I had been looking at DRO PROS magnetic scales for my mill. However, their packages were beyond my budget. Looking for comparable alternatives, I noticed that several of the greybeards on the Hobby Machinist Forum had installed Ditron kit when it first became available. Net-net, the Ditron gear got good marks - accurate, impervious to fluids, and an affordable alternative to the DRO PROS hardware. They also noted Ditron's strong first-line customer support. I ordered the 1 micron three axis kit with RPM for my Sieg X3 mill. It was shipped promptly and arrived in less than a week. I was quite pleased with the quality of the scales, the readers, the cabling and the readout. The scales have the leveling grub screws, the hash marks are marked to show scale direction, and everything is tight and clean. The readers are compact. The readout is intuitive, and it has some attractive features (i.e. graphic displays of cutter position vis-a-vis bolt circle landmarks). The hall sensor and cabling look good. Overall, excellent. There was an issue with the shipping. The box showed signs of rough handling. It had come loose inside producing a springy convex bend in the 550 mm scale. It was easily visible on a machined surface, and the 29 mil gap exceeded the specified 0.5 - 1.2 mm range for reader head-to-scale distance. I contacted Kate, the Ditron Customer Support person. She responded within the hour (!), initiating the process to replace the scale. After several days, a replacement scale was shipped. It arrived four or five days later, packaged to survive any trip - even to package hell. It was perfect. So, excellent marks for customer support. I am pleased so far. The media could not be loaded. I have purchased two of the 3-axis D80 DROs. The first came with a bad circuit board, but they quickly sent me a new one. I replaced the board and it has worked well. One unit is mounted on my bench lathe and the other on my bench mill. I tested the accuracy over 10 mm of travel with a new Mitutoyo indicator with 1 um accuracy. They agree within 4 um (.16 thou) and 29 um (1.1 thou) (I have the 5 um resolution scales). Note, it is possible to calibrate these by entering a linear or nonlinear compensation in the DRO. Also, it depends somewhat on temperature and how flat you can get them installed. Keep in mind, the scales have adjustment set screws on the ends that you need to use to get them to be straight. It seems to work well enough. The LCD display is really nice and has a wide viewing angle. There are also a lot of built in functions for lathes and milling machine. I haven't used most of them yet. The magnetic scales are also easy too cut to length. I can't imagine installing a glass scale on these "small" machines, so the magnetic system really shines here. But, yes, do get an Accurite for your Bridgeport. ... show more

The product is good, I haven't started to use it yet. I just installed. Lack of instructions, you have to be handy and have some experience to be able to install it. There are parts and sensors that are not specifics for and not book let that explain how to use them or install. Other than that I am happy, I hope it last. ... show more
