch cable so the brown and white wire goes to the green and white slot and vice versa on both ends. It's supposed to show an error because in this scenario you aren't getting the full benefit of the pairs being twisted, but it does not. 2) If you connect the first port to a switch, hub or PC it tells you what link speeds are being advertised. This does seem to work for the machines, switches and hubs I tried. I tried a Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, a self built linux server, an apple airport extreme and a Cisco SG300-20 managed switch. I did not attempt to set a port on the Cisco router to 100MBPS only to see what the tester would show. By the time I thought of doing this, I had given up on the tester. 3) If you connect one device to port 1 and the second device to port 2, it's supposed to show you the speed negotiated. It does seem to show something but the results are almost always incorrect. When a macbook pro is connected to an airport extreme, it says the possible link speeds are T-10 half and T-1000 full. This is almost impossible since if T-1000 full works T-10 full and T-100 full should also work. If you connect a macbook pro to a Cisco SG300-20 managed switch it says only T-10 half duplex is working even though both the switch and macbook pro tell me they are linked at 1Gig full duplex. I even tried sending data as fast as possible to another machine and the speeds I get are consistent with a gig full duplex link. Even if I change the settings on both the macbook pro and the switch to hard configure the ports to 1Gig full duplex as opposed to auto-negotiate, I get the same result. The functionality that works does seem to work but if I evaluate it on the basis only of the functionality that actually works, devices 1/4 the price do better and don't send you on wild goose chases looking for problems that don't exist in your network. Maybe it's a lemon. I'll update the review if Byte Brothers sends me a replacement that actually works. ... show more
