  • Works amazing, but the motorized option might be overkill for most users.
The Tilta Mirage Motorized VND Kit is a mostly well designed matte box package aimed at indie film makers and content creators. It comes in 3 kits with different components included. I’ll be reviewing the full kit with matte box, variable ND filter, and the wireless VND motor. The matte box has great build quality. It’ s very light but feels well constructed and has a professional look. The tray for holding a 4”x4.6” filter has a soft backing that makes me confident that filters won’t get damaged when adding and removing them. The whole thing is modular and can be stripped down to just the 95mm filter tray. It would be nice to have 2 circular filter trays out of the box. Tilta sells a tray that allows for this but I’ve seen complaints about vignetting on lenses any wider that 24mm which is a real shame. Overall the matte box is very nice and I would recommend it. The variable ND filter is OK. The wheel on top to adjust the exposure is much better than having to grip the whole outside of the filter to rotate it. You’re going to experience the same problems with this VND as you would on any other brand. At max stop of ND there is some cross pattern shadowing. It’s not as bad as some other filters I’ve seen but it’s there. The filter has a green/warm tint that stays consistent through the range. Overall the variable ND is decent and should get the job done as long as you avoid max ND on wider lenses. The wireless motor is the most interesting and most flawed part of the package. I’m not sure who this is for outside of rigs where the camera isn’t accessible to adjust the ND by hand. Charging batteries, calibrating motors, and dealing with technical issues is a lot of work to go through to avoid reaching over to the lens and using a finger to adjust the ND. The one use I see this working for is when shooting a scene with exposure changes in the shot. In that case this is a great way to keep exposure balanced without changing depth of field. The wireless motor will be an expensive luxury for most people but if you need to be able to adjust exposure remotely there’s nothing like it on the market. The Tilta Mirage Motorized VND Kit has great build quality and I can highly recommend the matte box. The VND is very functional and works great with some issues popping up at the far end of the ND range. The wireless motor is a niche piece of kit that I believe most users would regret spending an extra $130 on. ... show more

  • Life Saver! If you are a BMPCC6K Owner
I was able to dial in my exposure every time for every shot in only a few seconds with this device. The histogram confirmed that images were in the range that I wanted...which were projected on my Ninja Inferno for confidence purposes. Make sure to buy the wireless motor. I never thought that I would need it, but it sped up the entire process of setting up shots and saved me valuable time. I did not even have to touch my rig once. GAME CHANGER! ... show more

  • Nice idea. Poor design
Is a great idea with very poor thinking. Is stackable? Yes, but with 4x5.6 you can’t use the flag. With the variable ND, you cannot use another round filter in spite of you bought another slot. The battery compartiment is VERY wrongly placed. It doesn’t allow to introduce the circular tray. Even if you unsamble the mattebox, will be impossible to put because it’s design. Tilta, you have to test with REAL users before releasing a product on the market. ... show more

  • I was sent Wrong Model
My review is about the seller, Tilta, and not the product...the product is great and it you have a FX3, I recommend it...but I ordered and paid for the more expensive model MB-T16-B which is the motorized version...but I received the less expensive MB-T16-A which is the non-motorized version. Several attempts to contact the seller via Amazon and the Tilta support page on their website have gone unanswered. I can't return it from Thailand because the Carriers (UPS and the like) require payment at the time of drop off or real prepaid label. They don't honor the Amazon return slip that comes with the order....so I am stuck with it as is I guess. ... show more

  • Now my favorite matte box
People throw around the term game changer a bit too much but in my opinion this one truly qualifies for that moniker. It has completely changes the way I shoot and it all starts with the motorized ND. Installing everything can be a bit tricky but ones you do it a couple times it becomes second nature. The wheel on the controller is well dampened and just feel amazing when using. Everything is super smoother and quiet. The quality of the variable ND is quite good. I would put it up there with the more expensive NDs on the market. Lets be honest here, yes matte boxes are very useful things to have but a big selling point of these things are how professional they look on your setup in front of clients. With that in mind, this may be THE best looking matte box on the market at just about any price. If you want to impress, then this is the matte box for you. These new 95mm filters are incredible. The quality is VERY good! The mist filters can be a bit strong so I would probably stick with the 1/8th strength unless you are going for a really dreamy look. I LOVE that I can now buy filters for my cine setup at a little less that $70 a piece. Of course if you still use the larger 4x5.65 filters you can get an inexpensive filter holder from Tilta so you won't have to get rid of your old filters. Everything comes in a great case. Inside the case there is another filter case to store your 95mm filters. Everything you could need included a rail mount and even the battery for the motor is included. I can't recommend this matte box highly enough if for no other reason that it has saved my time in my work flow and that is one of the most important things any piece of gear can do for me. ... show more

  • NATO RAIL CLAMP ISSUES
NATO RAIL ISSUES - TILTA MIRAGE I recently purchased a Tilta Mirage. The Nato rail adaptor on the hand wheel doesn't clamp on to any of the standard NATO rails I own (small rig, DJI, Shape, etc), including the NATO rail on the DJI RS2, probably one of the most common uses for it. Is this common? Can the clamp be adjusted? Does anyone have a fix? Until I hear back from TILTA with a solution, this review will remain low. ... show more
