I had to cook and serve breakfast for 35 people on a Coleman camp stove outside. I knew I was going to have trouble keeping the cooked food hot while I cooked enough for 35 people to go through the line. So, I ordered this chafer. It did the job magnificently. I went ahead and ordered the 6-pk of Sterno and the 2 1/2 inch divider pan with my original order. I heated water to the boiling point and added it to the chafer (approximately 1.25 gal.) and lit two sternos just as I began cooking on the Coleman stove. The chafer stayed so warm I soon extinguished one of the sternos. One kept the water and chafer plenty hot to keep the cooked food warm. The equipment itself looks very classy, is solid and sturdy, simple to assemble, wash, and figure out. By the way, I bought this Sterlite trunk http://www.amazon.com/STERILITE-18426402-Sterilite-Storage-Footlocker/dp/B001ELIEU2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1445661166&sr=8-1&keywords=sterlite+trunk to store the chafer in and it fits perfectly.     • Very nice for the price
I've go to admit, I have quite the collection of chafing dishes. Several models and sizes, do the amount of entertaining we do. I have some that cost a few hundred dollars, and I also purchased 2 of these at what I consider to be a very reasonable price. These chafer's function just as well as my very expensive chafer's. However, at a fraction of the cost. These chafer's will also accommodate all the optional chafing insert pans that my expensive chafer's use as well. So, these are very versatile depending on your food serving needs. I noticed a comment regarding the proper water level to use, and maintain. Usually 3" of water is enough to maintain a consistent hot/safe food serving temperature, for about 4 to 4.5 hours of in use time. Its best to very HOT tap water when filling your chafer, as it takes less time and fuel/sterno to heat up the unit. Once the water and food items are HOT. I usually run the unit with only one sterno/fuel cell (centered). And this not only reduces excess steam, but also allows the unit to warm food longer, about 6 hours. Without the need to add additional water. It can be a bit of a task, if you need to add water, especially if the food trays still have food in them. I use my chafer's for entertaining indoors as well as outdoors. Once you start using chafer's, you're going to find, you have a lot more time to spend with your guests. Great price, great product.     • Basic, Functinal, Econmmical and No Complaints
I catered my own wedding (I know crazy but I have champagne tastes on a beer budget and thankfully a knack for the kitchen that or friends who lie really well). After looking at renting chafing dishes I was amazed at how expensive they were. I wanted something nice but I didn't need the deluxe roll top with gold accent chafing dishes. I also didn't want the tacky disposable foil ones, so this fit the bill. They have both a black handle and stainless steel handle so you can choose your look. Since the wedding we have used them for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and a bunch of family gatherings in between. So far not a single problem. Their are prettier chafing dishes, but honestly these do the job and as long as they aren't the disposable foil ones I don't think anyone though that I skimped on my food service ware. I have also bought the half size pans to go in the chafing dishes which gives a lot more options such as having stuffing and mashed potatoes sharing space in one chafing dish. These chafing dishes only come with the full size inserts so you would want to purchase those separately if you want that versatility. ... show more

    • Not perfect, but an excellent value for what it is... a utilitarian steam warmer.
Positives: adequately strong and nicely constructed. Finish was good... uniform satin with no blems. Metal gauge of legs, water and food containers was good... not too lite nor too heavy. Sterno holders were right size and did a good job keeping food warm. Lid fit fine. Plastic handle is OK for gentle use, and a good size. Negatives: * There is no mark on the water pan showing how much water to add. * We gave up on the tiny lid holders on the rear legs. When cold the holders didn't fit the lid at all; I bent them open with pliers so they would. However when the unit was hot the lid still didn't fit else isn't the right size; the first time we tried it the lid fell off during service and made a racket and a mess of the table. This is clearly a poor design. We won't use the lid holders. * The plastic handle is rather delicate, but is the right size and insulated. There was a metal handle included (apparently a drawer handle) that I would say is too small... it wouldn't fit a napkin wrap like you'd want for a hot metal handle. This might take a standard drawer handle with more depth. ... show more

I ordered three of these chafing dishes for the first holiday I hosted for my new husband's family. They worked perfectly!! I considered buying the more expensive ones offered, but decided that this type would be sufficient. I'm very happy to have gone in this direction. I got three of these for the price of one of the "restaurant quality" ones, and, in hindsight, feel the more expensive one would have been way to opulent for a family function in my home. I also ordered two of the Stainless Steel Divided Full-Size Steam Table Pans - 2-1/2" Deep, which gave me the option to have two different kind of food items in two of my chafing dishes. You could also buy the disposable ones from the grocery store, but having the permanent ones made it nice!. The dishes allow for either warm or cold food . . . just put ice in the lower pan!! I will be using these every chance I get!! ... show more

    • Extra mirror finish handle was a hit! Great product!
I had a really hard time choosing which chafin was the best choice, I wanted to buy at other seller that gave me the option to pay with amazon payments, for some reason, it was not able to get the payment, so very disappointed I had to choose this one that was on my budget since I didn't like the black hande, I wanted something to look more fancy. At the end, i read some reviews saying the ones without the black plastic handle could mean trouble since they might get warm. So i was a little more happy with the purchase. Once i got them, to my surprise, i can say that the choice i made was the best! amazon gave me super fast shipping, and to my surprise item had an extra handle with mirror finish (not sure if its stainless steel, yet it could give a better look. I think seller should take this in count, this extra handle option is a hit, that will convince more buyers. These are long lasting products, i used to rent them, and worked great. I order several of the Winware 8 Qt Stainless Steel Chafers for a Christmas party that I catered. At first I wondered about the quality of the chafers since they were on the lower end, but was thrilled when I received them to see that they are indeed heavy duty, full size, and more than adequate for any catering event. All of the pieces were in tact and I did switch out the black plastic handles for the stainless steel handles. My only comment would be that it would be wonderful if the stainless steel handles were larger, however, if you decide to use the black plastic handles you will not be disappointed. Chafers are the only way to go when catering or hosting an event, as you are far too busy taking care of other guests needs then to monitor the temperature of the food. The clean up was a breeze and the price couldn't be better. ... show more

I bought both the traditional lidded Winware chafer (this item) and Winware's rolltop chafer. I was hoping the traditional chafer would meet my needs because it is about $100 cheaper, but alas, it looked and felt $100 cheaper. This traditional chafer is OK in its style and function, but is only suitable for casual parties and family get-togethers, in my opinion. The finish is not as shiny as the official image would suggest. Mine came with a fairly matte steel finish (like a steel refrigerator). The particular chafer I received had a significant quarter-sized mar in the finish that would be obvious to anyone using the chafer, so if you buy this be sure to check it carefully when it arrives. The rolltop is much, much more elegant with an awesome mirror finish, solid (heavy) construction, smooth rolling lid (so guests can open lid and serve themselves with one hand while holding a plate), and a large smooth handle that you could wrap a party-themed cloth around (like restaurants do). If you're getting a chafer for a casual Superbowl party or teen event, this traditional chafer would be just fine. I have not yet used either one so I have no opinion as to warming level, but I will update this if I encounter any problems with the rolltop. Also, I can't comment on whether the finishes hold up over time. I will be keeping the rolltop as we sometimes host fairly elegant parties and I think the rolltop will make the serving area "pop" due to its high quality and mirror finish. ... show more
