I absolutely loved The Silent Wife by Karin Slaughter. Karin Slaughter has once again shown that she is a master storyteller. The Silent Wife is the tenth book in the Will Trent series and this one is my favorite book in the series. The Silent Wife is the story of Sara Linton, medical examiner and Will Trent, an investigator with the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI). The Silent Wife takes places in current day Atlanta and eight years ago in Grant County. After a murder takes place at the local prison, an inmate, Daryl Nesbitt, tells Will and Faith Mitchell, his partner that he was proof that the murders that he is suspected of committing eight years ago are still occurring in other areas in Georgia. I loved that flashback scenes from eight years ago, because I have always loved Jeffrey Tolliver. I enjoyed reading the history about what happened between Sara and Jeffrey that lead to their divorce. I loved all the interactions between Sara and Jeffrey. The GBI investigates the cases that Daryl had given them and have concluded the similarities between a current case and those committed eight years ago. All the deaths were listed as accidental deaths. Sara retrieves Jeffrey's notebooks hoping to find a clue. Sara and Will are having some issues with their relationship, Sara did not like the way Will asked her to marry him. Sara's memories of Jeffrey and the Grant County victims, is adding additional tension to their relationship. I love how the title to The Silent Wife is incorporated into the story. I was totally surprised by the identity of the serial rapist/murderer. Would never have guessed his identify until his first victim's remembers a detail from the of her attack and a statement made by the guilty party. The Silent Wife is filled with all the characters that I have grown to love and all the bittersweet and poignant moments as well as the surprise plot twists that I have come to love and expect in Karin Slaughter's books. The Silent Wife did not disappoint. I loved the surprise between Sara and Will, but my favorite part was the Author's Note and all the details and spoilers that Karin Slaughter shared. I especially loved her remark about Jeffrey and Will. Another incredible Karin Slaughter book.

When the past and present begin to collide, Will realizes that everything he values is at stake . . Fans of Karin Slaughter, of the earlier Grant County series will love this book! We get another look at Jeffrey before he lost his life. The book alternates between the past with Jeffrey ...and Lena and the present with Will and Sara. The action is non-stop the suspense starts on the very first page and maintains a high level throughout. As always, the characters are outstanding.... Sara, Will, Faith, Amanda, Jeffrey, Lena. This is like getting two entire stories wrapped into one cleverly written plot. The relationships between Sara and Jeffrey then, and Sara and Will now kept me glued to the pages. As with all her books, it's well written, characters solidly drawn, lots of action, a real page turner.Although 10th in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone.

Oh my Gosh!! A new Will Trent novel <3. Will is one of my favorite male characters. He is so broken and so smart at the same time. Surprisingly, I adored Sara Linton too. In general, we tend to be harder on the female characters. Thinking things like "she is making the wrong choice", "she is putting herself in danger unnecessarily", "she is acting mean for no reason" or maybe it's just me that expects to read more about smarter, interesting and powerful women characters. Luckily, I never have to complain about Sara. She is perfect for Will. She makes him more confident and even though it takes him a while to open up, she gets him to do it. Also, her own traumas and the way she has handled herself through all of it, makes me respect her. Or maybe because she is a doc is why I like her so much. Who knows, it may be all of it. Getting back to The Silent Wife, Karin Slaughter wields her magic wand and we get to be back in Grant County, with a younger Sara and Grant County's Chief officer, Jeffrey Tolliver. How you might ask? simple a serial killer. At the beginning of the book, a prison riot brings the GBI to investigate. While gathering information, an inmate, Daryl Nesbit, wants to talk to Will and Faith. He says he is innocent of a crime and he has the proof. Women have gone missing after he was put in prison and he blames Jeffrey and Lena Adams for letting the serial killer run free. By several POV's and by intercalating past and present chapters, we get a bigger picture of what truly happened. The identity of the serial killer was shocking but maybe not too much. It all made sense. Karin's writing is always raw and gritty. True evil is out there in the world and she knows how to bring it into her fictional world in a masterful way. In regards to the characters, I already drooled over Will and Sara at the beginning of my review, so I will say that Faith is another strong female character. Being in her head is always entertaining and I do love her relationship with Will as a partner and as his friend. Amanda as their boss is the cherry on top. She seems to be one step ahead of everyone every single time. I know the majority of readers love Jeffrey. I'm in the minority. I was never a Jeffrey fan. I thought Sara deserved better. However, he annoyed me very little in this one. One thing I want to make clear in case I haven't done it in my prior reviews is that I HATE Lena. I hope she gets what she deserves. She is a horrible person and doesn't learn from her mistakes. Really sad for her husband. Cliffhanger: No 4/5 Fangs

I made the mistake of starting this book when I went to bed on Friday night. By 3:30 AM, I realized that there was no way I'd finish it in one sitting (or one lying, in this case) so overslept the next day. The book consumed my weekend, until I finally finished it Sunday night at 1:30 AM and was very sleepy at work today. The Silent Wife is a treasure for long time readers of Karin Slaughter. Will and Sara are investigating a serial killer with ties to Sara's past. Sara's deceased husband Jeffrey thought he had put the right man behind bars, but when the killings resume Sara is forced to consider that Jeffrey was wrong. The renewed focus on Jeffrey makes Will question Sara's feelings for him, and he must try to navigate how to have a healthy relationship while chasing a brutal killer. Some of the chapters in "The Silent Wife" take place in the past, and focus on Jeffrey's investigation of the early murders. At that time, Jeffrey and Sara are divorced after she caught him cheating. They must work together, though Sara's grief and anger are still very raw. It was wonderful to revisit the characters from the Grant County books.... even Lena. I imagine that this book would be enjoyable to someone new to Karin Slaughter's work because her trademarks of relentless suspense, a smart mystery, and a truly frightening killer are all here. However, it will be more of a reward to loyal readers who have become fond of these characters over the years. In her afterward (which you should NOT read before reading the novel!), it is clear that the author loves her characters and realizes her readers do as well. This book feels like a gift to those loyal fans.

My first exposure to Karin Slaughter was a Will Trent book. The compelling crime story drew me in, but what hooked me was her characterizations. I quickly realized how unusual Trent was - not some faux quirky cop character out of central casting but a truly well-written, deeply complex and unique one - and I was hooked. All of her characters are fleshed out and complicated, even if only briefly a part of the story. Even the bad guys (and gals) and the truly unlikeable characters are never stereotypes; they are fully realized. Slaughter brings characters to life in way that keeps you invested in the stories. Nothing is black and white in Slaughter's world; she paints in shades of gray. I've devoured every single one of Slaughter's books, and this time I took it slow and read this book in two days - see, I can pace myself! Slaughter has outdone herself with this novel; it comes together masterfully. It is an excellent crime story, and I did not anticipate the ending, which is rare. This genre can be formulaic and it's not easy to keep astute readers from picking up on clues - but I honestly did not know whodunnit until it was revealed. Also, Slaughter furthers the stories of characters we've grown to care for deeply: Will, Sara, and even Jeffrey. [There are some incredibly funny lines as Faith's story moves forward as well.] I don't usually care for the technique of moving backward and forward in time - but the technique works especially well here. I can't say enough good things about The Silent Wife. I think I'm too entrenched in the series to be able to say if this book is good as a standalone; I personally would suggest starting at the beginning and taking the whole journey - it's a doozy! And you'll love it. Karin Slaughter is one of the best writers in this genre. As good as Mark Billingham, Peter Robinson, and Jonathan Kellerman, some of my other favorites. Keep them coming, Ms. Slaughter!!!

This is the absolutely best Will Trent book that I have read, and I have read all of them! In this mesmerizing suspense thriller, Will pairs up with an entire FBI team, including all of my favorite characters. Sara Linton is the medical examiner who is the love of Will’s life, even though part of her heart still belongs to her deceased husband, former Sheriff Jeffrey Tolliver. Amanda is the head of the FBI team, a boss who is doggedly determined to find out the truth of the crimes. And Faith Mitchell, Will’s sidekick in the FBI, is his calming influence. The crimes are gruesome, with the graphic details of the torture included by the author. Slaughter has certainly done her research with this book as the details clearly demonstrate! Young women are being stalked, set out in the woods with a paralyzing agent and raped repeatedly. Then they are left to die. The consensus is that the perpetrator is in prison already, but why are there more victims after his incarceration? This is the hard question that Will, Faith and Sara are charged to answer. The time frame is the past, with the investigation of Jeffrey Tolliver resulting in Darryl Nesbitt’s conviction, and the present, with the current FBI team trying to find out if Jeffrey’s investigation was flawed. The loose ends of Sara’s relationship with Jeffrey is tied up by the end of this book, and I was delighted to discover many intricate details about their past lives together. The investigation goes down some really twisted trails, and the author did a masterful job of engaging me in it. I loved this book and everything about it. Even the gruesome details of the torture were necessary for the atmosphere and for the background of the case. Fans of crime thrillers and dark suspense will love this book. It can be read as a standalone, but my recommendation is to read this series in order. It's been almost 20 years since Karin Slaughter killed off Sara Linton's husband dramatically and savagely in the last few pages of a novel as a horrific surprise for her readers. I've started to recover in the last few years, largely because I really like Will Trent. In this novel, we get both of Sara's men investigating the same crimes, but somehow it's only been 5 years since the Chief's death and 8 years since the first of what now appear to be the crimes of a serial killer and rapist. I guess I understand the time-shortening; we don't want Sara to get too old. But I didn't miss Lena (she's horrible), and I could have sworn Sara's family, especially her sister, were far less bitchy and unappealing in the previous pre-death books. Tessa fumbled, yes, but she wasn't mean. Anyway the story is pretty good, but not very pleasant. The flashbacks aren't of happy times. But the crimes are interesting. I guessed who the killer was, but it's not obvious. It's definitely worth reading. And if you follow Sara and Will, you have to read it. HAVE TO.

My last review of a Karin Slaughter book ended up being basically a full chapter of me being a totally gushing fanboy. So I will try to keep this one short and sweet. This is my hands down favorite author in the whole world. It was so nice to get to revisit one of my favorite characters in Jeffrey Tolliver. I still love Sara, Will and, Faith, even more since like they are real people that I have grown up with in the last almost 20 years. To be honest I should say grown older with, as I refuse to grow up no matter how many people tell me I should. This story almost gave me whiplash from making me laugh, cry, swoon, and occasionally almost throw up. Even having Lena (who I absolutely detest for her treacherous personality, and having a very hot younger, if a tad daft, husband) in it didn't irritate me as much as I thought it would. I really want to see her brought to justice as she always seems to slip away from having to pay for being almost totally irredeemable in every way. This book is another can't miss chapter in the Grant County/Sara and Will saga that I hope never ends. I don't have any idea how K. S. comes up up with these stories and all the twists and turns that always lead to a nail biting, edge of your seat conclusion. As always I can hardly wait for the next book because every time I think it can't get any better than this, it somehow does.
