  • My favorite switch design(*)
I gambled on a few boxes of these at a deep discount when they came out. But I hesitated to install them after I saw the plastic flange. Then I saw some unfavorable reviews. I just KNEW these were going to fail. In a pinch, I finally installed one. And I regret my initial judgment. They're not deep, so I didn't need to use the screws to pull it into the box. So, the flanges should live forever. Divorcing the power switch from the adjustment switches the way TreatLife did is genius. I get it that the lighting industry keeps the simple rocker because it feels familiar, and that most people are afraid of change. But a simple rocker just isn't adequate for adjusting output. I spend way too much time trying to reduce light to the minimum output without inadvertently turning the light off altogether. But these have a power switch, a low adjustment, and a high adjustment. It took a day or two for the critter who shares my house to get used to punching the main power button to turn them on (it's at the bottom, where the "off" side of a conventional switch is). But she picked it up quickly. These avoid that in at least two ways. The adjuster switches offer a number of output options that let the lamp get pretty dim. The app takes it one step further by offering a minimum threshold setting and three output modes to match various lamp designs. These switches get my lamps dimmer than any of my other switches, hands down. And the modes can eliminate flicker in some of the more finicky lamps. I tested an older compact fluorescent bulb on one. It wouldn't start in the lowest setting, but after warming up I could get it to go way dimmer than I could get that bulb to go with any other switch. The app is simple but effective. As mentioned, it offers minimum threshold settings and three modes of operation. But you can also turn off the night light that illuminates the power button when the switch is off. So far, the only thing that keeps them from perfection is no Z-Wave or Zigbee compatibility. Being WiFi only, they're limited by your router's range (the switches don't double as repeaters as they do in other protocols). Our house is small (1,300sf on two levels) with a low-tech mesh router, and the ones in the farthest corner of the house are a little slow to react and can sometimes fail to respond to hub commands. Being WiFi only, they don't offer acknowledgements to the hub to confirm the switch's mode. So, the hub doesn't know to resend the signal if the switch doesn't respond to commands. But that's a rare issue. A good mesh network should solve most of those problems. The ones closer to the primary router don't seem to suffer the latency and response failures. These are the ticket for those who don't want to invest in a hub that speaks Z-Wave or Zigbee. Even though we have a Z router, we still mix these WiFi switches with Z-Wave devices. And they work just fine. You just have to set them up in Alexa or Google Home before linking them to another router. I gave them four stars but I will also buy these again. They work really well and you can't beat the price. ... show more

  • Connects, Works, What more can you ask for?
Purchased based upon looks, price and interoperability with my existing devices (Smart Life app). I was not disappointed. Received as promised and took about an hour to do the full install and connect to the app plus Alexa integration. I use it to control my back porch string LED lights. The switch is located inside the house by the rear door and replaces the existing standard toggle switch. Here's my advice on the install; Read the product details, you do need a neutral line (white wire) for this to operate. I've read reviews that state the unit is too deep in the installation box - i did not find this to be the case here. The depth of the unit is no different than any similar smart unit device (and i have many in the house from different brands). Instructions and clear and surprisingly in full English with color diagrams to match if you are unsure (i am an Electronics Engineer and come across many poorly translated user/install guides - this one is precise). The unit (dimmer switch) comes with a standard single gang wall plate attached - my installation was into a double gang and so i simply purchased a new wall plate and detached the unit from the provided single wall plate and it fits as intended into the double gang plate. There are retainer clips on the rear (plastic) - you simply ease them open and the unit detaches from the provided wall plate. Wiring is extremely simple - the user guide even shows you how to search out your existing toggle switch to determine which is your line and which is your load wires. The product also comes with pre-printed labels that you peel off and stick to the existing load/line conductors in the wall, to be foolproof if you are a novice. Labels are also provided if you need to identify your Neutral and Ground wires but these are self-explanatory by color. Of course, labeling is optional but good practice! The unit itself is clearly marked on the rear for all four connections (Load, Line, Neutral and Ground and also by standard colors). Upon power-up the unit has a backlit LED circle on the rocker switch. When operated there is a horizontal row of small white LED's at the top to show the dimming percentage (10-100%) approximately. Connecting to the wifi was simple and occurred first time for me (unlike other brands!). Make sure your mobile phone is on a 2.4GHz network if you have Dual bands in your home (2.4 / 5 GHz) in order to complete the setup. Then simply add the device per the app instructions...(interestingly, while my Smart Life app was scanning for the device, Alexa found it first and told me it was available!). Now i can operate and dim the lights by voice command and set timers and schedule from the app etc. All in all i'm very pleased with the purchase so much so that it's making me think about other lights in my home that i have yet to change out to the smart dimmers. ... show more

  • good looking but interfering if you install 2 or more
I installed about 10 of them in the house. Generally when installed as singles they work great. When I installed 2 or 3 in the same box they started interfering with each other. I would turn one light which would turn on lights on another of these switches located in the same box. it makes little sense since the second switch would be showing off. I think they are either interfering with each other's wireless or this is caused due to more than one switches being powered from the same circuit. I think it is just a bad circuit design as it occurred on at least 3 of them. otherwise when i have a single of these switches they work great. ... show more
