  • Not perfect, but an excellent value for what it is... a utilitarian steam warmer.
Size: 8 quart
Positives: adequately strong and nicely constructed. Finish was good... uniform satin with no blems. Metal gauge of legs, water and food containers was good... not too lite nor too heavy. Sterno holders were right size and did a good job keeping food warm. Lid fit fine. Plastic handle is OK for gentle use, and a good size. Negatives: * There is no mark on the water pan showing how much water to add. * We gave up on the tiny lid holders on the rear legs. When cold the holders didn't fit the lid at all; I bent them open with pliers so they would. However when the unit was hot the lid still didn't fit else isn't the right size; the first time we tried it the lid fell off during service and made a racket and a mess of the table. This is clearly a poor design. We won't use the lid holders. * The plastic handle is rather delicate, but is the right size and insulated. There was a metal handle included (apparently a drawer handle) that I would say is too small... it wouldn't fit a napkin wrap like you'd want for a hot metal handle. This might take a standard drawer handle with more depth. ... show more

  • Very good value, better than expected
Size: 8 quart
We ordered two of these for a gathering with the requirement of keeping brisket and wings warm for a couple of hours. We used the full size sterno cans (each setup holds two). These were easy to assemble, and as others have pointed out in their reviews it is almost mandatory to swap for the silver/chrome handles. The large black handles are pretty awful aesthetically. However after firing up the sterno I think the black handles would have been better to protect against the heat transfer. We had to wrap cloth dinner napkins around the handles to abate the heat transfer to our guests' paws. We quickly learned that we did not need both sterno cans going at the same time as this tends to boil the water in the lower pan. We shut one off (easily done by sliding the attached cover over the flame...a great feature) and partially covered the remaining can's flame with the aforementioned cover. The dishes are presentable and will probably hold up well. They do not have a captured lid so be sure to leave space for the guests to place it down on the table. At 38 bucks I cant really dont want to complain about it at all. Cleanup was easy and storage is as expected (does not collapse down/ fold) but again...no complaints! If these were 50 I would drop it to 4 stars, but at this price these really cant be beat for casual use. ... show more

  • Works nicely but sharp edges and Inconsistent quality
Size: 8 quart
Bought two of these chafers from the same seller Cooking Depot. They were both fulfilled by Amazon. Both had very sharp edges. Be careful when handling. Both did the job of keeping the food hot. Definitely a good value. Neither came with fuel. Bought Bakers & Chefs Daily Chef Safe Heat which worked great! One came in a box with a red strip on the bottom - This one had a cover that could easily slide off the water pan base. It also had a ding on one of the corners of the water pan. In addition the sterno holder cover had a nice ding. I straightened most of it by hand. The uploaded pics shows the sterno holder after I straightened it out some. It was much worse when I got it. I am returning this chafer for a refund. The second chafer came in a box that did not have the red strip at the bottom - This one had a cover that fit the water pan nicely because the pan had a ridge and the cover had a lip that secured them together (like a cover on a pot). This chafer was also free of dings. I will keep this one. As far as the inconsistent quality - I think Winware sources out dozens of factories throughout the world; each with their own slight design variations and quality standards. So it is a hit or miss which one you will receive ? I plan to order another chafer because I need two. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will get another good one. ... show more

  • Casual chafer
Size: 8 quart
I bought both the traditional lidded Winware chafer (this item) and Winware's rolltop chafer. I was hoping the traditional chafer would meet my needs because it is about $100 cheaper, but alas, it looked and felt $100 cheaper. This traditional chafer is OK in its style and function, but is only suitable for casual parties and family get-togethers, in my opinion. The finish is not as shiny as the official image would suggest. Mine came with a fairly matte steel finish (like a steel refrigerator). The particular chafer I received had a significant quarter-sized mar in the finish that would be obvious to anyone using the chafer, so if you buy this be sure to check it carefully when it arrives. The rolltop is much, much more elegant with an awesome mirror finish, solid (heavy) construction, smooth rolling lid (so guests can open lid and serve themselves with one hand while holding a plate), and a large smooth handle that you could wrap a party-themed cloth around (like restaurants do). If you're getting a chafer for a casual Superbowl party or teen event, this traditional chafer would be just fine. I have not yet used either one so I have no opinion as to warming level, but I will update this if I encounter any problems with the rolltop. Also, I can't comment on whether the finishes hold up over time. I will be keeping the rolltop as we sometimes host fairly elegant parties and I think the rolltop will make the serving area "pop" due to its high quality and mirror finish. ... show more
