  • Really, really good.
Is there a difference between a romantic novel and a romance novel? Is it fair, for instance, to compare Pride and Prejudice, with its deep classical theory and commentary on class struggles, to Julia Quinn’s Bridgeton novels with their keen observation of society and love? Is one better than the other? Let me admit something to you. It is not something I am proud of. I AM A BOOK SNOB. There I have admitted it. Judge me. I deserve it. For years I have been a slave to the expectations of my education. Ever since I read Nabokov and Joyce in a freshman lit course, I only read important books. The ones that win the Booker prize or the National book award. You know - weighty novels. I had begun to believe what my professors taught me - that what you read matters and maybe if you read more important books you are better than other people. But in the last year (maybe it was COVID) something snapped and I developed a romance addiction. And I mean addiction ... in 2020 I read 291 romance novels and I didn't start until March. This year I have already completed 82. And I have learned a few things. I was the dumb one. I missed out on something enjoyable because of a preconceived notion. Granted, I found where some of those notions come from. There are some absolutely atrocious romance novels out there. But then - and here is the review - I get lucky enough that someone recommends a book like Jasmine Guillory's The Wedding Date where the main characters are equals. Both Alexa and Drew are smart and funny. The book and the characters have personality. They fall in love with each other, with a few bumps along the way, in a funny, honest, and then all-consuming way. From the moment I picked this up, I was hooked. It is a story with heat, heart, and substance. It reminded me that my current addiction is OK. There are great books in the genre that are also extremely well written. Is this destined to be a classic? Probably not. Will it make the list of best books ever? Not likely. But this is good. Really, really good. ... show more

  • Pure comfort reading, feel-good fiction for stressful times
Alexa is the chief of staff for the mayor of San Francisco; Drew is a pediatric surgeon in L.A. Sparks fly when they're trapped in an elevator together, and Drew invites Alexa to be his date for a weekend wedding. She's looking to break out of a dating slump and agrees to go; they end up having a wonderful time and a long distance romance begins. But as they grow closer, will either of them admit that it's more than just a fling? I will say two good things and one criticism about the book. The first good thing: it is a joy to read, like sipping hot chocolate, warm and sweet and goes down easy. In this tumultuous time we're living in, that goes a LONG way; it is pure comfort reading. The writing is funny and effortless. I never wanted to stop reading, and I felt satisfied when it was done. The second good thing is how much I enjoyed reading a book with two professionally accomplished leads. They both have challenging careers, and they both care about their work and are good at it. We see both of them in professional settings, thinking about their work, stressing about things that matter. Alexa is trying to fund an arts program for at-risk teenagers, and Drew has a kid who's not recovering well after surgery. They also both have broad social circles filled with interesting, good people. I really enjoyed reading a book in which the characters are essentially all role models. Alexa in particular is a well drawn character, with relatable insecurities and a sharp, funny way of looking at the world. Drew is a bit more generic, but he's still a good guy. And this brings me to the criticism -- there isn't any real conflict. Drew is commitment phobic, and tends to dump women after a few months; and Alexa is worried about getting attached to him. But this doesn't ever go anywhere. I always find it irritating when the big conflict of the book could be resolved if either character would just talk to the other one. What's a little stranger is that there is potential for real conflict here. Alexa is black and Drew is white, and beyond that, Ms. Mallory does talk about the white privilege that Drew enjoys, and there is one instance where he makes a somewhat uninformed remark about her youth program. I'm curious why she didn't build more conflict around that -- not around racial issues, particularly; I liked that they were inter-racial. But why not build conflict that is more original and specific to who these people are, and the work they do? At one point Ms. Mallory mentions in passing that they have to learn how to adapt to two difficult and challenging careers; that is also an interesting conflict, rarely explored, and these are two characters who could handle it. There's part of me that enjoyed a book in which nothing bad happens, but it also was a little odd that this is a book in which nothing much happens: two attractive, likable, accomplished people meet, fall in love, and.... the end, basically! All that being said -- it was warm, and sweet, and comforting, and funny, and I'm on board for all of that. A good read that deserves to be read. (And P.S. just to back up what Roxane Gay said in her 5-star review: it is very funny how much they ate. I guess since they weren't fighting, and they couldn't have sex ALL the time, they needed something else to do, so they ate constantly -- donuts, waffles, burgers, burritos, more donuts, more donuts. It was kind of hysterical.) ... show more

  • Will you be my date?
This was a quick, fun read. I liked Alexa and Drew together. They had instant chemistry that wasn't forced and since the initial date for the wedding wasn't "real", they were able to truly be themselves around each other without all the tension of trying to impress each other. I loved that Alexa didn't let anyone at the wedding intimidate her, especially the bride's sister, Amy. I'm not sure what her thing was, yet she was a mess. I liked that the bride and groom, Molly and Josh, Drew's ex and best friend, were genuinely nice to Alexa. Drew was a confusing man. He didn't know how to be in a relationship, and I was a bit frustrated at his 'don't know how to communicate my feelings' type of persona. He was a doctor and grown man...get it together dude🤨. Since I read some of the later books in this series first, it was nice to read about other characters in a new light. I really like Carlos, Drew's doctor best friend, and can't wait to read his story next. Good series. Good read. ... show more

  • Awesome love story
A wedding date turned into an amazing weekend. Which became a long distance relationship between two people unsure of how they really felt about one another. It end with an amazing love story and a happy ever after.

  • Easy Breezy Romance
This was a feel good romance story with lots of spicy moments. I loved the free spirit of both of the characters and the lightness of the book.
