Description

Sauron has returned. . . watch The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 on Prime Video. For the first time ever, a very special edition of the forerunner to The Lord of the Rings, illustrated throughout in color by J.R.R. Tolkien himself and with the complete text printed in two colors. The Silmarillion fills in the background which lies behind the more popular work, and gives the earlier history of Middle-earth, introducing some of the key characters. The Silmarilli were three perfect jewels, fashioned by Fëanor, most gifted of the Elves, and within them was imprisoned the last Light of the Two Trees of Valinor. But the first Dark Lord, Morgoth, stole the jewels and set them within his iron crown, guarded in the impenetrable fortress of Angband in the north of Middle-earth.The Silmarillion is the history of the rebellion of Fëanor and his kindred against the gods, their exile from Valinor and return to Middle-earth, and their war, hopeless despite all the heroism, against the great Enemy. It is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back, and in whose events some of them such as Elrond and Galadriel took part. The book also includes several shorter works: the Ainulindalë, a myth of the Creation, and the Valaquenta, in which the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. The Akallabêth recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age, and Of the Rings of Power tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age, as narrated in The Lord of the Rings.Tolkien could not publish The Silmarillion in his lifetime, as it grew with him, so he would leave it to his son, Christopher Tolkien, to edit the work from many manuscripts and bring his father’s great vision to publishable form, so completing the literary achievement of a lifetime. This special edition presents anew this seminal first step towards mapping out the posthumous publishing of Middle-earth, and the beginning of an illustrious forty years and more than twenty books celebrating his father’s legacy. This definitive new edition includes, by way of an introduction, a letter written by Tolkien in 1951 which provides a brilliant exposition of the earlier Ages, and for the first time in its history is presented with Tolkien’s own paintings and drawings, which reveal the breathtaking grandeur and beauty of his vision of the First Age of Middle- earth. Tolkien’s epic creation, offering a unique and visually stunning experience that brings the rich world of Arda to life. The illustrations included in this edition are nothing short of extraordinary. Tolkien’s own artwork beautifully complements the text, adding a new layer of depth and immersion to the already captivating story. Each illustration is meticulously detailed, enhancing the reader’s connection to the intricate lore and mythical landscapes described in The Silmarillion. The combination of Tolkien’s words and artwork makes this edition a true collector’s item. The quality of the book itself is superb. The hardcover binding is sturdy and elegant, and the high-quality paper showcases the illustrations in all their glory. • Beautiful
Just in case other reviews get mixed in here like sometimes happens, my review is for the illustrated version of the Simarillion, ISBN 978-0-063-28077-9. I preordered this book since my paperback version of the Simarillion is small & a bit hard to read at times. This book also is a nice addition to my growing collection of illustrated Tolkien books. The first thing I noticed was the gorgeous dust cover. This is what first drew me to the book & it is just as beautiful in person. I was happy to find that the aesthetic quality of the book’s actual cover matches that of the dust cover. The elven runes along the pages when the book is closed is a nice fanciful touch, enticing the reader to enter into Valinor and Middle Earth. I can’t quite properly explain what I mean, so I have included pictures. Speaking of pictures… I know there have been complaints with this and other released illustrated Tolkien books that there is not enough in the way of illustrations. I have included pictures of the list of illustrations that is right after the table of contents. There are 59 listed illustrations. If you are looking for large breathtaking page-encompassing illustrations each time, you will be disappointed. Where it says “device”, “title page”, or “floral design”, small decorative pieces of art are included to add to the beauty of the text without distracting from it. When a listing has a notation that says “facing”, that is a full page of art; there are 21 of these. There is also a map that is included with the book, but not attached to it, allowing you to have it open in front of you for easy reference while you are reading, if you should choose to do so. Possibly my favorite little surprise is the yellow ribbon bookmark. I didn’t expect it and have never owned a fictional book that had one. It makes the book feel that much more special. It is a very small thing, but it makes me happy. I’m not going to review the book itself here in much detail because, although I am quite familiar with the Legendarium, I still need to finish reading the Simarillion for myself. Tolkien’s devotion to world-building is unmatched and once I realized that this is written in a style similar to that of many ancient myths, it has been a lot easier to enjoy the book for what it is, rather than comparing it to the more novelistic style of the Hobbit & the Lord of the Rings. In summary: this is a gorgeous edition of the Simarillion that I would highly recommend purchasing. The art is lovely, but has not been inserted so frequently so as to distract from the text itself. Tastes may vary and some may prefer more illustrations, but 59 illustrations (21 of which take up a full page) are sufficient for my taste. If you want more illustrations, this might not be the edition for you. If you want some art, but get distracted from the text if it there are a lot of illustrations in a book, this might be the book for you. I know it is for me. ❤️ ... show more
