Description

"Grant sets a new gold standard for romantic suspense." - New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz When a food storage depot in famine-struck South Sudan is torched, American aid worker Brie Stewart flees, only to land in a market where she’s the next item up for auction. Is the attack on the aid facility another assault upon the war-torn fledgling democracy, or has her family set her up as a pawn in their quest for oil rights? Chief Warrant Officer Sebastian Ford crossed paths with Brie years ago when she was a shill for her family’s company, pushing a pipeline that threatened his tribe’s land. Determined to lead the rescue operation to save her, he won’t let her abduction—or the attraction that flares between them—get in the way of settling their unfinished business. The Green Beret’s skills are put to the test in the flooded grasslands of South Sudan, where they must battle nature and dangerous factions who are after more than oil. Bastian and Brie put their hearts on the line as they find themselves embroiled in a conflict that extends beyond country and continent. Together they must douse the spark before it reaches the flashpoint and engulfs everything they hold dear. This book was so much better than I ever imagined it would be. And had I not needed the subject matter for a challenge, I would have probably never read it. The plot and tropes involved are just not things that interest me. I'm not a fan of military or political plots, don't like trafficking/slave auctions, seriously try to avoid anything heavy as a plot when those same things are happening as current events (in this case, the pipeline issue and civil unrest in Africa). Add in that the book contains my ONLY trigger, racism, and I felt sure that this was going to be a book that I not only struggled through, but also hated. So imagine my surprise when I was sucked in before chapter 1 was even complete! I was immediately drawn to the enemies-to-lovers vibe between our characters, and that the the background setting (where he's from, and where they initially met) was local to me. I listened to the audiobook, and while there was a single narrator, I thought he did a great job, and since it was written in 3rd person, it didn't bother me. The book did have a heavy plot, but there was enough snark/humor and love between Brie and Bastain, that it was manageable for me to get through. This was book 2 in the series, and while we do meet the characters from book 1, I didn't feel like I was missing anything by not reading Tinderbox first. That's not to say that I won't go back now, because this author has a way with storytelling, and I'm pretty sure that I don't want to miss out. ... show more

  • great
A fun and entertaining read. Family drama, international intrigue, mafia, Native American conflicts, military intervention…oh and that doesn’t include the romance, friendships and humor between the couple, budding couple and teams! This story is fast paced and kept me engaged from cover to cover. I loved the back and forth and surprises as the two characters and their relationship developed. The plot line was fascinating and I hope to see more of Ivan and of course Savvy and Cal! ... show more

  • Not Up To Par
I love Ms. Grant's stories. I look forward to reading them the minute I get one downloaded. Such was the case with Catalyst. Her writing was superb, her descriptions, as always, so vivid. No problems in that area at all. I devoured the words, welcomed Brie and Bastian into my fantasy friends fold and was happy. And then, little by little, my happiness faded and frustration took it's place. ******I tried to make sure my comments were spoiler-free, but they may contain indications of things some may feel are spoilers********* There was a lot of repetition in this story. It was as if Ms. Grant didn't trust that the readers would remember information. Biggest example, why Brie no longer identified herself as Gabriella Prime. Next, I felt Bastian was a bit too dismissive, too often, of Brie and her contributions to her new life. Even toward the very end of the story he quickly jumps to a conclusion that, I felt, was unheroic. Brie gave no indication of duplicity yet he constantly assumed the worse of her. Over and over again. In the beginning it's completely understandable, but after all they've been through... no. He may have internal questions/doubts, but to have voiced them as if they were a fait accompli was, in my opinion, unworthy of a hero. They were his problem yet each time, by voicing them in such accusatory manners, he made Brie have to explain/defend herself. And his only response to her incredulity was, "I'm an a**h**e." There were also a few editorial glitches that jarred me from the story. Lastly, based on everything Brie had been through, how much she had to fight, and her introspection, I believe when Bastian spoke with Savvy and Brie realized what he'd done, she was too forgiving too quickly. And Bastian's reaction to her being hurt? "Game on." Really? His inner dialogue was all over the place, but not explained by him being worried he would win back her love. Simply as a challenge. Yet not consistently. First he says "Game on," then in the following scene he talks about breaking down her wall mortar by mortar, then, immediately following that, he again stated, "Game on." What gives? The problem was, I didn't feel his remorse, didn't feel the devastation he "should" have been feeling over betraying her trust. I didn't get the sense that he needed to do anything to rebuild her trust in him. I also didn't read anything that showed his regret. Now, keep in mind, these are just my opinions. I still love Ms. Grant, and she's still on my automatic order list. I simply was disappointed in this book. ... show more

  • Edge of Your Seat Nail Biter
As with any Rachel Grant book, this book has everything a person whose love of romantic suspense could ever want -- action, romance, alpha hero, strong female, but most importantly, a well-researched story and characters so well developed and with so many layers they continue to surprise you. Ms. Grant's books always educates me in addition to the engrossing plots and sub-plots. It's evident that she takes careful time and effort into each layer of the story and I totally appreciate it. I know when I read a Rachel Grant book, I am going to get the type of story that keeps me engrossed and on the edge of my seat. I also appreciate the Author's Notes that includes the truth of the story versus the fiction. It breaks my heart as to what happens to children across the globe but bringing to light something that most of us take for granted is always an eye opener for me. (You have to read the book to find out what it is as I don't give spoilers :) As for Brie and Bastian, I love how flawed both characters were and how they readily admit it. I also love how they examine themselves and try best how to move forward individually and as a couple. The last few chapters will definitely give you whiplash! I can't wait for the next book in the series which I hope will be about Savvy. I highly recommend both books in the series. ... show more
