I will preface this by saying that this is the third laser that I have constructed and tested. I still do not consider my self an expert by any means. I'm simply a weekend woodworker who loves to dabble in the lasers. At a $250 price tag, this machine does look very enticing to any newer woodworker looking to get into lasers. This laser has a work surface of 400mm x 420mm, which roughly translates to 15¾" x 16.5". The laser head on this machine has a 5 watt power output. The manufacturer says that it can cut up to 6 mm thick bass wood. I will talk about it's cutting capacities and graving in the next portion of my review. I will start off by talking about the construction process. Out of the three lasers that I have constructed and reviewed, this one probably took the longest, and had the most frustrating moments. I would say in all it took me about an hour and 15 minutes to get this laser up and running. It is a simple construction process, but there are a few steps which are frustrating. The other two lasers that I have constructed had a sliding mechanism for installing the laser head, which was literally a one minute install. This laser by comparison, requires you to screw in four very small screws to mount the laser head to the axis. This is a process that is definitely meant for very small hands, and you may end up dropping screws 10 times. One positive I will say about this laser as compared to the other two that I have reviewed is, It actually comes with a full instruction booklet. Other lasers in this price range require you to scan a QR code to watch videos online for instruction. I found the instructions relatively easy to follow. Overall I would say that the construction on this laser, is in the category of decent. I used the free software Laser GRBL to test out this laser. I like Laser GRBL, because it is very simple to use. You can also use Light Burn with this laser, but that requires a paid subscription, and has a steeper learning curve. There are a ton of videos on YouTube for getting started with Laser GRBL. The laser performed exactly as expected with Laser GRBL. I had no problem centering the laser, and creating a frame of my image. I first tried out engraving a simple heart on one of the wooden blanks included. That performed as expected, so I went on and tested burning a photograph into the same wooden blank. This laser does a decent job at engraving photographs. The image was still kind of grainy as compared to more expensive lasers, but overall satisfactory. This laser also advertises that it can cut through wood that is up to 6 mm in depth. I attempted to cut a simple heart using one of the plywood blanks the manufacturer included. When I measured the blank with a caliper it was right around 2.7 mm in depth. With a speed of 100, and max power, the laser was able to cut the simple heart within one minute. There was some charring on the top and underneath the heart, but that is expected with any laser that is not hooked up to air assist. This laser is not pre-equipted to accept air assist, but I'm sure with some modifications it could be achieved. I also attempted to engrave into one of the stainless steel blanks that were included with the laser. The laser was able to produce a faint heart, on the surface of the stainless steel blank. It was faint enough that I was not able to feel any actual engraving, when rubbing my finger over it. It was more like a permanent discoloration of the stainless steel. This test gave me hope that with some further experimentation, the laser might actually do a decent job engraving metals. Overall, I am impressed with how well this laser functioned, especially for its rather inexpensive price tag. This laser would be great for any person who is just starting out with lasers. It does a perfect job engraving, and can cut through thinner pieces of plywood. While the construction took a bit longer than other lasers that I have used, it was still in no way difficult. I finally just bunkered down and figured out how to use the software. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it was going to be! I plan on using this machine for metal and jewlery so it's very important to remember to coat anything shiny with permanent marker. The machine moves smoothly and fairly quietly. The machine arrives in a box as a kit for you to assemble. Assembly was fairly straight forward and inline with what I've come to expect after putting together a few other laser engraver machines. The instructions are easy to follow as well. Performance is good, especially given the price. The frame is all metal and sturdy. The 5w laser diode is great for things like engraving wood. This is a perfectly acceptable starter machine that provides nice results.
