I have several North Face jackets and love them all. The quality of their coats are the best. I wear size small but this particular jacket was a little too big. I ordered another one in X small and it fits perfectly so I returned the size small.

TL;DR: Lightweight, very warm, and exceptionally versatile: fits true to size, packs down small, and works perfectly as either an outer layer or a layering piece. A true three-season jacket. Review: This jacket is lightweight, comfortable, and very warm. When I ordered it, I was briefly confused by the listing photos since it looked like there was an inner turtleneck-style collar sitting close to the model’s neck. As it turns out, that’s just a separate layer the model is wearing. That’s a relief, since I ordered the white color and was worried about makeup transferring onto the jacket. That won’t be an issue at all. I typically wear a medium, and this fits true to size. I have broader shoulders, which sometimes means sleeves run short, but the sleeves on this jacket are long enough and land exactly where they should at the wrist. Stitching is clean, seams line up perfectly, and the overall construction shows care and attention to detail. The insulation is divided into discrete pockets, which keeps the jacket compact and makes it excellent for packing. It can be rolled and compressed down very small, ideal for fall camping or travel. The hoodie is fitted enough to be flattering, but still roomy enough to layer technical clothing underneath, giving this real flexibility as a warm outer layer. It’s light enough that it could also be worn under a parka for extreme cold. What stands out most is the balance of function and versatility. Nice looking coat, love the deep inner pocket for protecting my phone and the deep zippered outer pockets as well. Also love the cinch cords at the bottom for blocking wind and weather, and the cinch cord at the hood; both also hold in heat and so add comfort. The sleeves are long and have elastic cinch at the wrist which is excellent. This coat has well thought-out details. It's also water repellant and wind resistant, both are needed and appreciated. It can be machine washed and packs well, taking up minimum suitcase space; having travelled a lot I really appreciate that, it's great travel coat. It runs a bit big so it's also great for layering which is good, because it is lighter weight, great for a blustering fall or chilly spring but in winter it will definitely require layering. We had our first snow here in Wisconsin a few days ago, it was cold but not crazy cold (high twenties, low thirties) and this coat was not enough by itself. I understand it has Thermoball Eco insulation but it was not enough with the wind. So in the winter I will use it more like an outer shell on top of layers, which is great if I'm already wearing a heavy sweater or layered with a thermal top (which I often am ;). The North Face has built a name and reputation, and even a sort of status, for great coats, and this is a good one, I really love the white. But as said it won't be all I need to make it through our Wisconsin winter. ... show more

I’m quite pleased with this jacket - it’s lightweight and super packable, which makes it ideal for everyday wear or layering around the PNW. There are several thoughtful features such as the hood, which can be tightened to help block wind or drizzle. The lined pockets with zippers are roomy and practical for carrying essentials, which I appreciate when I’m out running errands or hiking local trails. The inner pocket is especially great. While I wouldn’t count on it to keep you warm through a Michigan-style winter, the insulation and fit seem absolutely right for errands, chilly fall or spring days, or travel. I also really love the white color - it looks fresh and sophisticated without seeming too flashy. For the price, the quality feels worth it. Finally, I applaud the brand’s commitment to sustainability. Although I typically avoid this type of jacket due to the microplastic pollution of production, what sold me was the circular design initiative: when I’m done with the jacket, being able to send it back to be turned into another jacket gives me a lot of confidence in the long-term value and ethics behind the purchase. ... show more

    • Face the music: Its going to be cold

Our family will be moving back to Wisconsin from Texas in a few months, and the kids are going to need a whole new outdoor wardrobe (providing they go outside the first winter). I ordered this for my daughter and it will be given as a Christmas present, so the review is based on what my wife says about it after a short trip outside with weather in the 40's. She pulled it out of the bag and the first comment was that it feels light but still built for real winter. We have purchased North Face products before, but this definitely seemed lighter than the ones we had back in the early 2000's. The quilting looks clean. The shape is simple. The hood lines up well around the face and the whole thing packs down without crinkling or bunching up. She also liked the color choices enough that she considered taking it for herself, which is usually a good sign. The zippers run smoothly. The finish looks tidy. No stray threads or odd seams. Overall, it feels like the right kind of coat for a kid who will be discovering what single-digit temperatures actually feel like. ... show more
