Description

30th Anniversary Edition with a new introduction by the authorNeal Carey has to keep the mob, the FBI, and a major television personality from killing his newest client, but he’s tempted to do the job himself.Sometime student and ever-reluctant detective Neal Carey would rather be finishing a dull doctoral thesis than staring down the nose of a loaded gun, but his new assignment doesn’t sound dangerous. All he has to do is pull off the ultimate makeover: turn Polly Paget, a gum-chewing, foul-mouthed, big-haired broad, into a perfect lady in time to testify in a rape case against Jack Landis, head of the Family Cable Network and America’s most beloved family man. But Polly isn’t cooperating, and everyone (including a former FBI agent, an obsessive- compulsive hitman, the Mafia, a porn prince, and a slew of tabloid reporters) is on her trail, turning Neal’s “simple” assignment into a deadly game of duck-duck-goose.In a hellish and hilarious escapade that takes him from the deserts of Nevada to the bright lights of Las Vegas and finally to a hair- raising climax in a shoddily built amusement park, Neal tries to escape the mob’s big guns while taking a slippery walk up the world’s biggest water slide. • Great story
Format: Kindle
I very much enjoyed this book but must admit the plot is so intricate it was hard for me to follow at times. Neal, a sometime detective, is hired to find and protect a woman, Polly, best described as a bimbo. There is a multitude of people also trying to find her. Most of them want to kill her. Therein lies the problem with the book. There are so many people after Polly, and all for different reasons, it is difficult to remember who is who and why. It does get all sorted out in the end but there is much killing, double crossing and other nasty stuff along the way. I found the book entertaining and like most Don Winslow books well written. ... show more

  • Fun crime story
Format: Kindle
This is one of Don Winslow's earlier works; the fourth of five books in the Neal Carey series. It's not necessary to have read the previous books but I would recommend it as the series is a little eccentric (or maybe eclectic), especially as compared to Winslow's more recent works. Basically, Neal Carey was a street kid who was taken under the wing of an eccentric private detective and, like his mentor, Neal became an "operative" for a secretive private agency that specializes in helping rich clients with their unpleasant difficulties. Neal is one of the best in the business but he has left the business and the agency (several times in fact). Now they need him back for another job. All that is just backstory to how Neal ends up playing babysitter to a foul mouthed party girl who is in hiding from the mega church pastor who used to be her sugar daddy. Think something along the lines of My Fair Lady meets the Witness Protection program... Then toss in some Elmore Leonard-type complications and you're in the ballpark. It's an awful lot of fun, full of unexpected and sometimes bizarre twists. I enjoyed it quite a bit. If you're tastes run to Carl Hiaasen, Elmore Leonard, and Donald E. Westlake's more humorous offerings then there's a pretty good chance you'll enjoy this early series from Don Winslow. ... show more

  • Neal Carey book 4
Format: Kindle
A rollicking good time. The writing was superb. The characters were wonderfully warped, My enjoyment was unparalleled. Neal Carey is a winner. Thank you Don Winslow.

  • A long slide
Format: Kindle
Not one of the best Neal Carey Mysteries. No real excitement. Too convoluted of a story. Lacking an interesting ending

  • I like it, amusing and intricate plot.
Format: Kindle
Have fun reading this book. My appetite is wetted to read more in this 5 book series. Winslow took the time to spell everything correctly and the grammar ain’t bad.

  • Typically Great Don Winslow Book
Format: Paperback
Another great book from Don Winslow. I couldn’t believe it when I saw this book along with some other Winslow books being rereleased. The prices for the original print editions were outrageous.

  • Fun
Format: Kindle
This is the first book I’ ve read in this series & I wish I had read the others. Whatever it was good & I’ll go back & read the other ones. Not rocket science but very entertaining.

  • Don Winslow is getting tired.
Format: Kindle
This strangely titled story represents a sharp decline in Winslow fiction. Completely forgettable characters and an a plot that is,at best, confusing; but more like incoherent and pointless. I will now take a long vacation from Winslow.
