I saw Samara Joy on TV; she sang "Guess Who I saw Today" and I was captivated. Shortly afterward, she won a Grammy and it was so well deserved. If you like jazz singers, Samara is the brightest and best around. She is, as many say, an heiress of the Ella Fitzgerald mantle, she sings older songs and is so great, fast or slow, ballad or upbeat. Keep your eyes out for her she is destined to be a star. I was a bit skeptical about this young chanteuse after hearing her on Austin City Limits. There was no questioning that she possessed a unique and beautiful voice-a gift for sure. Listening to her on the television it seemed to me that she was more intent on showing off her vocal prowess than in delivering the songs. Then I saw her live and quickly dismissed all my misgivings. An angelic presence and a voice to match. Then, I bought a couple CDs including this one and I was smitten- and I still am. I can't pick a favorite interpretation of the fine music and enchanting vocals presented on this CD. You will regret not buying this music sooner if you don't get it right now. How often do you hear a jazz singer of this quality, let alone one who is an alto! This has to be one of the best jazz records I've bought in a decade, maybe more. And let's hear it for the fabulous, tasteful backing musicians on this, especially the incomparable Kenny Washington on drums. What a record! I love it! ... show more

Was so impressed with her on 60 minutes I purchased both CDS 💿. Was one my best editions to my very large and old 💿 collection... U like Elia Fitzgerald..u will love this artist..I'm so impressed with the audio quality.... Buy both...u won't be disappointed...

    • What a voice! What a stylist!
It's hard to believe this singer--at 23!--actually exists, really. Her voice: about equal parts honey, vanilla and chocolate, with a great range (from soprano down to contralto) and smooth all the way. Based on my knowledge of opera singers, it seems to me that Ms. Joy sings "on the breath", not "with the breath". Great breath control, plus great diction. (Again, hard to believe Ms. Joy actually exists.) And then, a jazz stylist to match all the foregoing. I am stunned. Is she really only 23? Stylizes like an experienced 43-year-old jazz singer might. I love her diction (impeccable) and I love her range and smoothness and her discreet vibrato. Seems to me, a jazz singer like this comes along maybe once a century, if that. Hats off, as well, to her sidemen and to the recording engineers. (I'm an audiophile and greatly appreciate excellence in recording.) You'd better get this, "while supplies last". ... show more

    • Samara Joy has a new fan!
There are times when you get an album and it grows on you after listening to it a few times. This is NOT one of those albums. I was hooked from the first song and it kept getting better. Samara's interpretation of these songs is not just excellently done, but I get the impression that she thoroughly enjoyed doing them! What a joyful experience it has been!
