  • Works excellent
This auger works great! I purchased it to make holes in a field for pole beans. We use smaller 2x2 posts, so this worked just right. I used a Ryobi one plus 1/2” cordless drill on the low setting, and it worked fantastic.

I got this to assist with a few hundred trees getting planted for arbor day as the last unit wasn't working great. It is a well built solid auger unit. Very sturdy and nice auger spirals that should move the soil out for the seedlings. The drive end is a welded hex to allow for the drill unit to get a good grip on the drive shaft. The tip is a solid drill point that should work well to get it going. Looking forward to digging some holes. update 04/29 used it to dig seedling holes and it worked wonderfully. Attached a cordless drill to the unit and it held firm in the rough ground. We hit a number of rocks and roots digging and it didn't bother the auger but the full torque stop of the driver would pull it from your grip so you had to hold tight. The length of the shaft worked well to make digging repeated holes easy from waist height as deep as you needed to drill. I'll need to get some updated photos after use as it held up very well. I'm expecting to get many years of service from this one. It was by far the popular auger for planting that day. ... show more

  • Works well in soil that does not contain rocks. Worth the price. Need a good drill.
This auger worked better than I expected. I used a regular 1/2-inch Dewalt electric drill with it. This drill was powerful enough to dig a hole the entire 32-inch depth in packed earth that did not contain any rocks. When I dug another hole, it hit a rock about a foot down and would not go any further. This is a light-duty auger that will not cut through or displace rocks. It just stops. However I expected this, especially since I'm using just a 1/2-inch hand drill. I would not attempt to use this with a cordless drill or with a 3/8-inch corded drill. I'd say 1/2-inch corded is the minimum, unless you have soft dirt and don't plan to drill deep. This auger bit is strong enough to drill into most earth that is free of rocks, limited mostly by the power of your drill rather than by the strength of this bit. It drills quickly into the ground and self-feeds. Be careful you don't burn out your drill, because this will put a lot of strain on any normal hand drill. I doubt a normal drill can handle an entire day of drill holes with this without burning out. The bigger and more powerful the drill, the better. It's drills only 3-1/2-inch holes, but I was able to fit a 4-inch diameter post into one of the holes I dug by rocking the bit back and forth in different directions to enlarge the hole, after first clearing it of dirt from the initial drilling. I used it for "planting" wooden posts, not for planting plants. Good purchase that is worth the price. ... show more

  • Digs easily though tough, packed soil
I live in arid, southern California, which has notoriously tough soil. It easily digs down, making quick work of digging a two-foot deep whole, about 4 inches in diameter. I just used this to plant a deep root feeding tube in our backyard. This has taken me 10-20 minutes in the past, since our soil is so hard. However, I used this auger and a hand drill to dig a hole in only 2-3 minutes. It dug easily in rocky soil, with only a little bit of paint removal to show for wear. The build quality seems to be good, and it lasted through a tough dig already. ... show more

  • Made to Dig
This auger is solid; it’s very well designed for homeowners and light commercial work. Everything about it has a reason, from the bright orange coating, which makes it rust-free and easy to see, to the length and the non-sharp edges of the twist and the tang that can fit into an ordinary drill. This auger will definitely save you time and energy without causing blisters. It’s very functional; I used another auger that I have for work when we have to bury conduit or UF cable, but it’s not as beefy as this one, and I can’t wait to use this one. When it comes to owning tools that make things so much easier and more efficient—especially when physical labor is involved—cost is really not a major concern, and this is a good example. ... show more

  • Shaft bent
Tool worked fine for three holes, fourth hole it caught a small rock and bent the shaft, wobbles uncontrollably now.

  • Better than expected
This is handy for planting small plants or new growth in the yard. It has a really nice painted finish, and is made well. There's nothing about it that causes me any concern or to question its quality. It has a 3/8" hex shank so you can use it with lots of different tools, though I'd recommend one that has some power. You'd think that it weighs a lot, and while I didn't weigh it because I didn't have a scale, I'd guess it probably weighs about 3 pounds. Overall, a pretty useful, quality tool for the yard or garden. I'm happy with it. ... show more
