NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In Danielle Steel’s epic novel, the lives of four generations of women in one family span fortune and loss, motherhood, tragedy and victories. From the glamorous San Francisco social scene of the 1920s, through war and the social changes of the ’60s, to the rise of Silicon Valley today, this extraordinary novel takes us on a family odyssey that is both heartbreaking and inspiring, as each generation faces the challenges of their day. The Parisian design houses in 1928, the crash of 1929, the losses of war, the drug culture of the 1960s—history holds many surprises, and lives are changed forever. For richer or for poorer, in cramped apartments and grand mansions, the treasured wedding dress made in Paris in 1928 follows each generation into their new lives, and represents different hopes for each of them, as they marry very different men. From inherited fortunes at the outset to self-made men and women, the wedding dress remains a cherished constant for the women who wear it in each generation and forge a destiny of their own. It is a symbol of their remaining traditions and the bond of family they share in an ever-changing world. Read more

  • Quite the family saga!
4 1/2 STARS! A novel by Danielle Steel is always sure to please and THE WEDDING DRESS is no exception. A family rich in depth and character falls into despair during the crash of 1929 just after their only daughter wore the Parisian designed wedding dress of her dreams to marry the love of her life. Hard times hit them all for many years as they slowly learn to live a different life than they dreamed of, but prosper in their own way none-the-less. The story lines sees us through the lives of all of these characters into several generations to come as this wedding dress is the start of several marriages. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a family rich saga that shares both ups and downs of life as the story delves deeply into each character. Through love and hate, dreams and nightmares, riches and the simple things in life we follow the lives of the families. There's a lot to comprehend along the way, but I really enjoyed it. ... show more

  • The dress that has a four generation story
I loved this book! Once I started reading it I did not want to put it down. I read it in one day. The story starts in the mid 1920s with very well to do young lady getting engaged and going to Paris to have her wedding dress custom made by one of the top designer's of the era. The story takes you thru the Depression, World War 2, and many decades later. The wedding dress is used by four generations of the same family and the amazing women who wore it each have a a story to tell of their lives. There is one generation which does not wear the dress because of being the rebellious 60s era. Each of the bride's stories will touch your heart in its own special way. I have read everyone of Danielle Steel's books over the years and each one touches my heart in a different way each time. This one I cried, laughed, and cheered the bride on as she goes through life. I highly recommend this book. ... show more

  • One dress, 3 generations of women
From the roaring '20s into the great depression and a world war, through the '60s and drugs, and into the '80s and beyond, this book follows several generations of women from one family. From wealthy mansions to living in tiny apartments barely making ends meet, an elegant wedding dress is passed down from one generation to the next. There is love, laughter, tears and heartbreak, lives lost and new ones born, marriages that flourish and others that crumble, but one wedding dress represents different hopes for the women, who marry very different men. ... show more

  • Wonderful story spanning multiple generations
I buy every Danielle Steel book as I know I’ll enjoy the book. Some of her books are predictable and maybe I don’t enjoy them as much as others. Which is ok, as I read books to take me away from my everyday life to experience something different for however long it takes me to read the book. I really enjoyed this book. It’s starts in the 1920’s and takes you through five generations of a family. From wealth and living in mansions then loosing the wealth and living in a small cottage, from banking to the early start of computers, and gardening and flipping houses. The one constant is the timeless wedding dress that is worn by first by a daughter during the height of her family’s wealth, then years later by her own granddaughter, and then eventually by her great granddaughter. All in all I felt this was a beautiful story that I really enjoyed. ... show more

  • *** Loved It ***
The Wedding Dress is an emotional story which begins in the 1920's. It starts with Charles and Louise Deveraux and follows them and their descendants through to today. We see the opulent lifestyle they lead. Their daughter Eleanor has her 'coming out' ball in 1928 and that is where she meets her future husband Alex. When the stock market crashed in 1929 many of the rich were left paupers. This story follows them and their offspring as they attempt to bring some normalcy back to their life. From the great depression we follow them through WWII. They survive never realizing how strong they could be. Nothing is sugar coated and you will feel all their pain as you follow along. There are tears but there are also smiles and you will finish satisfied and with a smile. ... show more
