Description

“A gripping novel about power, money, and secrets.” ―Mindy KalingA daughter’s investigation into her family history threatens to destroy their legacy in a gripping novel about power, money, and secrets by the author of Token Black Girl.On their Martha’s Vineyard estate, the Carter family prepares to celebrate. But when the billionaire patriarch dies right before his seventieth birthday, the media is quick to question the future of the multi-industry conglomerate that makes the Carters living legends. Amid the succession crisis, his daughter, Kennedy, is questioning her father’s past.Kennedy is an aspiring filmmaker, and the documentary she’d planned to present at her father’s party begins an inquest into the life of a man she never really knew. A thoughtful outlier in an elite and fiercely guarded dynasty, she’s not interested in keeping up the appearances that define her impeccably poised mother or in the capitalist games her ruthless brother plays. Kennedy wants only to understand the origins of their empire, and the lethally ambitious man behind it. That understanding comes at a cost.As a twisted history emerges, the fault lines in the family grow. Torn between morality and the promise of maintaining wealth, Kennedy must decide what’s most important―the Carter legacy or exposing the shocking truth of how it was built. Read more

  • Enjoyable and satisfying
I enjoyed the character development, stark look at family life for the ultra-wealthy as well as the outside friend view as it relates to Kennedy. The story build is very well done with timeline switching from past to present. I would like to see more as it relates to Jacqueline and Kennedy, their dynamic was building which left me feeling like there could be another avenue to explore there. But a good author always leaves me wanting more! ... show more

  • Interested Read Invoking Complex Emotions
The premise of the story began with me immediately thinking of “Our Kind of People”. I was prepared to say I knew what was going to happen (and in a way, you can see where things are going) but the world and background building coupled with the characters being distinctly different made for a great read. Some Characters are more irritating than others, but each plays an important part in the reviewing of a patriarch’s life while living out their own. It was realistic and interesting and encourages me to read Prescod’s other work! ... show more

  • Good idea but dull execution
The Rules of Fortune has an interesting premise around the accumulation of wealth and its social and personal impacts, against our modern racial history in the U.S. Sadly, the writing does not serve the story well. The characters are one dimensional, owing to the heavy exposition. The characters' thoughts and motivations are explicitly spelled out by the omniscient narrator. They rarely reveal themselves through dialogue or actions. Show instead of tell! Let the reader deduce a thing or two. Otherwise it is like reading a report or sociology case study rather than a realistic reflection of life. The author has talent and I hope she will take this as constructive criticism. ... show more

  • Money and Secrets
A quick good read. Good character build out of details that keep you reading. Some things were too predictable but still an enjoyable book with interesting fictional imagery into what it might be like to be in a family with unbelievable wealth and what it took to get there.

  • Enjoyed Reading Cover to Cover
This is my first book by the author, and surely won’t be my last. I felt the characters were developed and I could see the characters come to life. I loved the history and the vantage point of William Jr. trying to not just navigate but master existing in predominantly white spaces in college and business. She also delves into what motivates really determined successful people and the sacrifices they make to achieve greatness. ... show more

  • fair read
First time read of this author. It’s rather a slow moving story but interesting. Seems a bite far fetched but then maybe it could happen the way the story reads

  • Great storyline!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Although the ending fell a bit flat, I didn’t dislike it but it just left me unresolved? Like the author just needed to complete the book quickly.

  • Great book
The storyline was interesting and believable. I enjoyed the characters. The writing was first class. Their lives and their corporations were believable but so typical of some who are rich and famous.
