The package says "THE WORLD'S BEST PENCIL" in big, bold, confident letters. Not "one of the best." Not "a pretty good pencil." THE WORLD'S BEST. That's the kind of claim you'd expect from a boxer at a weigh-in, not a stick of wood with graphite in it. I had to find out if it was true. So I bought 72 of them. Seventy-two. That's not a pencil purchase. That's an arsenal. When they arrived, the delivery driver handed me the box, saluted, and said, "Godspeed, soldier." Here's something they don't teach you: Ticonderoga is named after a real fort. An actual Revolutionary War fort. I didn't know this when I bought them. I found out on day two, when I woke up to find a small colonial militia camped in my backyard. They wore tricorn hats. They had a fife. They said the pencils had "summoned them" and asked where the British were. I told them I live in Virginia Beach. They seemed disappointed but stayed anyway. They're very polite. They help me rake leaves. One of them keeps asking what a "Wi-Fi" is. These are #2 HB Soft pencils, which means they are the exact pencil every American has used for every important test of their life. The SAT. The state standardized exam. The driver's permit test. The moment I held one, I had a full-body flashback: the fluorescent lights, the proctor saying "You may now open your test booklets," the sound of a hundred kids nervously filling in bubbles. I panicked and filled in a bubble on my electric bill. It was accepted. My payment went through. I got a 1,480 on my grocery list. The yellow paint, the green-and-yellow metal band, and the pink eraser form a color combination so iconic that it's basically the American flag of office supplies. I held one up to the light and the Pledge of Allegiance started playing somewhere in the distance. And the eraser actually erases cleanly, which I didn't think was legally possible. For decades, pencil erasers across this nation have been smearing mistakes into gray tornadoes of shame and ripping holes in homework. Not this one. I erased a typo from my resume and it also removed a gap in my employment history. I have a job interview Tuesday. Things got intense when I brought them to the office. A coworker named Doug uses mechanical pencils. Doug has been clicking that little button in meetings for four years. I placed one freshly sharpened Ticonderoga on the conference table. Doug stopped clicking. We made eye contact. He knew. The room knew. A guy from accounting quietly whispered, "I heard a man once took out three guys in a bar with one of these." That's fiction. It's from a movie. But nobody in accounting knows that. Doug surrendered his mechanical pencil on the spot. I keep it in a jar on my desk like a war trophy. Side effects may include: An instinctive urge to tuck a pencil behind your ear and start "measuring twice, cutting once" Chewing on the end during tough decisions until it looks like a beaver was involved Throwing pencils at the ceiling tiles to see if they stick (they do, and now there are 14 up there) Hearing a British cannon every time someone says "pen" The overwhelming smell of freshly sharpened cedar giving you back-to-school anxiety in October One minor complaint: 72 pencils seemed like a lot until the colonial militia started "borrowing" them. They use them to write letters to their families. The letters are addressed to 1776. I don't know how they're mailing them. But the post office keeps delivering replies, and yesterday one of the soldiers got a care package with a loaf of bread and a note that said, "Hold the fort." They look at me for guidance. I don't know what fort. But I have 58 pencils left, and I will hold it. Sworn Testimony: I, the undersigned, do solemnly affirm that this is, in fact, the World's Best Pencil. Could not understand why schools always wanted Ticonderoga pencils when there are so many other brands available. Talked to my sister, who is a teacher, and she said it was because they are the best. Other brands the lead falls out when sharpened and they don’t last. Now I know.
