Description

Sunny is a girl living in a community on a farm in a seemingly apocalyptic world. The farm is electrically fenced and has strict rules that are firmly observed, and especially the rule that girls like Sunny must not enter The Shed, an imposing building inside the farm. Only grown women are allowed in, but even then, some who go in never come back. One night, the farm is raided by strangers, and some farm folk are taken. This odd incident propels a series of ominous developments in Sunny’s life. The story develops in an unexpected way, as Sunny escapes the grim destiny to which she was born. It combines suspense, loss, sadness and friendship, despair and hope. and gets quite gritty at times. The lead characters – all girls - are strong, young and brave, but not without faults. Even after you finished reading, chances are, they will stay with you. This multi-award-winning book was written as the biggest social justice movement of our time is gaining steam. It is a story for the age of revolution. Please note, the book contains a degree of violence, and infrequent, low levels of coarse language. Read more

  • Another different book
This is a different plot than what I'm used to reading. OMG! This is a shocking type of series. This also reminds me of a series called the hand maid s tale which i watched season 1. And today's atmosphere men think they can dictate women s rights to their own bodies. I would recommend this series to anyone. Thank you for writing. On to the next book in the series. ... show more

  • Fascinating story
This is a great novel with a fascinating story line. Fast paced, makes you think a lot about what we do and how we do it. I can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy!

  • Organic Dairy Farms???
This was an unexpected journey regarding an organic farm. I didn’t see this coming. Of course it reminded me of Tender is the Flesh. It was a quick read and I’m now invested in Sunny and Spirit. So I will be reading the next Book.

  • A True Page Turner
I finished all three books in the Liberation Trilogy in one weekend. They were absorbing, brilliantly written and make the reader think about what we do to animals in a whole different light. I highly recommend this trilogy to everyone who dreams of a peaceful, sane world.

  • Cleverly written & enjoyable read
Highly recommend to both young adults & mature audiences. This story conveys a very important message, it is a dystopian world that is all too familiar with our own.

  • I couldn't put it down.
Beautifully written and quietly haunting, Ronen handles a disturbing topic with confidence and a light touch in her thought-provoking first novel. Set in a dark, dystopian future that turns Orwell’s Animal Farm on its head, the story moves easily between past and present, the pieces coming together to expose a universally-sanctioned atrocity made all the more grotesque by the truth that hides behind it: do we really want to know what lies inside the shed? The reader is drawn into Sunny’s world with a kind of horrified fascination as we share her psychological and literal journey from naïve farm girl to vanguard of the revolution, simultaneously mesmerised and repelled by the overt dehumanization of a world in which individual identity is supressed and families no longer exist - depending on which side of the fence you sit. Sunny’s entry into the shed is a catalyst for personal growth, not only hers but also the reader’s. The shed is more than the answer to Sunny’s questions, it is a metaphor for our own cognitive dissonance, the truths that we know without knowing, as we turn our faces from realities that don’t sit well. With a clear appeal to young adults as well as more mature readers, this book challenges and inspires as surely as it unsettles. This is a coming of age story that speaks to more than the emotional growth of its protagonists, but also to the entrenched attitudes of a society that refuses to let go of its past. Ronen’s characters are enduring and believable, and their challenges, tragedies and victories hit the reader hard, keeping us engaged as the plot moves from the farm’s darkest secret out into the wider world. A fast-paced page turner from page one, this is one book I couldn’t put it down. You will love it. ... show more
