  • Good value for the price, could use some fixes.
I have a 2014 honda. I don't have any other scanners to compare to except for the Autel AutoLink AL319. Thinkdiag and AL319 have the same basic OBD2 information. Thinkdiag does give you a lot more manufacturer specific codes. Setup through the app is pretty straightforward. The app works but a bit clunky and needs some user interface fixes to make navigating the app easier. AutoVIN did work, as long as you have the specific car manufacturer downloaded. Examples: you would think the arrow pointing backwards on top would exit you from the current page. Some parts do not, and you have to tap the button on the bottom to exit that screen. Then, there is the wording which gets confusing. The top would say to press exit, but then there's no exit, it says finish. There's other wording problems too. Once you get a DTC error and try to look it up through the app, it just takes you to google. You can't copy and paste, nor does it search the error for you on the spot instantly. You are able to email the report to yourself or whatever email you want. Bi-directional testing did work, but I only tested a few simple things. I didn't get too far into that yet. There was a firmware update for the device, but I had to go look for it. Would be better if the app asked you if you wanted to update the firmware of the device first before using the thinkdiag, at least on first use. When comparing the OBD2 portions of the thinkdiag and the Autel AL319, I feel like the AL319 provided better and clearer information than the thinkdiag. The I/M readiness of the AL319 works great. I couldn't get the I/M readiness test to work on the thinkdiag. Not sure what the problem was. I think that's about it, I'll try and write more once I use the device more. Oh you do have to pay for a subscription. Pricing is pretty straight forward. I think all high-level scanners ($600-$1000+) require subscriptions, at least the ones I looked at, and that's on top of the device purchase. So I think thinkdiag is a good value in that regard. Thinkdiag does give you a 10% discount if you subscribe for their all (all car brands) software package, but that's only good for 24 hours after you register the device. ... show more

  • My Best Scan Tool Yet
As a DIYer, my initial impression of ThinkDiag is very positive. I am actually quite impressed with all the functionality this tool provides. Factory (Enhanced) capability, reset functions and bidirectional capabilities are very important features when it comes finding a complete scan tool solution and this product provides all of this at a very reasonable cost. I downloaded the factory diagnostic software for Honda/Acura and Toyota/Lexus and both seem to work very well. I will say that I have not yet used any of the bidirectional or actuation commands to make sure they work as advertised. In the case of my 2014 Acura RDX and 2007 Lexus IS250 the tool communicates well with all the different systems. The Bluetooth setup is very convenient, however, communication can be a bit slow for certain queries, however, I don’t find this to be a major problem. You get one free factory subscription for the first year, so I got the Honda one for free and paid $35 for the Toyota one. Next year, I will spend $35-$40 x 2 to renew both for another year. I found it confusing in researching the tool initially in terms of features, initial cost and what was required, so I explain some of this. (1) When you buy the factory diagnostic software you get ALL functionality they provide for all vehicles made by that factory. So for example, the Honda software also works with Acura and Toyota also works with Lexus. (2) What confused me the most was that they also sell separate maintenance packages (aka Maintenance Software, found under Maintenance Functions) that will bundle a specific function for ALL manufacturers, however, just understand that when you purchase the factory diagnostic software, those bundled features are already included in your package, so there is no need for you to pay another $50 for each the bundled package UNLESS you were to need that function for ALL manufacturers. Initially I spent $118 for the dongle plus the $35 for the Toyota/Lexus factory diagnostic software. The advantage of this setup is that it is simple, you download the software into your Android or IOS device, and don’t have to fork thousands of additional dollars to pay for some dedicated vendor-provided tablet or hardware, which is nothing more than a strategy to force you into spending a lot more. I was initially looking into an Autel diagnostics tablet that costs upwards of $3,000, however, this Think Car setup seems to provide very close to the same functionality at a fraction of the cost. Another thing with the Autel diagnostics tablet (to be fair, they also sell other less expensive alternatives for DIYers), as with many others, I believe they force you into paying for a bundled diagnostic software package that includes all manufacturers, something that also inflates initial cost and renewal each year. Think Car also sells an all manufacturer software option for the ThinkDiag. It all depends on what features you need, what you can do without and what you are willing to pay. This is a very competitive market that is changing fast. If this tool delivers on everything they promise, it is a game changer for sure. It is my understanding that you don’t necessarily have to acquire any factory diagnostic software, in which case you’ll end up with just the basic, or generic OBD2 functionality, which is quite limited. ... show more

  • Easy to use extra software fees
Scanner is fairly easy to use once it’s setup. I had some trouble getting mine setup but with the helps from customer service they got it going. Thump up for customer service. So here is my opinion on this product for everyone out there consider buying it. My scanner came with 2 free softwares so I went ahead downloaded 2 All System Full Function on 2 vehicles make that I work on most. I thought I would be able to scan code, do special function test and maintenance reset. Well turned out that I can’t use maintenance reset for a simple oil maintenance reset. If I remember correctly in order to have oil reset I have to pay around $40 extra for that oil reset. Same extra pay for abs bleed and other functions. I would give a 5 stars for just including free oil reset function with my free softwares. Note: softwares subscription is only for 1 year which I’m ok with as I don’t work on cars a lot except mine n other family members. ... show more
