  • Solid quality, minor issues, break-in update Solid quality, minor issues, break-in update
Size: 9 Color: Black
I wear a US Men's 9 in all shoes and when I tried these Thorogood black moc toes on, they were the right size, no issues. The 9 1/2 was way too long in the toe, so I ordered the black 9's. They arrived VERY stiff, so I rubbed 3 coats of Bick 4 Leather Conditioner into the boots and wore them around the house. The conditioner can be rubbed in with a finger, wait till dry, then buff off with a soft cloth, but it absorbed quite a bit to help soften the leather. Build quality is incredible, as these are my first USA-made work boots, but I did notice some minor sole burrs left by the sanding that I had to pick off by hand, but no big deal. Break-in is going well in day 2, but I am noticing, like other reviewers, that the stitch between the bottom two eyelets, and the bottom eyelet, is pretty harsh on the top of my foot, but seems to be slowly relaxing with wear. Overall, I'm really impressed with the quality and I'll update again after break-in. My break-in period will be two weeks, particularly focusing on that bottom eyelet and heavy stitching in that area. Around the house wear using two pairs of thick trail socks and more conditioner and I’ll give an update. Break-in Update after Two Weeks: Two weeks of wearing the boots around the house over two thick pairs of trail socks and 5 coats of Bick 4 leather conditioner and I can say that the initial toe knuckle-crushing pain of the bottom eyelets and stitches has subsided into a minor annoyance over a single pair of thick trail socks now. I'm confident I can wear them out to the grocery store or mall and not constantly be focusing on foot pain. The bottom eyelet area pressure is still there, but the rest of the boot is fitting like a glove and I'll probably start wearing them outside now. I'd say that if you're in the same boat as I am with the initial crushing pressure of that bottom eyelet and thick-stitched area, you may want to consider the wide version of the boot, or dedicate yourself to the break-in period with plenty of leather conditioner and mega-heavy socks. Break-in Update after Three Weeks: Wearing the boots out this past week over one pair of thick boot socks has been great with the bottom eyelet/stitching pressure almost completely gone. I could wear these all day out around town now with no discomfort. They fit my feet like a leather foot glove now. Really very nice. Two-year Update: Bought in December 2021 and now it's December 2023 (almost) and the boots are holding up very well. Still look great, especially after scrubbing the white side soles and scraping off the suds with a spoon. Clean again. Boots are easy to clean and condition with the Bick 4 conditioner. I wear them casually with jeans, so can't speak to how they hold up to physical work. Laces fraying a bit at this point, but the leather and stitching still holding up really well and still wearing them over thick LL Bean boot socks is nice and comfy. ... show more

  • Very Good Boots Very Good Boots
Size: 11 Wide Color: Tobacco
First, I am an 11W, and I ordered my actual size. The fit is good, but was a little tight in the toe box. At one week the leather had molded to my feet and this is no longer an issue. The leather itself is ball glove soft, and without any noticeable cuts. The stitching is tight and consistent. The tongue is very thin and more of a gusset than a tongue, but the boot easily laces without bunching up. The insole is soft and the wedge sole makes for a comfortable step. I received what looks like a return, based on dirt on one of the soles and undone laces, but otherwise they look new. Initially one looked tobacco and the other looked like it is Apache brown. If not, they were at least different enough for other people to notice (first thing my wife said). I treated the leather and they are identical now. I have a couple other comparable brands, and these are my favorites. Very comfortable now, and probably already my favorite boot. I did take out the gel insoles and put leather insoles from Nicks, which I bought here on Amazon. I added kilties and they are even more comfortable. ... show more

  • Excellent quality!
Size: 11 Wide Color: Tobacco
I worked in construction for 47 years as a sheet metal worker, in the field and also in the office. I know the value and importance of a good pair of work boots. If your feet are uncomfortable, you won’t perform at your best. Now that I’m retired, I find the need for good work boots while working outside on my property. These boots are well built, true to size and very comfortable. Good looking too! They are not light weight. My size 11 wide weigh two pounds each. I figure that is added benefit as I get a nice workout as I walk around, don’t need ankle weights! Haha! I wasn’t sure if the wedge soles were a better choice than waffle soles. Waffles do provide better traction until they get packed with mud. Then they can be a chore to clean out. The wedge soles on mine so far have provided adequate traction and are much easier to clean. If you’re looking for a great pair of work boots, these are well worth a try. ... show more

  • Throrgood vs RedWing
Size: 10.5 Color: Tobacco
So i've given these a few weeks now and feel like i can write an honest and fair review. I guess i'll basically be comparing these to my experiences with my first pair of 'real' boots; a beautifully broken in and well worn 3+ year old pair of Red Wing 9106's. Out of the box these look great, not quite as refined looking as Red Wing's but i knew that getting into this so wasn't disappointed there. These are, after all, supposed to be work boots. They fit maybe just a tiny bit bigger than RW heritage line stuff does but nothing major, i sized as i would have for RW's and all seems fine. Fit and finish is very nice for a boot of this price range, that said these ain't no Red Wings. Stitches started coming loose on day two, nothing major but still a few here and a few there. The rubber midsole looks kinda cheesy to me (you can barely see it but it's there and noticeable). There is a weird bump under the left boot from one of the lace eyelets that just won't go down no matter what i try and is quite uncomfortable. The toe is much more boxy and way less stylish than the RW version. The laces are falling apart already because of the sharp edge of the speed-lace eyelets. The speed-lace eyelets themselves are a point of contention with me as it's actually kind of a pain to tie the boots, it takes an act of contortion-ism to get them to stay tight without slipping out of the speed-lace eyelets. One set of speed-lace eyelets at the top would have been more than sufficient but instead they give you three with an actual closed eyelet above, which just seems silly. I actually fumble quite a bit getting them tied properly. I'm sure i'll get used to this minor issue but worth mentioning. This one is hard to explain and almost more visceral in nature but they just don't feel the same as RW's to me. My RW's, even after week two, felt like a perfectly fitting glove around my foot, it was an unmistakable feeling and i looked forward to lacing my boots up and conversely didn't want to take them off at the end of a 12+ hour day..these just don't deliver in that department the same way, it's purely personal and you may find that you prefer the feel of the Thorogood's on your feet. And the last issue would be that to me the leather just doesn't look nearly as beautiful and rich as RW's leather does. One thing that may give these a major leg up on the RW competition is with the sole. It is some kind of new proprietary material that Throrogood has apparently developed. They claim it will last 4-5 times that of the previous sole, that like RW's, just doesn't last long enough if you work around metal chips or walk on concrete all day. Another big plus is these come with an insole, unlike RW's, then again it may not be a nice one..time will tell. All in all I can't complain though, they are very nice boots and for the price you really can't beat them. I got them combined with a 20% off coupon that Amazon was offering so they were $120 or so shipped to my door, next day. You can't buy USED RW's for $120! All things considered they are really nice American made work boots and i imagine that if i take care of them they should last at least a solid year, maybe two. In summary: my Thorogood purchase is not disappointing in any way it's just hard not to compare every pair of boots you put on to RW's once you know that feeling. If your painfully style conscious and these are for more than just work (and you have the extra loot) i say go with RW's, hands down. However, if you need a sturdy pair of American made work boots that still look very nice and price has stopped you before then go with these. ... show more

  • My favorite boots My favorite boots
Size: 11 Wide Color: Tobacco
I have been wearing mine for over 4 years now and they are now my favorite boots. Supremely comfortable and supportive. My boots are still in great shape and expect many more miles and years from them. I rubbed some Kiwi boot conditioner on them and are now butter soft. Highly highly recommended. I would buy another pair without thought if I needed them. I do not remember really any break-in before the boots were comfortable. High quality. American made goodness using the proven Goodyear Welt design. ... show more

  • Literally unwearable and unbearable. Never buying thorogoods ever again
Size: 15 Color: Tobacco
I have a pair thats 3 years old that im currently wearing at work. I bought a brand new pair thinking I'd treat myself. Oh boy, was I wrong. Instead, what I received were a pair that looked almost identical, and yet right out of the box, I could tell someone made a really, REALLY bad decision at thorogood. The quality of the leather in the old pair was (as in when I first bought them and right out of the box) nice and thick, soft enough to be comfortable yet stiff enough to provide good ankle support. The quality of the leather in the new pair was atleast half as thick, which is far too thin, obviously soft comfortable but offered absolutely no ankle support. It was so thin I was actually worried I'd rub a hole into the toes and ankles before I even got to fully break them in. Then you move on to the tongue. In the old pair, the tongue was the perfect size and shape, and made with that same nice, thick leather. Soft enough for comfort, stiff enough that the tongue wouldn't bunch up and create hot spots but instead lay perfectly flat against the top of your foot. The new pair not only is using the garbage quality, super thin leather but also has the added major issue of having an oversized tongue. Just way too much material. With the leather being so thin and soft and there being too much of it, even after multiple attempts of getting it to sit right, I couldnt put the new pair on without creating extremely uncomfortable hotspots everywhere. Literally made the boots unbearable for a few seconds to try on and see how they felt, let alone an entire 10 hour shift at work. Overall, it's safe to say I wont be buying another pair of thorogoods ever again, which is crazy considering I've worn them exclusively for over a decade. Buy yourself some Danner's, or if you can afford it, do what I did. The day I returned these disappointments, I bought 2 pairs of PNW boots. A $400 pair of Drew's 10" loggers as work boots and a pair of Nick's 8" builder pros in shrunken bison black for every day boots. The Nick's were $790 after shipping, and i wont be getting them for another 10-14 weeks, but just like the Drew's and every other pnw boot, those things are apocalypse proof and literally built to last multiple lifetimes. When the soles wear out in 8-10 years, send them back, get them resoled for less than the price of 1 pair of these thorogoods, and you'll get another 8-10 years on them. Then do it all over again. Super expensive, yes, but the greatest example of buy once, cry once. Tl;dr: the thorogood you think you know no longer exists. Youre better off buying 5 pairs of cheap Walmart work boots for the same price as one of these. They'll be more comfortable and each pair will last longer. You heard it here first from a long time thorogood lover who will never buy another pair of thorogoods ever again. ... show more

  • Excellent quality and value, UK buyer
Size: 10.5 Color: Tobacco
I'm a UK customer, so extra things to consider... There seems to be only one UK seller of these, and they wanted £190 ($290), and didn't have my size! With (free, Prime) P&P, Import Duty, but reduced by a Fall Sale (10%) offer, these came to £115 ($175). I'm a European 44 size, 9 1/2 UK, which equates to 10 1/2 US. I downloaded the Thorogood shoe size chart which confirmed that, and my standard width. The shoes arrived and fitted perfectly. The forecast delivery date was November 5th, they arrived October 31st. The tracker still shows them as being at customs! So, in terms of value, ease, accuracy... Everything was perfect. As for the shoes... My wife saw the design in a Sunday Magazine, as worn by David Beckham. She liked the design so we took a chance. In the flesh, she loves them, as do I. For any UK buyers who don't know the US (I worked there for a few years) there are some things our transatlantic cousins do really well, and preparing leather is one of them. These are basically oiled hide, but the leather is soft enough to be used for gloves, a bit thicker than for formal gloves but a pair of gardening gauntlets made like these would be spectacular! The colour, tobacco, is pleasant, not so garish as others which are rather yellow, e.g., Timberland. They fit like a glove, as proven by how parallel the eyelets finish when laced just snug. 6" height is just right for me. 8" is available but I suspect would irritate me. The insole seems a decent cushioned type, similar to basic running shoes. Overall construction is very good, special mention of the Goodyear Welt which is nicely executed (it's stepped in from the sole, making it less "clunk"), and a mark of quality construction:- to quote from the Crockett and Jones website "The Goodyear Welted construction is expensive, time consuming and requires highly skilled craftsmanship. Invented hundreds of years ago, it is still considered the finest method of shoe construction today". The mocassin effect is created by pinching and stitching round a cord rather than stitching 2 pieces together, obviously better for waterproofing. The top of the boot also seems to have a cord within, maintaining the shape. There appears to be a fibre (?) toecap which could be steel in another option. All in all, a great shoe, quality of manufacturing just shines through, and at the Amazon import price, a bargain. For me, only 2 minor downsides: As mentioned elsewhere, the little US flag stitched into the last is a bit of an eyesore. Good for the manufacturers to displayed the "made here" flag, but just looks a bit tatty. Underneath the loop at the back of the shoe would be better. This will be fixed with careful use of a scalpel! Heavy (125g per shoe). In my opinion. But so are Timberlands etc. I usually wear Ecco Track II (80g), which have moulded soles and welts, GoreTex lined to be waterproof, light as a feather and sprung as if on air (in fact, air filled soles!)! But they are £145. And the NuBuck marks almost at the sight of dust! These Thorogoods have really heavy rubber-like soles. But still very comfortable. ... show more
