Description

The Triplett Fox & Hound HotWire (3388) is a live circuit tracing kit for both 120VAC and 220VAC circuits. It includes the versatile Fox HotWire Tone Generator (Toner) and the high-performance Hound HotWire Inductive Amplifier (Probe). The Fox HotWire is powered by a 9-volt battery for low voltage tracing or it can be powered by the high voltage line it is toning. It can generate multiple tones (Pulse or Warble), provides a visual and audible continuity test, and integrates Triplett's own TrueTrace and TripLatch tests while providing overload protection up to 250 VAC. The Hound HotWire is a battery operated handheld lightweight Probe; containing both a thumbwheel sensitivity control and signal strength indicator LED. It has a built-in LED headlight to illuminate dark areas and reduce fluorescent light noise, a bandpass filter to suppress unwanted frequencies, an earphone jack for noisy or quiet work areas, and an easy access battery cover. The HotWire can also trace other powered or unpowered common wires including telephone and cable TV wires, LAN cables, security system wires, and many others. The HotWire Fox also includes a very useful feature called TrueTrace. The HotWire's RF signal can be sensed through both building materials and most metal conduits. The HotWire can even trace shallow (up to 6" deep) underground wires, like those commonly used for 'Invisible Fences', cable television, telephone, or low voltage landscape lighting. Complete with test leads (24" and 60"), flat blades, pointed probes, alligator clips, hard carrying case, and (2) 9V batteries. Founded in 1904, U.S.-based Triplett Test Equipment continues to be on the leading edge of specialized testers. Whether supplying vital test equipment to the U.S. Signal Corps during WWII, or providing the railroad industry with essential testers to ensure the safety of their crews and the public, Triplett prides itself on developing innovative, reliable, and durable test equipment that also won't break the bank. Triplett's catalog contains a wide array of test equipment parts and accessories such as multimeters, voltmeters, cable testers, security cameras and security camera accessories, wire cable mapping kits, video monitors, and other specialty testers. They serve industries such as HVAC, security, electronics and electrical, telecom, and more.

  • Very decent equipment, especially for the price...
Pretty fantastic tester compared to: (a) the price, in view of what my local supply shops were asking for similar Ideal and Fluke products (neither of which could do live circuits), and (b) my network cable tracer, which in the past has worked on AC wiring in a pinch, but doesn't have great range I used this unit to trace a ridiculously long bedroom circuit that had a mystery short. I traced something close to 200' of 15 gauge, including through a section of 18" concrete floor that has a 6-inch topping slab on 2 inches of foam insulation over it, and also through about 50' of 12 inch concrete wall, loaded with double rebar. Steering this probe requires a bit of patience, trial and error, and disconnecting a few junction boxes along the way. There's the potential for bleedover into parallel wires, and the signal will propagate through common neutrals (actually a good thing -- caught a few that shouldn't have been!), but with a little bit of attentive use it becomes pretty easy to figure out good from bad leads. As others have stated, NOT a good circuit breaker finder. It'll do in a pinch, but I recommend spending the few bucks on the dedicated tool if that's what you need. The live wire function works flawlessly, the tone generator is adequately loud and discernible, and I got much more use out of the continuity tester than I imagined, mainly because it was already connected to the wires, vs. disconnecting and clipping up my multimeter. So while this tracer doesn't work miracles and has a bit of a learning curve, it's really great at what it does, especially for the price. Wholehearted recommendation. ... show more

  • Great product
My husband loves it. The price is as expected or less than average. The quality is great. It does everything it's suppose to do.

  • Works as advertised. Great value compared to others.
This product is easy to use and works exactly as intended. In other reviews it does mention that it picks up a lot of crosstalk and it can be hard to trace through existing power wires or other interference. And yes that is the case but it's no different than any other tracer I've ever used. Maybe I've just used cheap ones but it was not unexpected for me. It was very helpful and tracing wires through my walls in my new house to find out how everything was run. ... show more

  • Underwhelming at first, now it rocks my world.
When I first got this I was a bit underwhelmed by it. It seemed to bleed into other circuits and it confused me. My first impression was walking around a basement with a bad AM radio. However, I figured out that this thing absolutely rocks. After I tweaked the RF level on the sending unit once and it was good to go and haven't changed it since. I am using this every other week or so to trace wires both live and dead. I've used it to trace wire through non-metal conduit buried 8-12" underground. I've used it to chase crazy grounds that have broken continuity. I've traced through walls both new and old--and it's highly accurate in determining position. I have extremely high confidence that I can trace virtually any wire with this. I think this is the most useful, time-saving tool in my kit at this point. One caveat: this device is not useful for tracing to a a circuit breaker. Use a (much cheaper) breaker finder for that purpose. If you are tracing to a circuit breaker that is on, the RF will just bleed into all other circuits, which is exactly that this was designed to do. ... show more

  • Great. But Read the Instructions well.
1. You need two 9-volt batteries. 2. Pay attention to the lock button (see instructions) 3. Practice using the Fox and Hound in all of the possible configurations on known circuits. It will save you time when you can't see any cables. Unlike so many other testers, the flexible design of the Triplet Fox and Hound means you have to know the nuances in order to get the most out of it. I first saw a Fox and Hound used around 1960 to trace underground wires and pipes. I was fascinated, but I can remember the electricians and plumbers talking about how proud Triplet was of their tool. Also, only one of them knew how to use it. The others were clueless. It is still well made, and I expect years of service. Read the instructions--the operating instructions. The way RF works will surprise you even if you are a HAM. I had cables from two circuits running very neatly next to each other for about 7 feet, and the RF propagated from the circuit under test to the second circuit. Since it was all in the wall, it caused some confusion in the attic when I started looking down a cable that I was certain was a different circuit. Also, a magnetic contactless charging unit was plugged in to the circuit under test, and It put a signal on the cable for some distance back that completely obliterated the warble. Finding and unplugging it resolved the problem. There are also hints in the operations instructions about how to ground the tester for underground RF detection. Save yourself some time and read the instructions first. Also there are different testing modes, and the section on "finding the NULL" is highly useful. Lastly, on the Hot-Wire version of the Fox, note that the selector switch locks in the "OFF - Continuity" position and to move it one must press the tiny red button just above the switch to move it. I love this system. Just stay calm and think about what it is doing, then read the instructions again. ... show more
